My son loves crawling away on The Oval, an almost football sized oval shape fake grass area that kids can play in and grown ups can sit on a la picnic style, under the sun. It's like a mini version of the central park main lawn that you see in so many pictures- but nicer because almond the edges of the oval are pathways and benches that DO have trees for shade. You can hang around IN the oval, or sit of the benches watching your kids play.
Or you can sit under the trees next to and behind the benches, where the grass is real and the air feels cooler.
The amazing thing about this oval is that behind those benches and trees, there are carefully landscape little hidden paths beautifully landscaped with bushes and MANY, MANY flower bushes.
In the spring, these paths were lined with beautiful roses among other flowers and I retesting looking plants.
Now that the summer heat has withered the roses away, you can find more resilient flowers like daisies, by the bunches, planted all over.
You can tell a lot of thought, planning, collaboration and expertise was put into the planning of this area.
This area around the oval is then attached to pathways that lead to a sprinkler park for children like no other; with so many types of sprinklers and water works that my toddler was watching the water works and kids play for an hour.
A beautiful carousel is right across the gate to the sprinkler park and playground (the sprinkler area is within the kids playground).
If you walk a bit further, past the playground, in 3-5 mins you'll be at the little sand beach overlooking the boardwalk and the water.
Best planned park ive ever been to; so much to do in such...
Read moreBefore the pandemic I would have given a better review, as it is a charming, peaceful little retreat, if a bit sterile, with lovely horticulture and better birding than might be expected. When the pandemic first hit, the park rightfully put in place a rule for visitors to wear masks. A fair share of outrageously remiss visitors would not comply with this crucial CDC protocol but at least the park staff aptly enforced the rule to the unmasked. No more. Today I visited the park hoping for a bit of solace and saw several visitors lounging on the lawn and not wearing masks, as if life were just fine - a pandemic, what's that? I told a park security guard about this and the guard, while in agreement with my viewpoint, said they were told by "the big boss" that many visitors complained about park staff being "mask police" and "harassing" them to wear masks, so now the staff cannot tell visitors to mask up. They told me if I did not like this precedent, then I should leave the park. What an obscenely incompetent and cowardly answer that was. It is an outright abomination that in a time when 180,000 people in the US have died from COVID-19, Newport Green Park Management is caving in to criminally selfish and ignorant people who are cry-babying and bellyaching (poor things, this is the smallest violin and it's playing just for you!) that being told to wear a mask and thus preserve human life is an act of harassment and asking a grand sacrifice of them. How morally bankrupt the park management is to take this stance during a...

I absolutely love this little beach at Newport Green Park, it’s one of those rare peaceful spots that makes you forget you’re in the middle of the city. The soft sand, colorful chairs, and the view of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson make it feel like a mini escape without leaving town.
It’s perfect for relaxing with a book, watching the sunset, or just dipping your toes in the sand while the breeze hits your face. The park is super family-friendly, with a spacious and safe playground, a splash pad for hot days, and even a carousel that kids absolutely love! It’s the kind of place where you can just come and let your little ones play freely.
It’s also perfectly accessible, with smooth paths and ramps for strollers and wheelchairs. And getting here is super easy, the park is located right between the Hoboken and Newport PATH stations. You’re also surrounded by great coffee shops, restaurants, and supermarkets, which makes it a perfect spot to grab a snack or plan a spontaneous picnic by the water.
Everything is clean, well-maintained, and it always feels safe. Whether you’re a local or just visiting Jersey City, this peaceful urban beach is a must. It’s such a vibe, especially on...
