North Charleston Marriott — Attraction in North Charleston

I believe this is the second time in my life I ever left a review for a hotel but this place deserves one and I would be inconsiderate not to leave one. My fiancee son past away unexpectedly and the location was minutes from where he lived. Normally I would choose a cheap hotel to just sleep in because this was not a vacation but I wanted my fiancee in a nice hotel because of the terrible circumstances she was facing. The hotel was very clean and it always smelled very clean. I enjoyed our room very much! The part that stood out the most was the awesome friendly staff there. I never seen anyone go out of their way to be as kind and polite to my fiancee during this time as they were beyond amazing! My fiancee was softly crying in the lobby (nothing those in the bar could hear) but it did not prevent the two ladies behind the front desk to stop what they were doing to go and sit next to her with a box of Kleenex. The one lady hugged my fiancee holding her against her chest and they both spoke very kind words to her. They were unaware of her situation but it did not stop them from showing compassion to a complete stranger. The bartender 'Becca' was also incredibly kind and I made sure she knew that through tips. She also liked the other bartender Brandon because he too was very polite and he also has the same name as her son that passed away. The manager was also extremely polite as we were taken great care of while there. It was as though the staff were informed about us because when I asked the front desk a question about my room and the moment I stated my last name was when that person said, "Oh, so you are Ne*" and received nothing but exceptional friendly service. I stayed from Tuesday to Friday but my fiancee will still be there until Wednesday June 2nd. She has shared each day since I left how the staff is still being extremely kind to her. I was nervous having to leave her there as she has no family there with her but the staff treating her so kindly doesn't have her feeling alone. Wonderful hotel!!! She will be leaving a review too as she was making sure she got names because she loves the staff there that much and wanted each person to know it. She wants to go back to this hotel again because of the staff. I WILL be staying at this hotel again with my fiancee in the near future!! Amazing staff! Maybe next time I can share a review that will include the pool and exercise room as I was unable to use such things under the circumstances. This hotel gave me a lot of mixed feelings, and was definitely a stay that I won’t forget for a long time. I do not think that this hotel is necessarily a bad experience, but expectations are definitely set way too far high for original Marriott hotels in the USA. When we booked the M club lounge, it was specifically stated that it came with the perk of “hors doeuvers”. I was very disappointed when I saw that the hors doeuvers really just consisted of mixed nuts, granola bars, packaged yogurts and soda. The expectations of “hors doeuvers” really consists of perhaps a bread selection, pastries and most importantly perhaps a selection of cold cuts and cheeses. Many American hotels have replaced their offerings for cheaper, packaged goods. The M club lounge provided breakfast, although it was identical to the paid breakfast for ordinary guests. There were no cold cuts or cheese selections for this breakfast, but simply some very plain scrambled eggs, sliced breads and cereals. I will admit however, biscuits and gravy were offered as a breakfast food, showing that the hotel does truly care about introducing their guests to a delicacy from the region which they are in. The attendants were admittedly friendly, as well as the housekeeping staff. Marriott failed to deliver to our expectations, the expectations which they instilled in us. I’ve been to Original Marriotts in Montreal and Copenhagen, and the comparison really draws light to how much Marriott hotels in the US are downsizing their services, while still increasing per night rates. When you go to a Residence Inn or Springhill Suites, you know what to expect from the services, and not to expect anything extravagant, but the Original Marriott gives themselves a huge name, when they can’t live up to it. We came down to Charleston for a little getaway and stayed a few days. By Valentines day the hotel we were originally at was BOOKED and everything around it was near $1,000! We found this little gem and stayed a bit farther but location was still great. Just over the bridge you can reach mount pleasant, folly beach, james island, etc. There's a shopping mall/Tanger outlets near this area so plenty of stores. The hotel itself is really nice. The lobby is huge. Fitness room, pool, business rooms, lounge, bar. You name it. The bar was packed at night and was gorgeous (I don't drink, so I just glanced) The rooms were beautiful! Business luxury with a twist of modern/rustic (steampunk, maybe? hm.) The showers were extremely nice. The TV allows you to stream from Netflix, Youtube, & Pandora as well as lets you plug in gaming systems. Plenty of charging stations, a coffee/tea maker well stocked, ice buckets/glasses for other drinks, refrigerator, safe. Closet as well as extra space to hang your clothing. Very nice couch with a light for reading/working as well as a desk. You're able to order from the app or over the phone for food until 10pm - I think late night bites are a bit later. Unsure!

The staff was very friendly, but the only issue I have was the "authorization" charge. I was charged $200 when I booked online and asked if there was a deposit. The woman at the desk said we were "all set." I then see a charge for $50 (deposit) and another charge for $251. I called to see what was going on and the explanation was that one was a preauthorization charge and would fall off in the morning, which it didn't. It's still pending. I could see how this could cause a huge issue for some people. To avoid this I recommend either paying over a third-party site so you know you've already paid or just...
