This place was a surprise. It looked small so I expected a quick visit. After leaving hours later we all want another visit to spend more time. We've gone to several living history sites many times. This is a new favorite.
I'll get the negative out of the way first. For a summer Saturday I would have expected more people in character around the places. Also, despite the wardrobe and knowledge they didn't stay in character much. When asked about the birch canoe a trader was with, he explained it was just a fiberglass canoe painted to look the part. Of course we knew that, so that took away a little of the immersion. These are really my only negatives.
On the good side, the faithfulness of reconstruction was very good. I also like the feel of being in the fort during its time (relatively fresh construction) rather than being in a place that's now 250 years old, degraded, repaired many times, etc. This place gives a real feel for what the people of the time would have seen and smelled it as. The people we did encounter had great knowledge of the place, activities, and history. Seeing artifacts found alongside a reconstruction also gave a good context the kids could understand well enough to get excited.
All in all, a fantastic place we'll certainly visit again. My negatives hardly add up to a whole star off, but I couldn't give a partial star. I'd easily give 4.8/5. Pictures don't do this place justice, seeing it in person exceeds...

Read moreIf you enjoy history this is an excellent attraction. Located just prior to the Machinac Bridge. You enter at the gift shop and walk down to the fort. Best to start this tour by watching a 20 minute video that does a great job explaining the history of the fort and the time period. There are employees dressed in era period clothing and very well versed in the forts history and life during that time period. You are provided a map with 22 sites of interest offering exhibits, videos and written information that does an excellent job explaining the history, life inside and challenges of that time period. There are 7 different demonstrations throughout the day that are worth attending. Plenty of parking (free) and clean restrooms located at the entrance and inside the fort. You can enter and exit as long as you keep your ticket for that day. Definitely worth the admission price $16 for adults. Be prepared to walk (wear comfortable shoes) and take plenty of photos. You can get some good pictures of the bridge from the fort. Highly recommend if your a history buff or just want to know more about colonial period history. There is a NO smoking policy, please be respectful of this. Several people on the day we visited didn't adhere to...
