I had an extremely disappointing experience with Joy Machines Bike Shop, and feel it's important to share my frustrations so potential customers don’t make the same mistake I did. I paid $178.20 for e-bike servicing, which included a $115 tune-up, a $50 rear tire replacement, and $13.20 in tax. Unfortunately, the service was far below expectations, and the way my concerns were handled was beyond unprofessional.
To start, the bike tune-up itself was poorly executed. I had specifically paid for a thorough cleaning, chain lubrication, a safety inspection, and adjustments to the brakes, gears, and bearings. When I received my bike back, it was in worse shape than when I dropped it off. The frame was coated in excess oil, leaving a greasy residue that was not only unprofessional but made my bike look poorly maintained. It was clear that the cleaning had either been skipped or done improperly. For a $115 tune-up, I expected far better.
The rear tire replacement also left much to be desired. I called ahead and asked if the new rear tire would look noticeably different from the front tire. The shop assured me it wouldn't, so I proceeded with the replacement. However, when I received the bike, I immediately noticed that the new rear tire had reflective tape on the sidewall, which the front tire did not have. Anyone with basic common sense could see that this created a visual mismatch, and the difference was glaring. It contradicted the shop's earlier assurance that the tires would be similar in appearance. Had I known about this, I would have ordered a matching tire for the front to avoid this issue.
When I called Alex, the owner, to discuss my concerns, I was met with a dismissive and condescending attitude. He claimed that the product used to clean my bike (a Finish Line towel) had been around for a long time and that he had never received complaints about it, implying that my feedback was irrelevant. His response wasn’t just unhelpful; it was blatantly disrespectful. Worse, there was zero offer to resolve the issues. He didn’t take responsibility for the poor workmanship or the misrepresentation of the tire appearance. Instead, he seemed more interested in defending the shop’s practices than actually addressing my concerns. As a paying customer, this kind of treatment was unacceptable.
It’s people like Alex who make it incredibly difficult to trust bike shops. When you're spending your hard-earned money, you expect honesty, professionalism, and respect. Unfortunately, my experience with Alex left me feeling dismissed and taken advantage of. A simple apology or an offer to make things right would have gone a long way, but that was completely absent. This lack of accountability and respect creates a toxic atmosphere, and it completely destroyed any trust I might have had in the business.
Overall, I did not receive the service I paid for, and my concerns were met with indifference and arrogance. I would not recommend Joy Machines Bike Shop to anyone looking for reliable bike maintenance or decent customer service. If you’re looking for quality work and professional customer care, I strongly suggest taking your...
Read moreI stopped into this shop during my commute from E.55th to W.117th.my crank arm had come lose & I needed a Allen wrench to tighten it.I was greeted by 3 mechanics that seemed annoyed with my presence.when I asked if they had a park tool or wrench I could use quickly (I was on my way to work)one of them announced to me that they are not in the habit of lending tools, but they could do it for me to the tune of $5.I had no other option to agree as I was running late.I legitimately had to pay this guy $5 for 4 turns of a wrench, less than 2 minutes of work I could have done myself!!this fellow saw that I had no other option & most definitely took advantage of the situation to turn a quick buck.(I had exactly $5 luckily)he also took this as an opportunity to speak to me as if I was unintelligent.I was so angered by this experience I looked them up online only to discover this rude person was actually THE OWNER!?!?!?I don't know if Alex treats everyone like this?perhaps he feels threatened by cyclists who know what's wrong w/their bikes?I don't really care... you shouldn't treat fellow cyclists like that, especially commuters!avoid this place like the plague if you can,if I could leave zero stars I...
Read moreWe couldn’t ask for a better sales experience than we had at Joy Machines. My husband and I were in search for two bikes for casual riding, and Antwon really hooked us up. He was kind from the very beginning and he seemed to really read what we were into and what we weren’t, which we really appreciated. He was knowledgeable about their stock, and even showed us a bike that hadn’t yet been refurbished because it was perfect for my tall husband. We ended up selecting that bike along with another refurbished bike, tail lights, helmets, a rack, a very nice bike bag, and a bike lock. The Joy Machines crew had my husband’s bike ready to go by the very next day.
We took the bikes on our honeymoon and road 40 miles without any issues. We will definitely be back for all of our future...
