Disappointed by Unclear Policy, Rude Service and Discrimination – Longtime Customers Treated Poorly
My family and I have been shopping at Ross—especially this location—for years, and have always appreciated the great deals and senior discount. But today’s experience was deeply disappointing.
My parents, my 85-year-old grandmother, and I went to check out with several items. Even though it’s obvious my grandmother is over 55, the cashier insisted on seeing ID—which is understandable. I handed over her ID without any issue.
The problem began when we tried to pay using Apple Pay. The cashier told us the credit card name must match the senior’s ID, and refused to let us pay for my grandmother’s items,“the senior has to pay.” This was totally new to us—we’ve always paid for her before with no issues. I politely explained that my grandmother doesn’t have her credit card with her, and we would like to pay on her behalf. Still, the cashier declined to help.
When I asked if this was a new rule, she replied with attitude that “it has always been like this,” and told me I could talk to the manager if I wanted.
Wanting clarification, I politely asked to speak with the manager. It was clear she had already been briefed by the cashier, as she repeated the same rule: “The senior has to pay. It’s always been like this.” When I explained that we’ve never had this issue in all our years of shopping here, she insisted again that it’s the long-standing policy—just that some cashiers follow it and some don’t. That explanation only made things more confusing. I can’t help but wonder how none of the cashiers we’ve encountered over the years ever followed this supposed rule. Then I asked her what If someone wants to pay for their grandma, she said: “then no discount”!
I later checked Ross’s official website. The only listed requirements for the senior discount are that the customer be 55+ and present at checkout with ID if requested to receive the 10% discount on Tuesdays( you can see screenshot from official website) .There is no rule stating the senior must personally pay.
What made the experience worse was the cashier’s attitude—she could have explained her reasoning kindly, but instead chose to be dismissive and cold. It felt unnecessary and unprofessional.
We’re loyal Ross customers, and this experience felt both confusing and hurtful. If there is truly a new policy requiring the senior to pay themselves, Ross should clearly update their website. Otherwise, it seems like this rule was made up at the register and enforced without compassion or consistency.
To be completely honest, the way we were treated—combined with the dismissive attitude and inconsistency—came across as discriminatory, and possibly even racially motivated. We left the store feeling not only frustrated but also disrespected. No customer should ever walk away...
Read moreWarning for Disabled, Elderly, pregnant and otherwise limited mobility persons: you need to bring someone with you because this location will not assist you all. They do not care. The baskets can't leave the store and after spending money there they ask you to leave your stuff with the 1 security guard while you walk back and forth to get all to your car, while a thief watches you walking back and forth. If your not disbabled, its easier, you have both arms. If you have to walk with a cane, and a purse, you only have 1 arm/hand available. If your like me your spinal injuries make this difficult to impossible. They offer zero assistance. What if you have a stroller and children? Your expected to to the same..elderly? No change.
If you question an electronic item on the table thrown with other stuff and you want to make sure it works, the manager lies and states there are no outlets.
Really? How do the cleaning people wax and clean the floors? Supposedly not even the manager, let alone employees charge their phones even on break? They dont have microwaves for the employees either?
If it's policy to not test anything they sell why not just say that instead of lying. Yes i called him a liar.
Yes prices are great. Just don't go alone if your buying more than just a few small items and don't expect them to want to deliver good customer service even if all your asking is to veryify something turns on. The cashiers don't look very happy to be there. Generally that's indicative of management. Ive been to other locations where they actually care. This is larger. The only plus side to...
