I'm a local and LOVE visiting Springmaid. A friend and I grabbed lunch and headed straight for the pier to eat and have some great scenery. However, when I walked into the store front to pay for my access to the Pier, we were ignored by 3 employees, 2 on and 1 off the clock. The Eldest of these was a shorter woman with a VERY poor attitude, seemingly just because we were there. After pretending my friend and I didn't exist until I had to actually interrupt their chat to pay to go on the Pier, we then get to pay and I go to pick up my things and head out to enjoy my lunch and this lady who had zero interest in helping us gives me a hard time for not going straight for the door "the pier is threat way", I guess she wanted me to get out of there so she could continue her personal chatter and not have to worry about helping a customer. I had not spoken a word of my discomfort to my friend and just tried to ignore the way I was being talked to a treated until she made comment about "how rude that lady was." And it was at that moment I decided it was worth leaving a review. The Pier access needs an automated ticket system if the people who work there don't want to do their job.. I think the entire staff should prioritize taking care of the customer instead of indulging in personal chatter on the clock, in a city with stellar hospitality to be treated like this at such a cornerstone location is...
Read moreWe were here for a convention and I was pleasantly surprised. An older hotel that doesn't look that great from the street but is beautiful on the ocean side. The rooms were clean and the staff friendly. The breakfast buffet wasn't bad. It's better the earlier in the morning you go (eggs not as dried out). Plenty of variety from waffles to made-to-order omelets. Free access to the pier was fantastic. I spent a morning just watching the locals fish. Hotel is located at the end of the airport runway so it is a bit noisy at times, but it's also interesting to watch the planes come over the hotel so low. We went to St. Martin's in the Caribbean to see that!
It's a bit of a walk to some of the areas for handicapped people but it is very family friendly. The kiddie pool and lazy river at the Live Oak section are popular. Live Oak is probably best for families with young children.
The elevators aren't the cleanest and the room doors open to the outside which would not be convenient to arrive or depart during a rain storm. But the ocean view from every balcony is very nice.
Located in South Myrtle which is older does not have the modern restaurants like North Myrtle but it's not as crowded either. Check out the shopping area across Hwy 17! Brand new and awesome to walk around.
We would definitely come back to this hotel if we plan another trip to...
Read moreVery frustrating. Lost $15 worth of 3 oz. triangle weights, hooks and clasps/line with shrimp baited hooks getting caught FOUR times in two hours by casting out about 50+ yards on the left side of pier (facing ocean).
Came back into bait shop and told clerk they needed to dredge the bottom of the ocean out 100 yards on each side of the pier. She responded the old destroyed pier and all its debris, knocked over in a past storm, was still under the water out to the left.
Two other people were constantly getting bottom rigs stuck tonight near me and not happy. I have fished all up and down the Atlantic Coast off of piers and never had this kind of trouble with my fishing gear.
If you use weights and bottom fish I would go elsewhere. I will not be coming back. Plus, paying $13 just to fish until 10 PM is nuts. If you want to walk it or use the restrooms get ready to pay $3. And the same pair of gloves I bought at a WalMart for $4.49 earlier in the day they were asking $12 for. The Doubletree Hotel by Hilton really needs to look into the pricing structure of everything in the bait & tackle shop...
