Now listen, I’m going to try and keep this all nice even though I do have harsh opinions about this place. We were in town for a long weekend for my birthday. On Friday morning, we stumbled upon this place and remembered that I had read great reviews. Went in, and several tables in the front were empty. But the hostess said it was a 40 minute wait. Put our name on the list but ate elsewhere. Saturday, my birthday, we went back. Only one table in the front had people at it and it was 5 ladies who looked like they were finishing up. Was told it was a 45 minute wait. Put our name on the list. Because it was my birthday, I decided that I wanted a great breakfast and we would go shopping while we waited. Once we received our notice that the table was ready we went back. Walked in and gave my name. The hostess pointed to my table and said “it’s over there.” Did not walk us to the table just stayed behind the podium and pointed. Whatever. Then John came with our water without even asking, which I LOVED! We ordered breakfast: French toast, two egg sandwiches (one on a bagel and one on sourdough toast) and a salami sandwich (along with lattes, wine, and a beer). Because the food was taking a little while (the place was full now), we ordered chips and salsa. It was yummy! When the breakfast food came we were very hungry. However the food reminded us of hospital food. Very basic looking, except the French toast. It was soaking in some juice and marinating fruit. But whatever, we just knew it would be good. Now, my egg sandwich on sourdough bread was blah! And that is being nice. Same for the bagel one (the bacon was good on it but it needed more for sure). I don’t even think there was one whole egg on the sandwich. Barely any cheese. It gets served with zero condiments so it was DRY. My husband, who will eat just about whatever you make him, didn’t finish even 1/2 of his salami sandwich because, in his words, it’s not good. Once my friend removed all the soaked bread of the French toast, she said that what she could eat was “not bad.” The atmosphere is cute, John was a great server, and the drinks were great. Just wish the food...
Read moreFrothy Monkey is an awesomely named coffee house with several locations in Nashville. We went to the 5th Avenue North spot near our hotel and had a decent experience for breakfast. The space appears small as you walk in, with somewhat limited seating before you get to the counter, but a much larger room opens up deeper in, so bring everyone!
I had a Biscuit with egg whites and cheese which was awfully nice of them to make me since that particular sandwich isn’t on their menu. It tasted great, though it wasn’t my favorite biscuit texture I’ve had in the south.
I accompanied this with a side of potatoes which also looked great, but the potatoes were not quite crispy which had me thinking they had been prepped a while ago, but they did taste good. (Once I added salt and pepper.)
They have two coffee options - a traditional bold/dark which I got and which was really good. (I asked for it served in a mug which they happily obliged.) They had a more floral/fruity one too plus all kinds of special lattes and teas. My wife had the jasmine mint loose leaf tea which she thought was delightful, light and delicious. It was served with a carafe and the leaves separate in a steeping cup.
She also ordered the Oatmeal with fruit that looked like it had been cut a while ago. She found it to be thick and hard to eat and she needed to ask for more almond milk to loosen it up a bit. They accommodated it and even steamed it for her.
There are monkeys everywhere which makes any experience more enjoyable!
We arrived before 10am and there was no line so service was quick, but then it got super crowded, so we got lucky!
Also they make their own gluten free bread (which my gluten-free wife didn’t have, but good to know there’s a house-made option which is often more exciting then a store-bought loaf of something…)
This was a fine and quick stop which served our needs on the way to our first tourist destination that morning in Nashville…had we more time to go anywhere, we’d probably have chosen one of the other spots in town, but it’s worth stopping in...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I came on Sunday for some brunch. We were barely “greeted” at the door, if you can even call it that. No “hello”, “welcome in”, not even a fake “how are you doing?” Was wasted on us. The “host” pointed at a table for us to go to and left it at that. Once we were sat it took maybe 5-7 minutes for anyone to come to our table and again, no “hello” or anything, just “do you know what you’d like to order/any drinks?” I ordered a hot monkey latte which was good and after receiving it we got our order taken. The food took maybe 15 minutes which we aren’t upset about. My dish was yummy, my boyfriend’s however was very greasy and salty. So greasy that he had to pour the grease into a separate plate: he got the Shrimp and Grits. While I’m totally for restaurants and cafes not having strict dress codes/over the top uniforms I think this location would at the very least benefit from some name tags to distinguish the workers from customers. Better guidelines for what can be worn on the clock would be beneficial too. There was a server wearing an outfit you’d see in the gym, a graphic tee, some gym shorts, and sneakers; a host with an oversized business casual top over some sweatpants; a barista with her hair down when it should be pulled back; and our host and server just looked like some regular guys who walked in and just decided to clock in for the job. As someone who has worked in the restaurant business for some time now, I know that jobs at the very least require workers to look presentable, and half the staff did not, while the other half barely scraped by.
I won’t be going back to...
