I have been a loyal guest of InTown Suites since 2022 and even left a positive review in the past. However, after my recent stay at the North Arco Lane location in North Charleston, I feel compelled to share my experience so others know the reality of this property.
Severe Roach Infestation From the very first day until the day I checked out, the room was crawling with roaches. I had to constantly spray, stomp, and kill them — easily over 100 during my stay. I did not bring them in; they were present from day one. This made the stay extremely uncomfortable.
Unsafe and Unprofessional Environment The property is filled with drug dealers, drug users, and prostitution activity. Groups of men sit in chairs blocking the staircases as if they own them. Every time I went up or down, I had to squeeze through and say “excuse me.” Guests are openly hanging around, monitoring who comes and goes. This is not a safe environment for families, women traveling alone, or anyone with children.
My Kitten Went Missing from Inside My Room The most disturbing incident was when my kitten went missing from my locked room. She has a GPS tracker on her collar, which showed she was still on the property but not in my room. I later found her four doors down — which means someone entered my room and allowed her to get out. When I raised this concern, staff brushed it off, saying “she wasn’t supposed to be there.” Regardless of policy, she is my property. If she goes missing, I have every right to call the police. The way this was handled was unacceptable and dismissive.
Dishonesty and Retaliation by Staff At checkout, I spoke with the front desk worker, Shawn/Sean (light-skinned male with dreadlocks). He told me directly that he would not place me on a “do not rent” list. A week later, I was informed I was in fact placed on that list, and accused of “threatening staff” — which is completely false. I have the entire incident on video, including my calm conversation with staff and Shawn/Sean himself saying I would not be put on the list. This shows I was lied to and unfairly targeted for simply standing up for myself and my missing kitten.
Unreturned Deposit Despite Room Condition After being checked out for almost a week, my $50 deposit was not returned. The only reason given was “because of a cat,” not because of any damages. I have a full video of the room after I left showing it was in good condition, if not better than when I checked in.
No Accountability from Management I spoke with the manager, Dewey, who instructed me to contact corporate. While I plan to do so, I also want others to know how poorly this property is run. Guests are treated unfairly, lied on, and retaliated against when they raise valid concerns.
After being a faithful guest for years, this experience has shown me this location has no integrity, no professionalism, and no concern for guest safety or property.
Do not stay at this property. • If you have pets, they could go missing and you’ll be blamed. • If you have children, the environment is unsafe due to drugs and prostitution. • If you expect honesty or respect, you will not find it here.
This property is grimy, unsafe, and untrustworthy. I will be contacting corporate with my videos and filing a police report to document what happened. Guests deserve to know the truth...
Read moreInTown Suites' unofficial motto seems to be "We do [whatever] to keep our prices low." At this location, they seem to keep prices low by not maintaining the property in any way. In my room, the toilet leaked, the handle kept falling off the tap in the shower, one of the stove burners barely worked, the carpet wasn't particularly clean, and someone had intentionally installed the wrong striker plate on the door for the lock (it wasn't just shifted--it blocked half the deadbolt!), leading to a non-functional deadbolt. The security catch wasn't much better--it was held on by one screw and would definitely have popped out had anyone tried to force the door. Free internet is worth what you pay for it--it's about dialup speed.||||My room came with a cockroach trap in the kitchen, so I got to check out what kind of bugs live with me--surprisingly there wasn't much on the trap, but the plastic-covered pillows and mattress lead me to believe this location has had serious insect problems. Whatever bit me while I was sleeping also leads me in that direction. They don't look like bed bug bites, but given that my toes got bitten it must have happened while I was in bed. I've gotten fewer bug bites spending the night in the woods in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.||||This location also has no non-smoking rooms (despite the "no smoking" signs on the doors, which evidently cost too much to remove--the manager actually told me this) and seems to be popular with chain smokers. Lovely.||||Most of the other guests seemed to be construction workers from neighboring states. They all seemed fine to me. I didn't see any evidence of prostitution or drug dealing, but I did see the North Charleston PD swing through the parking lot on patrol on a very regular basis.||||The hotel's target market definitely includes people who've gotten evicted from their apartments, and the "rule book" they give you at check-in is pretty funny. No walking around shirtless, no drinking in the parking lot, no leaving kids alone in the room, no guns (this is literally the only hotel I've stayed at that has ever had that policy, and I'm sure it's ignored--I did), etc. It would suck to be stuck here for a monthly rent that would actually get you two one-bedroom apartments or an entire house in this part of town.||||On the plus side, I stayed here for my first week of a new job while looking for a 'real' place to live. Staying here meant I was VERY motivated to find a place. Also, it's across the street from an outlet mall and within ~3 blocks of a Walmart and all manner of places to get a cheap meal (Chick-Fil-A, Panda Express, Panera, Cici's Pizza, etc.).||||The short version: this hotel is falling apart at the seams. Unless this is literally all you can afford, stay elsewhere. I'll sleep in my car before I spend...
Read moreWorst experience I have ever had. I made reservations and was told I could check in at 11 am. The travel time didn't take as much time as I had thought so we got there an hour early and waited for the office to open. Finally at 11 I try to check in and they say they don't have a room available. Yet I was able to make the reservations?? Even the lady at the desk doesn't understand how the reservation corporate number can make reservations without checking with booking. She urged me to call around and see if there is any other location that has a room. When I got on the phone with that corporate number and explained the situation the first thing he said was that's bookings problem, not reservations. Idc whose problem this is!! I made a reservation for a room thinking bc I was able to make a reservation, there would be a room waiting for me. The lady I talked to at the location calls me and tells me someone "just checked out." But of course it won't be ready until it's cleaned and she advises me she will personally call when the room is ready. At 3 pm I go up there and ask if the room is ready. Of course it is! But their system is down and couldn't call, nor can they check me in. She tells me if I go get cash, she can check me in tonight. So I go get cash out of the closest ATM (5 min away max) and when I get back she is gone. The office is closed. So with no other hotel having availability for a two bedroom suite in this area at 5pm now, I'm not sure what to do. This all could have been avoided by the reservation team checking with booking to see if there was a room available before making my reservation. I'm dealing with this situation for my fiancé who is brought to this area by work, I'm also 7 months pregnant and it has taken 6+ hours to get into this hotel. He couldn't have dealt with this mess while at work so because of their ignorance he would have believed he had a hotel room waiting on him when he got off of work. I'm glad I ended up coming on this trip for his sake and the hotels because he would have done more than just wrote a bad review. Never again will I ever come to this area nor this...
