A really, really cool bookstore. You know the selection and inventory is impressive when you go to check your phone and you can't believe how much time you've spent browsing just one bookshelf. I honestly couldn't even begin to look through everything that I wanted to see in my first visit, and for that reason alone I will definitely be coming back since just like a good record store, it's fun to see what kind of hidden treasures they have buried beneath the surface of what's on display.
I liked the additional (and slightly random) merchandise they had. I really got the impression that there's something there for everyone. The selection of graphic novels was better than I had expected, with a pretty impressive collection of Image comics specifically. If you already have a book in mind before going there, good luck leaving with only that one book. I haven't checked to see how the ordering process goes for something they don't have in stock but the next time I go, I'll try to find something to order and edit my review but, I get the impression that it would not be an inconvenience.
The prices were great too, and practically the same as what you would pay online from what I could tell. Even less in some cases, which was especially true for everything in the bargain section. Make sure not to skip that because I did see a few things in there that really caught my eye, and I'm about as picky as it gets when it comes to books and the like so, that's saying something.
The atmosphere and overall vibe of the place was very nice and relaxing. I did notice some seating too, and although I didn't test it so I cannot for sure - I don't think they would mind if you took the time to sit down and read a chapter or two. The store is definitely welcoming and inviting to everyone that walks by. All of the staff that I spoke to were very friendly, genuinely enthusiastic about everything and helpful.
The final verdict:
For me the most important thing when it comes to bookstores is whether or not going there is even worth it when I can just get the book that I already want online for what is typically much less in cost (which I guess rings true for most products these days). With Book Culture it is very much worth it, and it's nice to have that here in LIC. I've only been in the City for about a year and a half but this is easily the best book store I've been to in the Five Burroughs. Well worth a...
Read moreBook Culture stands as perhaps one of the finest literary sanctuaries Queensâif not all of New Yorkâhas to offer. From the moment you step inside, the space welcomes you with a warmth that feels increasingly rare in our digital age.
The main floor is spacious yet cozy, striking that elusive balance between room to browse and intimate nooks to discover. What immediately sets Book Culture apart is the palpable sense that the staff genuinely loves booksânot just selling them, but reading them, discussing them, and carefully curating collections that feel both comprehensive and personal.
Beyond the impressive book selection, the store offers a delightful treasure trove of curiosities that invites exploration. Artisanal soaps, whimsical socks, clever games, and charming mementos are tucked between shelves, creating an experience that transported me back to the wonder of browsing shops as a fifth-grader, where every turn revealed something new and fascinating.
This sense of discovery makes the store's few shortcomings all the more noticeable. The lower level, dedicated entirely to children's literature, stood eerily empty during my visitâa beautifully designed space that seems underutilized. One can't help but imagine how this area might thrive if reimagined as a mixed-use space: perhaps half dedicated to young readers and half transformed into an event area for author signings, book clubs, and community gatherings.
Perhaps the most puzzling omission is the lack of seating. A bookstore without chairs or sofas feels like a garden without benchesâyou're invited to admire but not linger. Whether this is a deliberate strategy to maintain customer flow or simply an oversight, it stands as the one significant drawback in an otherwise enchanting literary environment.
Despite these minor criticisms, I left Book Culture already plotting my return. It's the kind of place that reminds you why physical bookstores matterânot just as retail outlets but as cultural touchstones and community spaces.
Insider tip: Inquire about their free membership program. After spending $200 cumulatively (which happens more quickly than you might expect in a place this tempting), you'll receive a $10 creditâa small but thoughtful reward for supporting this...
