We loved the view from the roof when we'd BBQ, the attentive maintenance and cleaning staff, and how close it was to the beach. The dishwasher was also one of the best we've had in any apartment since moving to SoCal.
Ultimately, we decided to vacate, even though the rent increase was only $50. There were just too many issues at this price point that we couldn’t overlook.
For four months, we dealt with people above us throwing cigarette butts onto our terrace, which my dog would often get to before I could. While we were compensated $400 for the inconvenience, over the course of four months and ~$15k in rent, we felt more could have been done to find the people responsible. The office offered us a deal on a two-bedroom, but by then, our feelings about the building had soured, and we didn’t want to be locked into another 12-month lease. We declined.
The other appliances were dated, including the HVAC controls, making the unit feel low quality for a "luxury" claim. The doors drooped, bathroom had poor airflow, making the bedroom very humid. The kitchen sink leaked from day one, requiring multiple work orders, and we later discovered it had detached from the counter, causing the leaks. The hot/cold water knob was so close to the backsplash it scraped the wall when adjusting the temperature.
The terrace gates were deteriorating. We put in work orders, and they were fulfilled promptly, but it became a recurring problem with the gates not latching properly. This was an issue since we had a small dog, and the neighbors had larger dogs. Some of their dogs managed to jump over/run through the gates, which weren’t strong enough due to their condition.
The bamboo planters remained a persistent problem throughout the duration of the lease. The bamboo was DOA on move-in and water runoff soaked our terrace. The office said they were looking for a vendor with "a better rate." After a couple of months, they found a vendor but 5 out of 12 new plants were DOA and still planted... 1 more later died and the problem continued with the planters leaking and retaining excessive water, contributing to a mosquito problem but thankfully not worsening the cigarette butt issue.
Whenever fixing the planters, tons of dirt would occupy our terrace, blocking us in for 3-5 days at a time. The units are already extremely dark during the day, and the poor airflow made it a poor environment, especially for someone working from home.
The "den" Is really just a small closet with no ventilation or outlets. It can fit a 4-foot desk and a chair, but you have to push the chair in to open the door. In the summer, you must keep the door open with a fan nearby since there’s no airflow. There's a gap under the door where you can run a cord from the hall outlet to the inside of the closet/den, though.
Without window treatments, there’s no privacy from Shoreline apartments since it eclipse courtyard units. There’s a direct line of sight from the bathroom and bedroom to Shoreline apartments, which has a wall of windows.
When we informed the office we weren’t renewing, they did a complete 180. In our notice to vacate, I mentioned that workers fixing the planters that save day had blown gas fumes and debris into our unit while I was working from home. There was no notice they'd be there. The office didn’t address the issue and immediately provided exit details, including fees for using the garbage area for items we hadn’t recently been charged for (e.g., cushions and lamps - $50 each), items frequently discarded by other residents.
On move-out day, the elevator wasn’t available at the scheduled time, cutting into 30 minutes of our use. When time was up, the office staff however, promptly revoked access, leaving us with one load(~10min) to finish.
It took 2 months for them to return our deposit, despite California law giving them 21 calendar days with caveats that didn't apply here. The itemized statement was backdated and signed by them to appear as if we received it before the 21st day, while the actual deposit was delayed...

Obviously as part of living in any big city across the US, there will always be certain circumstances that are out of one’s control, such as street parking, homelessness among other harsh realities of living in highly populated urbar areas but as far as what can be controlled/managed in order to ensure the maximum satisfaction of residents/guests alike, The Current has by far surpassed those qualities & continues to do so each & every single day which needless to say it is truly appreciated by me, my loved ones and everyone who resides at 707 East Ocean Blvd!
