I will END the debate about homeless people squatting in public libraries:
Yes, they are human beings, and they have tough lives (whether it’s their fault or not is another debate 😉). BUT we also have the right to enjoy our lives and not be made the villain just because we expect a library to function as a library!
I understand that the homeless person lying there has nowhere else to go. BUT, and listen carefully because I’ve been there myself—I was homeless and lived in a shelter for 4 months—99% of those who stink badly CHOOSE not to shower. How can you explain someone, in today’s world (especially in first-world countries), not having access to a shower for months until they develop a layer of skin and an unbearable smell?
Listen, the homeless person you’re defending by saying, “He’s got it rough, leave him alone”—yes, the same one who is entitled and even bullies people—was my neighbor in the shelter. He had a shower every single day, yet he never used it for the entire 4 months I stayed there.
So yeah, do not feel confused, you are not a bad person, you are not even targeting the homeless : you are calling out the homeless who does not respect himself nor you and took over your library and kicked you out.
Thank you for reading.
P.S. And if he answers, “I have no shelter to go to,” it’s because he was kicked out for bullying and beating up elderly people and vulnerable youngsters. I came from Europe with nothing, and they still gave me a shelter—because I had an ID and I...
Read moreall was good until I noticed my phone battery was low, so I went looking for a spot where I could charge, place full of homeless people, don't mind being around homeless people, until I had to share an outlet with one of them, the guy was charging his laptop while he was using it so I ended u having to stand behind him (he was sitting by by a table inside the closed lunchroom) so I accidentally bumped into him because he was so close to the outlet, so he let out a loud complaint so I apologize, then he didn't Iike that I was standing behind him so he started yelling at me that 'I couldn't stand behind him in a very 'sphyco' manner, I had to call the library aid to come and help me. My advice to the general public stay away from this place, obviously, somewhere along the line it stopped being our library (we residents of miami beach) and it is now the homeless shelter. I HOPE SOMEONE IS MONITORING WHAT THIS GUY WAS SO CONCERNED THAT I MIGHT BE WATCHING...
Read moreSadly this place is full of homeless people. The issue is not the homeless but the fact they are covered in urine and have a strong smell of ammonia. There are beautiful libraries at FIU, UM, NOVA UNIVERSITY but I'm not sure why they don't have a policy for people coming into the building. You have homeless in wheelchairs, dirty bags on tables and all over the floor. You have people's personal items on the table such as toothbrushes and combs. The city has to enforce a strong policy on due to sanitary concerns. They have a quite study area that also has homeless charging phones and due to the size of the room it smells horrible along with the library open space. They have one study room where you can get away from the smell if it's available. Really sad place to come to if you need to study as a student, nothing is wrong with homeless people but they do need to have a decent hygiene. This place honestly reminds me of homeless shelters i have...
