We decided to take other’s recommendations for a group of kids under 12 and we were not disappointed. What a cool place! The fire truck simulator was really neat and each child got a chance to drive it. We wished there had been a siren in the simulator instead of just a horn but still really fun.
One thing I didn’t see many review websites mentioning are the trivia punch cards. You grab one and then there are little boxes on all the displays where you can punch what you think the answers are. At the end, they have a small surprise at the gift shop. The kids and the adults had a blast doing this and it was also very educational.
I found the layout to be great and my children went back and forth between displays and the slide/poll in the center repeatedly. The staff was also friendly and the gift shop actually had good gifts (most of which was not cheap garbage that was overpriced like you find in a lot of places).
Great job on this place. My kids actually asked to go back but we ran out of time....
Read moreOn a day trip to Charleston, we took our boys, ages 6 and 8, to this museum. This was our 2nd visit and they loved it! My firefighter husband loved the extensive collection of old fire trucks dating back all the way to the 1800's, but my kids loved the fire "playground" with the slide and fire pole, the fire truck simulator where they can sit in the truck and pretend they're going on a call, and the video in the theater. Don't skip the theater show! It's only about 10 minutes and is really cool/interactive. It has a very good and kid-friendly explanation about what causes fires, how to prevent fires, and how to safely escape a fire by having a safety plan. If you have an older child, he/she may be interested in the history of fire fighting displays, etc. You can definitely do this whole museum in an hour, but could spend more or less time depending on your family's interests. Don't forget to design your free fire-fighter badge sticker on the way out and visit the gift shop to get your kids a free...
Read moreThis museum is great! It has many beautiful fire trucks to see and plenty of info about them. The safety program is included and is so great. It was incredibly engaging and even the Littles were captivated the entire time. Kids under 12 are free and children 12 and older, to include adults, are six dollars per person. I feel that price is great considering the size of the museum and that kids are free. You could do this in one to two hours. I also adore the staff. I’m pretty sure they’re actual firefighters in the community and they were so nice, pleasant and knowledgeable. There’s even a small playground inside. That was a great outlet for kids to use. Also, the simulator was the best firetruck simulator that we’ve been on, and we have been on four different ones. Additionally, kids get to make their own badge and it’s very simple and cute. We have been to so many museums, so I can be very picky, but this is definitely on my recommendation list for...
