AAA was very frustrating and unhelpful today in dealing with a difficult situation. An elderly man's (I'll call him D) car broke down in front of my house on his way home from the hospital. I, along with a person passing by (I'll call him M), helped get D to a safe location and tried to get his car restarted. We eventually worked with D to figure out that he had AAA and I called on his behalf.
The person at AAA took down D's information and told him that a tow truck would be there in 4 HOURS. D didn't seem to understand this very well and thought that they were on their way, so I intervened and explained to D how long the tow truck would be (keep in mind this happened at 8pm, so 4 hrs is midnight). I tried to talk to the AAA person and see if there was anything we could do, and then tried to talk to M about our options. The AAA person got impatient and told me that he didn't have time to stay on the phone while we figured things out. He scheduled a tow truck to come and got off the line.
We decided to give D a ride home so that he wasn't on the side of the road for 4 hours, and help him call AAA again in the morning to get his car. Afterwards, I tried to cancel the tow truck, explaining the situation to AAA. They were extremely difficult and did not allow me to cancel.
Eventually the tow truck did arrive (after only 1 hr, not 4 hrs as quoted) and the tow truck driver waited around nicely while we went to go pick up D from his house D so that he could get his car towed.
Through this whole endeavor, AAA was very difficult to deal with, provided an absolutely terrible time estimate, and offered no help with the man's circumstance.
I would definitely think twice about getting a AAA membership if I were an elderly person. Their system does not work well for those that need additional assistance in using...
Read moreAVOID!!! I have been a AAA client for homeowner's and auto-insurance since 2015. AAA has dropped our homeowner's insurance saying that our roof showed problems due to age and also that we had not reported a swimming pool. Both are false. I provided receipt showing the roof is 3 years old (still within a 20 yr warranty) and photos. We do not (and never had) a swimming pool. If you look on Google Maps, our house shows a clean roof and no swimming pool, but another house half a block away seems to fit their description. All of this could have been cleared with a visit to my home by an agent (we are less than 15 min away from that office), but they cannot admit a mistake. It sounds like they are just looking for reasons to drop people and will invent reasons for that, even if they are simply that, fabrications. If you can, go somewhere else for your insurance needs! UPDATE: Someone from corporate called me to say that even though the original reasons for dropping my policy where incorrect, they keep the decision to drop my policy because the pictures I sent of the roof "showed loose bricks and sloping". I'm not sure what they meant by that. I replaced the wooden blocks that held the pipes on the roof with a more stable holder from Amazon and I have a brick holding a palm size solar panel for backyard lights. To me it seems they were just looking for excuses to drop my policy. I had good experiences in this branch before, but I do not recommend using AAA for your...
Read moreService not helpful at all. First, I asked for a hard-copy of the DMV Handbook. I was told they didn't have one (fair enough), but when I asked who did they referred me to the DMV. Since then I've heard (unconfirmed) they have them at AAA in Santa Clara. More importantly, I presented the clerk at the entrance with a Certificate of Insurance with no mention of my name or policy. She told me she'd find someone to help me. But she came back and said they didn't deal with that there. I asked who did. She repeated her assertion, saying it was another department. I asked for contact information about that other department, but she just said they didn't deal with that there. Of course, I used the Internet to find the correct department(s). But I figured the local office would have far better resources than me and expected someone to help me find out.
After the review above, I was contacted by the national AAA office which then referred me to the local office. A woman there then contacted me to offer help. She said new DMV handbooks were in and offered to save me one. Then she asked about the accident insurance issue. She was able to assist me whereas the people at the numbers I found on the Internet were not. Very much...
