James Polk, 11th President of The United States.
Polk, is mostly obscure today and his tomb isn't any different. I'd walked past it multiple times in the past having not even knowing it was there, finally able to track it, it's located on Capital Hill but in an area shredded with construction that makes accessibility a challenge.
Polk is the only President to also formerly have been Speaker of The House, he was Governor of Tennessee, having led a political life while he's been somewhat forgotten over time he is generally ranked high by historians amongst president's, known for keeping every single foreign and domestic policy he campaigned he would. He, too, expanded The United States as it was under Polk that the American-Mexican War came to an end, Texas was annexed, and we gained the Oregon territory, after nearly threatening war with Great Britain. It was these early expansions that brought The United States into being a global power, continue expansion too, once again ignited the debates of free-slave States, pressing for Civil War.
He died at 53 years old, in Nashville Tennessee, after an exhausting presidency, ironically, most likely from contracting cholera, during his farewell address tour through The South.
The grave has been moved twice, and debate for another possible move as recent as 2018 has been debated.
Its small, obscure, and frankly for a President that had done so much hasn't been well maintained or taken care of. For all the things Nashville takes pride of, upkeeping one of Tennessees sons, and an important American, hasn't been one of them. It was the least impressive presidential grave I've seen, and rather due to the construction at the time, or lack of markers, it just is sadly underwhelming. Do better, Tennessee! Honor them.
Nonetheless 9/41 Presidential Graves visited, and glad I finally knocked this off.
If you're conveniently in the area, check it out, but wouldn't recommend traveling out of the way to see, or less you're trying to do them...
Read moreIt’s well preserved and obviously maintained. I wasn’t expecting to see a tomb of anyone let alone a former president on the Capitol Grounds but you kind of run into it when you walk around the Capitol Building. Little pieces of history in our daily lives is nice. I think it would be cool to be entombed somewhere besides a graveyard. Maybe behind Broadway or at the local McDonalds. I don’t know, but somewhere people would go and be like, I don’t know who Mike Williams is but he has a cool tomb at the Waffle House. 🤷♂️ Just an idea, but to...
Read moreMy wife and I got up early and walked to the capitol building and ground. It was very pretty and in Nashville if you get up early it is very very quiet. I am a history buff so seeing the statue of the three Tennessee presidents and the tomb of one of my favorite presidents was amazing. Really nice a peaceful spot (on a...
