Foster Gwin Gallery is one of the great treasures of San Francisco. Specializing in Bay Area abstract expressionism from the period between 1945 and 1975, the gallery is a beautifully curated space showcasing works that tell the story of a remarkable creative movement, much of it born right here in the Bay Area. Collier Gwin, the owner, is not only an expert and honest dealer, but also a fixture of the San Francisco community—deeply respected and well-loved by those who truly know him. His assistant Lori is always welcoming and helpful, and their wonderful dog, Ernest, is part of the charm that makes every visit special. There was a news story a few years ago that may have left the wrong impression of Collier. The truth is, moments like that—whether they’re fairly represented or not—tend to humble us all. I can say from personal experience that Collier is someone who carries that experience forward with patience and grace. If you’re in San Francisco, I highly recommend stopping by. It’s a beautiful gallery—and Collier is someone well worth knowing.

What happened outside Foster Gwin Gallery is beyond disgraceful. To see the owner deliberately spray a homeless woman with cold water is not only cruel, but a shocking display of inhumanity and moral bankruptcy. Art is supposed to elevate the human spirit, to foster empathy and understanding, yet this act revealed the exact opposite: a heart devoid of compassion. No matter the circumstances, treating another human being with such callousness is indefensible. This shameful behavior will forever tarnish the name of Foster Gwin Gallery, and it stands as a dark reminder that prestige means nothing without basic human decency.

Collier runs a real fine gallery—one of those rare places where you want to linger, absorb, and make associations within and among the artwork. The space is thoughtfully divided into parlor-like rooms with lounge chairs and sculpture, each room devoted to a single artist or a theme that invites contemplation. I was impressed by the gallery’s focus on mid-20th-century San Francisco artists. Collier and his staff are professional, knowledgeable, and clearly care about both the art and the experience they’re creating. I especially liked the art work of Jean Varda.

I am saddened by all the unfair, judgmental reviews of Collier Gwin’s gallery. It is a beautiful place with an exquisite hand-curated selection of art.

Having known Collier for nearly 20 years, I can attest to his kindness, generosity and good intentions. While I'm not attempting to justify his actions—nor is he—it's profoundly unfair that his entire life and identity are being reduced to a 10-second video clip. How many of us would want our worst 10 seconds to define our whole lives? He was simply the unfortunate one whose moment of poor judgment was caught on camera.

My friend Collier has lost his business, friends and family and reputation. It’s heartbreaking to watch. if we are all honest with ourselves, we all have 10 seconds of our life (at least) that we had very bad behavior and poor judgement. We are all just lucky we were not caught on video.

This situation offers us a powerful reminder about the power of context and the importance of empathy. In an age where moments can be instantly captured and widely shared, it's easy to jump to conclusions and define individuals by isolated incidents. However, true understanding comes from looking beyond a single snapshot and recognizing the complex tapestry of a person's character and life. For Collier Gwin, a good man whose life has been utterly destroyed by this event, this lesson is particularly poignant. Let's strive to extend grace and remember that we all deserve to be seen for more than our...
