PLEASE READ my detailed honest review. I will start with, I am a loyal Hilton honors member and I always select a hotel from the Hilton chain when available. I went with the Hilton Modern for a few reasons. I knew the hotel was older based on other reviews. I care more about a clean room than some of the amenities that this hotel lack. I'll list based on pros and cons: Pros: Location Location Location. Easy to access and a short walk to the beach. If you have mobility issues, there is a sidewalk all the way to the ocean/beach and it leads around to other hotel locations next door. It's okay to visit the other hotels, none of them can stop you from entering the beach connected to the hotel based on law. Con: The Modern, doesn't have as many food options and shops in it as all the other hotels within walking distance. The Ilikia is right next door and they have a fabulous coffee shop. Just don't order the Truffle waffel (Yuck). But the coffee is great along with other breakfast on the go options. Pro: There is a steak house across the street on the corner from the hotel. It's so close, that even if you have a car, it makes no sense to get in the car; leave it parked in the Modern hotel garage. Another pro: The parking garage is very convenient. I did rent a car against everyone's advice due to the cost and parking cost. Here's a tip. Sign up for hilton honnors program. It's free. That way you get 3 more dollars per day off the $35 per day cost to park your car. While that may be a con for some, The Modern is actually the cheaper of all the others who charge $40-$55 per night. It was worth for me when visiting other parts of the island like the north shore. Here's a con for the room: Why in the heck did they design this room with 12-18 in wide wood shutters on each side of the bathroom mirror that go all the way from the counter to the ceiling. Let me be clear, their are two openings in the wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. Why is this a big deal...even with the shutters closed (AND WHY WOULD THEY EVER BE OPEN)...you have to mask the sound of farts and running liquids of all kinds while sharing the space. Just weird. I've stayed in hiltons all over the country and I've never seen anything like it. You can see this in the images on their website and I'll try to upload it. The beds were platform beds. So if you have trouble getting up from low profile sofas or beds, get ready for the double room low profile with no balcony. Balconies are for king rooms only I was told. When it says "partial view of the ocean" believe them. It's just partial, while you're standing in the window peeping out for a few secs. It's not like you'll stand or sit their glaring for long. So save yourself the extra few bucks if you can. Pro: The views are amazing from the shared pool patio decks and any rooms that have a view. You'll be wowed by the many boats in the marina with a backdrop of the most amazing sunset! Pro: This hotel was on the lower cost end. Con: It's REALLY dark in the hallway when exiting the elevator. Pro: There is a ton of parking available in the garage (at least it was during my week there in the last week of January 24). Easy to get in and out. Pro: The hotel is in walking distance of lots of fun hotels that cost a lot more. Why pay to stay there, when you can just walk over daily. Pro: The most beautiful indoor/outdoor shopping mall is on the same street less than 5 minutes away. Which is great if it's a rainy day and you can't go to the beach. The mall has every high end designer store and moderate and Low budget like a Marshalls and Ross attached to it. Imagine Fendi to Ross...unheard of. There are 2 large food courts with fabulous options including Hawaiian and Asian selections. Pro: The staff was friendly and helpful. You get two bottles per room free per day with a coupon voucher. Overall, I would stay there again based on location and cost. Not because it's a "modern" building. The shutters in the bathroom, have me confused still. Also, all pictures on their site around the property is exactly how it looks.

I recently stayed at The Modern Honolulu by Hilton from August 29 to September 5, and overall, I was quite disappointed with the amenities and the overall experience. To start, the "adults-only" pool is extremely misleading. It’s not much more than a splash pad—a couple of inches deep at best. Moreover, there is no functioning bar there, so if you’re hoping to relax with a drink in hand, you’ll need to go downstairs to the main pool. Another inconvenience was the closure of the restrooms on the second floor. Guests were forced to go downstairs to use the washroom at the main pool, which is an unnecessary hassle. While I was aware that the resort wasn’t directly on the beach, I was disappointed to find that they don’t offer any provisions for beach services—no lounge chairs, umbrellas, or any other amenities for guests. It seems like such a basic service for a resort, especially one with Hilton’s reputation. A major letdown was the poolside dining policy. My partner and I brought a bottle of champagne to enjoy by the pool, but were told we couldn’t drink it there. Only food and beverages purchased from their Grove Restaurant and Bar were allowed. While I understand the need for the resort to generate revenue, this policy felt extreme and off-putting, especially at a leisure-focused property. The room itself also had multiple issues. The mini fridge door was broken and needed repair, and the room safe malfunctioned, locking us out. After a technician opened it, we weren’t able to use it for the rest of our stay. The bathroom was another point of concern—there were wooden windows that didn’t fully close, and the sliding door lacked a lock, offering very little privacy. On the positive side, the bed and mattress were comfortable, which did provide a good night’s rest despite the other inconveniences. In terms of amenities, the gym and fitness centre left much to be desired. It’s incredibly small, with only one bench, making it difficult to get a proper workout in, especially in the mornings when several people were using it at the same time. The main pool did offer some happy hour snacks, and while the burger was a smaller version of their regular offering, I must say it was quite tasty—probably one of the few highlights of the stay. The final straw was their refusal to grant a reasonable late checkout, despite our 7-night stay and a much later flight back to Toronto. After a week at the hotel, the inflexibility was disappointing and left a sour note to the end of our stay. Overall, I would not recommend staying here. The amenities fall far short of expectations, especially for a resort of this calibre, and there are far better options available closer to the beach and city attractions. I won’t be returning to The Modern Honolulu.

This was probably one of my worst Hilton experiences in a long time. We normally stay at Homewood Suites so staying in a normal hotel room is already a downgrade for us. Tiny platform beds were almost laughable. They weren't even Queens. They were very low to the ground, they had spring mattresses on a platform which makes the bed feel very hard. My back ached the entire nine days over there. The opening between the bathroom and the bedroom felt strange and not private, I was staying at the hotel with my brother and son, and I felt like I lacked privacy in the restroom. My safe stopped working, and security had to come fix it, when we first got there the refrigerator was not cold enough to keep my medication cold, so we had to turn that down as low as possible and I still had to put it on ice every day to keep it cool. The rooms did not have any drawers whatsoever so that I could unpack my suitcase and the entire week I had to lug my suitcase in and out just to get clothing, swimsuits or whatever I needed. There was a lot of street noise coming in our window, anytime cars would honk or go by the sound came right into our room. We did love the lanai, and we got to play games out there each night with a nice breeze. However the restaurant downstairs and the bar were quite expensive and we ended up not eating or drinking much while there. Parking was easy, although expensive compared to normal Hilton prices. We did enjoy the water filling stations, and I used them almost daily. The staff were incredibly friendly and we could tell they were all very hard working, however upon check out one of the other guests put our room number down with their name, and we ended up being delayed at checkout while trying to get to our flight because there was a $156 additional charge that was not ours. We never charge anything to the room for this reason, however it was quite a predicament to try and prove that it wasn't us. We weren't even at the hotel that day, we were on a 10-hour tour around the island. And the names didn't match the room number. They removed the charge tentatively they said until an investigation could be done. We did enjoy the lei making class, and ice cream nearby. We also did have breakfast at the Pesca restaurant next door which had absolutely beautiful views.

I’ve never been to this Resort. I am always open to stay at new places. I’m glad we stayed here. We booked two rooms one had a partial ocean view and the other had the city view (both beautiful views if you ask me). They have a parking garage and one they call overflow parking. I don’t think there was much difference. I’m very happy that the parking fee wasn’t overly priced compared to other hotels and resorts around. It’s near a mall, restaurants, shops, and other hotels. If you don’t plan to explore the island I’d say this is the perfect spot! The resort is beautiful! I was totally amazed with the view especially when you are at the sunset pool. I love that they have that upper deck for adults only (you can have a bit of quite time up there w/out kids). There is also a gym and a spa. There is a water bottle filler also. The rooms are set up nicely. The beds are low though kind of like Japanese style because is lower than usual. (Check out the pics). Another great thing about this resort is the restaurant/bar. The food was delicious we ended up eating here a few times. It is not on the beach, however it is on the waterfront with boats docks which creates a beautiful view. The beach is less than a quarter of a mile walk. There is a pathway that leads to the beach. We went walking every night, the weather was perfect. Last but not least, the hotel and restaurant staff Very helpful, friendly, and welcoming. The lobby does not have a luxury look but don’t judge until you see the inside. Oh one more thing, I would have given a 5 star rating except that the lobby was not ADA accessible. There’s no ramp at the front so if you have a lot of luggage go straight to the garage for elevator access. If you have a wheelchair no access from the front to the lobby. But, I/We totally enjoyed our stay here! I wouldn’t mind staying here again!

While close to the beach, there is a McDonald's across the road and Ala Moana is within walking distance. As other reviews have said, there seemed to be no Japanese speaking staff and I did not see any Japanese guests, so I think this is a good choice for those who want to enjoy the local atmosphere while in Waikiki. (However, the signage was in both English and Japanese.) The staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful, although I was a little nervous when I was waiting in line because they were very American. The check-in process was even better, as I was able to complete important details such as room descriptions and resort fees one at a time using English text on the machine, which is something Japanese people are relatively good at reading. My only concern is that I didn't have much cash on hand and couldn't give much of a tip. The rooms were relatively clean. The showers had the same amount of water as in Japan. However, there was no heating and the room was extremely cold. I was also surprised that it costs 400 yen to buy water in town, but this hotel has a water server, and I was grateful that I could drink as much water as I wanted for free. Checking out also took only a moment to hand over the key. Since we were flying in early in the morning and didn't have much time to spend, we were stingy and chose this hotel, which cost less than 30,000 yen. Beginners should definitely stay at the Hilton, but if you want to feel the American atmosphere, this is a good choice. There was a demonstration at the pool on the hotel grounds at 7:00 in the morning, and the noise was so loud that it must have woken up all the guests in the guest rooms. I guess that's part of the American experience.

I am not sure why people complain. I am big on where I lay my head and keep my stuff while traveling. I gave it a five star based on my experience due to people complaining. Yes there was no housekeeping but soon as I asked for fresh towels and sheets it was sent to my room. The hotel was clean. The room was spacious. Check-in was simple. No issue with WI fi. No issue with bathroom No issue with the room. Their hang-out spot on the second floor is cute and cozy
