Out of the 3 wings of the hotel, one has the original 3 story walk up that smells like mold, as does the lobby. They cover it up by constantly spraying pikake. It's next to the Sheraton, so any rooms on that North side have a beautiful view of Black Rock, but be warned, the Sheraton has an extremely loud luau for 5 hours from 3pm-8pm every day. Or, they will have events running from 3pm-10pm, making it impossible to rest even with earplugs, after a day exploring. In the winter months, there is no natural light and the rooms from the 1970's smell and look like they still have the original furnishings which are scratched up, wicker is covered in dust, and piles of termite droppings are on floors as they have taken over the insides of the wooden sliding doors. The carpets in the rooms, hallways, and stairs should have been pulled up and replaced 50 years ago. They look worse than seedy Las Vegas hotel rooms, heavily stained with funky smells. Hopefully, they shampoo them once a year, but they don't appear that they do.
If you have any respiratory issues, definitely do not book a room in the North tower, surrounded by "smoking benches" where the toxic fumes go directly into the rooms. Many guests in the cabanas, or on the beach smoke, and all their butts litter the area, are not cleaned up, and the tradewinds bring all the different types of smoke directly into the rooms.
For it being a non smoking hotel, they have many benches set up for smokers where the smoke goes right into the rooms, especially at the walk up only North wing. The staff also can be seen crouching in bushes smoking, or driving around in their golf carts smoking, as does the restaurant crew who vape and smoke next to the monstrosity of the new Maui Brewing Company restaurant and bar. If you are a heavy smoker of marijuana, cigars, and cigarettes, then this is the hotel for you.
The food quality of breakfasts has gone way down since Outrigger took it over in June of 2023. The small, old, general store next to the lobby in front has very limited selections of items and very short hours.
There are no more delicious buffets nor outdoor seating underneath large tents for when it's raining. There is no more restaurant at the front of the hotel either. The cute tiki bar with great drinks, friendly bartenders, and inexpensive food for the family is gone. Also gone is the stage where there was free music and hula, and people often spontaneously danced. It is no longer the friendly, old school Hawaii style hotel that so many people loved about the place. The website needs to be updated, as much of what is shown no longer exists.
The new Maui Brewing Company taking up the whole middle beachfront area of the grounds looks nice, but very out of place. It is overpriced and the food there is not very good. Most of the food is overly seasoned, which makes sense, as the smoking cooks have a lack of taste and smell. When Maui Brewing Company was located in Kahana, they had excellent food, reasonably priced, and it was a fun atmosphere. Those days are long gone, unfortunately.
After Outrigger took over the hotel, from what staff tells me, half the staff family were fired. This hotel, which they have now renamed to it being a "resort," yet having no resort amenities, is no longer the friendly, fun place where visitors and locals alike enjoyed coming to relax at the low-key 1960's Hawaii feel that the hotel used to have.
The pool is small, unheated, and has no jacuzzi. The once beautiful trees and plants were removed to put in the unecessary eyesore of Maui Brewing Company and an Aqualani beach shack where old wooden cabanas line the walkway, further obstructing the views.
So many repeat guests that I've spoken to, really miss what this hotel once was, and say they most likely will not be booking rooms at the "new and improved" Outrigger Ka'anapali Beach Resort in the future.
The only positives are that it is on the stretch of Ka'anapali with the most sandy beach, being next to the Sheraton, which sits next beautiful Black Rock and a...
Read moreI'm editing my review due to the fact that my bf was in a different tower & room via my initial 1st review 5 star rating. He was moved to the much more "Authentic" part of the Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Hotels most Hawaiian hotel room. Although previously stated the hotel staff were helpful, accommodating & friendly. Yes we would get looked at or gawked at or "watched" & "followed" for NO reason other than blatant Racism. My bf no longer felt safe or relaxed which in turn caused me anxiety. My bf would get harassed for parking in perfectly good parking stalls on property as well as harassed for other people's vehicles being parked in certain parking stalls that have NOTHING to do with him or myself but he's getting harassed because his car "looked" just like the car being complained about. Ridiculous! I've been standing to the side out the way minding my own business waiting under the shade of a kukui but tree for my bf so we could walk to the beach together & have security out of nowhere ride up behind me then close besides me demanding to know where I'm going. Like for what reason?? Then another early morning the same security guard accompanied with another security I'm guessing come ride straight up to me so I move to the side to throw away a can in the trash bin demanding if I'm staying here, if I'm not I need to leave, my dog cant be on property we need to leave (my dogs tiny like a good 20lbs maybe) 1st of all I explained I had to grab something I threw my rubbish away & I was leaving but i stopped because you stopped me with your high beams blazing in my face at 6am sherlock. Extremely Rude!! My bf's hotel room was NASTY. It smelt a little like a mixture of toe jams & wet dog. We got heavy duty carpet cleaner spray to mask the funk. The ceiling above the sink was not only see through but there was a ceiling board missing. The sprinklers in the room were already rusting & you could see the green acid slash nickel build up. His AC smelt of previous funk along with a handful of dust bunnies & their guts wiped up across the front of the AC vent more than likely the beginning or mid stages of ASBESTOS. Housekeeping for whatever reason would not replenish his tp or sometimes even his towels. I don't know what that was about because sometimes there were 2 housekeepers & we always tipped. Ron @ the bell desk is an Outstanding Employee, Doctor also Fantastic & lastly the Front desk Wahine especially Mel ALL Extremely Aloha so Thankyou Ladies & Gentleman very much for your help & assistance during our time of hardship towards me & my bf. Mahalo & Thank You to Everyone especially the Housekeeping & Front Desk office workers. Mahalo & Thankyou...
Read moreWe had group of 5 families stayed there for 5 nights. Everytime you ask for something the answer was no. Place is nice, Location is good but service is extremily poor. We had big Ford Transit car and it was not turning on so we took help of a gentleman named Robert to borrow his jumper cable and we turned on the vehicle a day before departure and jumper cable belonged to Robert (who was a securty guy) and it was not a property of resort. Robert agreed to land us for next day also and he left it at resort lobby for us to use it next day and return after we are done using in case if we needed that. Night manager also stated that he is shooting a message to the day team to let us use the cable which belongs to Robert.
Our departure flight was at 5:30 PM and we booked whale watching at 12:30 PM thinking we can finish in 2 hrs and then can go for airport.
So we went to front desk to ask for jumper cable as car was not starting again. Lady came out named Koui Kana and she refused to give us a jumper cable. We asked why and she said she can not. We asked her that it is not resort property and we can buy it from Robert who owens it and if she can connect us with him so we can zelle him and buy it from him and she refused to do so also. I went out side and asked few people to see if they have jumper cable in their car and if we can borrow but a big guy with glasses who I think was security manager asked me not to ask any body else for jumper cable and they started scavangering around us so we don't ask for anyone for help. I don't understand why? They were making all effort so we don't get our car Started and and during the whole process we missed the boat for whale watching which costed us a group about $1100. The resort team ganged up to destroy our day and I don't know what the motive was. I am very upset about this and have not seen this level of hostility from a resort who probably made above 10 to 15 K from us group of 5 family who stayed there for 5 nights. So, guys you think what rating I should give? Is there a way to give -5?
The thing I don't understand is why such hostility to us? During our entire stay we felt like we were neglected and disliked by staff at resort and not only me but entire crew of us 22 people. I am still trying to figure our reason for such hostility. Is it because we are asian indian? is it because we are brown skinned people? I am not asking for refund of lost $1100 for whale watching but atleast if someone from administration reads this and comes back with answer for this would be nice.
Thanks and Have a good day to who...
