I will start by saying the BLT roll up I ordered was delicious! However, it took over 30 minutes from the time I ordered and paid at the counter to the time I received the sandwich. I admit that I visited the Village Food Market one time last year and had a similar experience, so maybe shame on me. I was hoping that they had ironed out their process by now and, based on the quality of the sandwich I had last year, I was willing to give it another go. Alas, things have not improved. Here's how it goes when ordering take away in person - order at the counter and play. You are given a piece of paper with an order number on it. No further instructions are given. Based on last year's experience, I walked outside and looked at the window where they scotch tape up your order when it is ready to pick up. There were a few orders hanging there so figured the process was the same as last year so I waited outside with a few other hopefuls. The entire time I waited there were, at most, two orders taped on that glass - yet we could see the sandwiches being made quickly inside the shop (we later found out there is a different process if you email your order, which is exactly what I will do in the future if I return). After a while a guy standing next to me said he had been waiting over 30 minutes (and it was HOT) so went inside to inquire about his order. He came out with his sandwich and told all of us waiting that we better go inside and ask because they had neglected to tape up the receipt for his order, so he had waited patiently for naught. Inside was bedlam! Someone who appeared to be a manager was announcing that we should all go outside and wait for our order to be posted in the window (which we already know is not necessarily the case so we didn't budge). I finally saw a receipt finally being taped up and stepped outside to see MY Number! Oh yay, finally! So back in I go and wait at the "main register" as directed to pick up my sandwich. I wait behind many people placing orders, as I see the sandwiches piling up to the left of the cashier. Then the cashier gets to the family of four who takes forever to order as they discuss the virtues of mayo vs mustard and who should split a sandwich...ugh - and I am at wits end. I finally started holding up the piece of paper I was given with my number on it in hopes that someone would save me from this insanity (plus I was very hungry!). Finally the same guy with some authority saw me and yelled for someone to 'get over here and give these people their sandwiches'. It's a hectic and confusing process for such a busy place and they really need to come up with a different design. Or go the email route as I will...
Read moreIf you’re staying in Ogunquit and looking to grab some groceries or items for a picnic, you must stop in to Village Food and Market!
Village Food and Market is an upscale, small grocery store and deli. The amount of products they have in there is astounding. You wonder how they fit everything!
Village Food has everything to stock the fridge, or the picnic basket. They have a solid selection of dry/shelf stable goods and snacks. The price on those items is marked up quite a bit, I’d suggest procuring those items elsewhere.
They have an incredible wine and craft beer selection with some incredible wines and beers to choose from. A majority of folks stopping in were there to pickup a quality bottle of wine.
They do have a deli counter with a solid selection of lunch meat, pasta salads, and more! We ordered some Mortadella to go into our picnic basket. I grabbed an Italian-meat charcuterie tray with prosciutto, capicola, and salami.
I also grabbed some incredible “Port Wine” cheese spread. It was great paired with crostini.
They have a great selection of pre-made, packaged items. I grabbed some olives and assorted cheese cubes to accompany the meats. The deli also has a nice selection of salads, dips, and the like. There is a plethora of brands I haven’t come across before. They truly try to stock the best artisanal brands and products.
For those looking to satisfy their sweet tooth, they do have a small bakery case with assorted pastries, pies, cakes, and cookies. I wasn’t a big fan of their baked goods, I found they lacked flavor. They did look visually appealing.
I would highly recommend this market and deli to locals and tourists alike. The product selection is very unique and the service is phenomenal. The quality of the product offered is worth the increase in price.
I do recommend bringing your patience. The place tends to get very busy and it is tight in the store. Be prepared to let folks pass you frequently.
I look forward to visiting...
Read moreIf there is a worse way to run sandwich-preparation I have not seen it. You place the order at the counter like anywhere else. After you pay You are given a ticket with a number on it. You exit the store and queue up outside waiting for one of the sandwich guys to tape a similar ticket on the inside of the window. This is not a pick-up window. It is the large wall-window on the front of the market. And the spot where they tape these completed-order tickets is three feet to the right of the only door to the market. So, basically the entry / exit to the store has a large number of people congregated, waiting to see if the guy taped up any new tickets on the inside of the big window. You can’t see the little numbers from more than a few feet so every time he tapes up a little piece of paper everyone moves around to try to figure it out. The wait is long - can be 20-30 minutes from when you have paid until when your magic number arrives. When it does, you go back inside and they give you your sandwich. No napkins, utensils. And no obvious place to get that stuff within the chaotic environment of the store. Oh, and I ordered one sandwich on a gluten-free wrap. There was an undisclosed surcharge of $4.50 for that one. And I got onions without asking for them. Otherwise the food was good.
Editing review due to Owner’s comment on impracticality of customers waiting inside: I agree. Outside is fine. But ditch the little tickets taped to the glass near the entry doorway. Invest in a digital sign. Mount it on interior window space AWAY from the entry door. The customers will see their number and not walk up to the doorway every two minutes to see if their...
