We recently spent a weekend in Maine for Andy's birthday and had a great time! We go to Maine at least once per summer and stay with family, but this year, Andy's family treated us to a few nights at Anchorage by the Sea. This is a beautiful oceanfront resort within walking distance to most of the awesome shopping and dining in Ogunquit. We can't wait to go back! What do you like to do in Maine? I’ll save you the read, just don’t. This is our first time staying at Anchorage by the Sea and will be the last time. We originally booked a room in the “Back Tower.” Which we were certain was supposed to be a double queen. We arrived to be sent across the street to another part of the property only to find a (2) double bed. The room was not worth $400 a night by any stretch. Just take a look at the heat pump head located in the stair tower, it’s full of mold and mildew and looks like it’s never been cleaned. The room itself was just okay, the mattresses absolutely suck. And the fake suede head broads made it feel extra cheap and dirty. Furthermore the air conditioning was not on it the room and the room temp was 78 degrees. The cover to the air conditioning unit was also falling off. The lamp on the end table the conveniently blocks all the light switches for the room was just another head shaker. For anyone curious it’s room 284. You’d think when you receive a message that your room is ready and they are charging you $400 for one night that at least they could turn the air conditioning on. I looked on the website to find 5 double queens on the lower shore (main property) that were available for a cheaper price. I called and spoke with guest services. The woman I spoke to was extremely short and hung up before I could even finish asking the final question about the possibility of price increase. Her lack luster costumer service continued when I arrived as, she threw the new room keys down the counter at her coworker with this attitude of displeasure and annoyance. I had to ask prior to leaving if there was any sort of price increase, not because I wanted to argue it, but simply as a paying customer it’s something I want to know. Both ladies behind the counter gave me the nope it’s the same price, even though the room price online was less than the original room price. The new room, 103 lower shore is decent. You can tell they’ve updated the rooms on this portion of the property. The mattresses still absolutely SUCK!! We’ve walked by here for years and thought wow it looks nice there. I can assure you it’s not!! It’s over priced and not worth your hard earned money. You can find way better stays in Ogunquit.

The restaurant was great and most of the staff was wonderful, but our stay was ruined by the lack of management in their pool area. They allow guests (though they say it's discouraged) to sneak into the pool area at 4 am and reserve large amounts of pool chairs for the entire day even if they will only be at the pool for an hour or 2. About a dozen families took ALL of the chairs and left hundreds of other guests without seating while they weren't even at the pool. It's an incredibly selfish practice and I'm appalled that management condones this (by not setting a policy or stepping in). We showed up at the opening time (9 am) 3 days in a row to find no available chairs and only a handful of people in the pool. Hours later and the guests who "reserved" the chairs still hadn't shown up. There are about 70 or so chairs available and on one day we counted 44 unused by 11:00 am and 35 (HALF) still unused by 2:00. I watched one women reserve 10 chairs for her family of 3 on a DAILY basis. Other guests were sitting on the ground, had their belongings piled in corners, or just left while the handful of selfish guests were off doing something else and not even using the chairs they "reserved" with a towel and special towel clips. The response I got from the manager on duty (her name escapes me, but I believe it started with an R) was "Sorry, I don't know what to tell you". She didn't even offer to bring in more chairs! We will not be returning until they resolve this problem. It would not be ok for someone to “reserve” a hotel parking space or a table at the restaurant for an entire day with their personal belongings so why is it ok to hold pool chairs that are going unused for hours at a time?!? It’s not.

Beware of staying at the Anchorage that appears to be under new management! My family and I have been coming for the last five years and it’s a tradition. We booked two nights this year for Memorial Day weekend. We actually didn’t book until Friday morning when we saw the forecast and our work plans changed. There was a room available so we grabbed it, we were so excited. On the way up we received a phone call that they overbooked and didn’t have a room for us (despite my card being charged AND receiving a confirmation #) I have never heard of such a thing at a hotel. When I pressed the issue and asked for some kind of compensation/explanation for our travels and plans being ruined, I was met with attitude and no remorse. The manager on duty who wouldn’t share her name actually said “I don’t know why you’re on your way here now your room wouldn’t be ready anyways” and insisted this was not her fault. They magically were able to accommodate us for one night so we tried to make the best of it. Well upon checkout, when shaking the sheets out for our child’s toys, we were met with some very suspicious bug shells and stained sheets!! We told staff and their response was “ok we’ll tell maintenance” No compensation, no apologies, no phone call back 1 week later. I asked for the general managers email and was told “his name is too long to write down” My husband pressed the issue and we have emailed and no response. I would stay far away, and appears we aren’t the only ones with this experience!

Christian was very friendly and welcoming at check-in. Room was a little disappointing - bed was hard and bathroom sucked. Location and view were phenomenal. Awesome hot tub.
