First Presbyterian Church — Attraction in Newport

I attended this church as a child of roughly 7 years of age and older shortly after Rev. Tyler Johnson arrived. I remember him being a tall man, extremely kind, and having a gentle face. He spoke briefly to his congregation, including the children, as they exited after his sermons. My father was career-Navy and our family lived in Portsmouth, RI several times. I remember the pews being of red velvet material and so comfortable that my father fell asleep on occasion. I loved the stone work and the stained glass of the windows. Great experience passing through this church: traditional hymns, prayers, and welcoming community with lots going on. The building is beautiful, with many intricate stained glass pieces inside and a stony, storied exterior.

Pastor seems caring, enthusiastic, invested in the church community, and knowledgeable about the Christian faith. He delivered a thoughtful, practical sermon that drew strongly from Scripture.
