Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse Visiting the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse feels like stepping back into Michigan’s nautical history. The moment you arrive, the beautifully preserved red-brick structure and its classic tower signal the importance this beacon held for generations of Great Lakes mariners. Exhibits inside are thoughtfully curated, showcasing period artifacts, interactive displays, and the fascinating story of shipping and shipwrecks along the treacherous straits.
During my visit, the highlight was the lighthouse attendant, whose passion for history elevated the experience. His thorough explanations covered everything from the engineering of the Fresnel lens to day-in-the-life recollections of past keepers and their families. He answered questions with patience and depth, weaving in local anecdotes and shipwreck tales that made the tour engaging for all ages.
The grounds themselves are immaculate and offer panoramic views of the Mackinac Bridge and Lake Huron—perfect for photography. The restored keeper’s quarters and fog signal building add extra layers of interest for history buffs. Whether you’re a lighthouse enthusiast or exploring Mackinaw City for the first time, this site delivers on educational value, authenticity, and...
Read moreWe visited Mackinaw City on a warm mid September's day and were surprised at the number of tourists visiting the area. I can't imagine what summer must be like. The city is very compact and easily walk-able and we wandered about, stumbling upon this great lighthouse museum. There are four or five small buildings that your ticket will allow you into and you also get to climb up into the lighthouse. Be aware, no flip flops or loose shoes. You will climb 50 steps on a spiral staircase and then need to climb a short ladder to gain entrance into the top part of the tower. The views are great, although you are packed in and there is little room to move. Remember when you climb, always keep three points of contact, and you can't fall. You will be with a guide, who will give you some history about the light and you don't have much time in the tower, maybe 10 to 15 minutes, so enjoy it. The shipwreck museum is a treat, as the models are simply fantastic with their detail. You will see the ship pre and post sinking. And always, the view...
Read moreThe lighthouse was fine to see from the outside but wasn't particularly interesting to see the inside. It definitely was not worth the price of admission to go in. There was nothing of any historical significance here except some unimpressive artifacts from a few shipwrecks. My wife was unable to climb the lighthouse tower (she had flip-flops on), buy we were given the hard sell by the cashier to pay the admission to go in, which I did for the kid's sake. We waited an hour for the tour only to be told that my son was 4 inches too short to go up. I left with a light wallet and, worst of all, a very disappointed child. The cashier never bothered to mention the height policy despite the fact that we were obviously there for the kids. Not only did I spend what little money I had, but I spent a good chunk of what little time I had available that day on this attraction. Enjoy the park and take pictures of the outside, but I'd recommend you save your money for...
