My mother and I came across Joe Hamer Salon by chance while she was staying at a nearby hotel. We decided to walk in without an appointment, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made.
My mother had her hair blown out by Ryan, who was kind, professional, and incredibly skilled. While she was finishing up, I decided to get a haircut in preparation for starting law school the following week. Ryan took the time to understand what I was looking for and delivered exactly the look I had in mind. It was clean, sharp, and professional. He made sure every detail was right and gave me a cut that helped me feel confident and ready for the next chapter.
A week into law school, I realized the cut, though excellent, was a bit too similar to everyone else’s. I went back to the salon and asked Ryan if there was any way to make it more distinctive. He welcomed me in on the spot without an appointment, listened closely to what I wanted to change, and adjusted the cut immediately. He added variation to the length on top and gave it a slightly more creative edge. He didn’t charge me for the follow-up and went out of his way to make sure I was completely satisfied.
The salon itself is beautiful, calm, and impeccably run. Everyone who works there operates at the highest professional level. Now that I’ve relocated to San Francisco, I’m truly grateful to have found Joe Hamer Salon, and especially Ryan. His precision, care, and integrity as a stylist are rare.

Read moreI booked a men’s haircut with Ryan at Joe Hamer Salon while visiting from Idaho for a wedding. I had grown my hair out on purpose, expecting a clean, sharp cut from what seemed like a high-end salon.
Their website says prices are based on time and technique, which gave me confidence. Ryan was polite and took his time, but the result didn’t reflect skill or experience. I had to guide him throughout the cut, asking him to trim more, even things out, and fix the line in the back. I showed photos of what I wanted from the start, but it didn’t come close.
His trimmer also kept pulling my hair, and he kept apologizing. He seemed unsure, and it showed. There was no final cleanup either, he took the cape off and left the loose hairs untouched.
That night at the wedding rehearsal, several people pointed out how bad the cut looked. I was embarrassed. The next day, I paid $45 at a barbershop just to have it fixed and feel presentable for the wedding.
I don’t mind paying $75, $100, or even $200 for a haircut, as long as the quality is there. I’ve paid those prices before, and when the work is solid, I leave happy. This wasn’t that.
I wasn’t going to leave a review, but felt I had to, I was genuinely disappointed. At this price point, customers deserve better. If you’re going to charge premium prices, you need to deliver...
Read moreI am so happy that in my trip to San Francisco I discovered this place! I just needed a haircut + coloring, but it's always scary to get it at an unfamiliar place, especially before an important event. I got super lucky that I got April who made my hair look really smooth, classy and shiny, and made a ton of difference with how confident I felt at an event. April was kind, welcoming and listened carefully to what I needed. She cut my hair perfectly to the exact right length, she made excellent recommendations on the shampoo for me to use that makes my hair look so much better, and she also suggested that I tweak my hair style to fit me better, and then taught me to do it on the spot. The next day she did a touch-up before my flight for free and showed me some styling tips and tricks. After I got back home I was able to replicate the style with the hints she gave me, and I can't be happier with my looks right now. I can't thank April enough and can really recommend this place to anyone. Thank you Joe Hamer Salon, you guys...
