Beautiful building and the only building designed by Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) in New York City. It was built between 1897 and 1899. Note the elaborate decorations on the front facade typical for buildings designed by Louis Sullivan. Early in his career Frank Lloyd Wright worked for the firm of Adler & Sullivan. Frank Lloyd Wright later referred to Louis Sullivan as...

This building is the only one in the city built by American architect Louis Henry Sullivan. He’s regarded as one of the “fathers of skyscrapers” and one of America’s greatest architects. Sullivan was one of the main architects in the Chicago School and even mentored Frank Lloyd Wright. This is known as the Bayard-Condict Building and was completed in 1899. What made it stand out at the time was all the terracotta detailing on the facade. Sullivan didn’t follow the same design concepts that were used for commercial buildings. He was the one that said “form follows function,” meaning the building should reflect its structure and not look like it is something else. He believed a commercial building should follow a few conditions, including having the boilers and engines in the basement, ground level would be for retail space, an eye-catching entrance, many stories of uniformed office space and an attic. He also felt this ornamentation was not there just for show, but played an important part into the building and make a skyscraper as a proud and soaring thing. The New York Landmarks Commission has even called this building “the first truly modern skyscraper.” 📍65 Bleecker Street ………. …….. …… ….. …. … … #nychistory #nycrealestate #nycarchitecture #newyork #noho #discovernyc #iloveny #welovenyc #thingstodoinnyc #nyctravel #nyclife #nyctour #bleeckerstreet #didyouknow
