Nice little trail! Could use some upkeep in some sections though. This part is free to access even though box canyon waterfall charges $5. You might have to park somewhere along the highway if the box canyon parking is full though. Some of the stairs on the trail are a little rundown. Ice is all melted for the season but still a beautiful little hike through the rocks with a view of the mountains! Dog friendly too. This is a loop hike that leads to a bridge that crosses the creek where you can see the dam too. Supposedly the loop trail on the west side is closed at some point due to fire mitigation but the nicer part of the trail with the views is on the east (highway side) anyways! If you have time, take the detour and follow the signs for the ouray perimeter trail. It will cross highway 550 and take you to the other side and take you up even higher for even...
Read moreOuray ice climbing area is fantastic and amazing. HOWEVER! If you are going to the ice festival, be aware that if you do not sign up for the clinics, there are only like 2-5 routes that you have to share with EVERYONE who comes around the country. They do NOT make this clear on their website (it’s at the very bottom in small print and they say there is an map online before the festival starts in January, but you don’t find out until you actually get there). This year there were even fewer open areas than the 2024 festival. And the clinic guides get very upset at you if you get confused about markings. You are better off coming not during the festival and just come a random weekend and rent gear in town. You might spend a little bit more for gear, but you’ll be able to climb more than 1-2 routes for the entire...
Read moreI had the amazing opportunity to traverse the via ferrata in the Ice Park. I was with a group and had a guide with us. I didn't find it challenging, but some in the group did, but I regularly hike and workout, so I'm sure that made a difference.
This was an awesome experience. I actually considered renting equipment and doing it again the next day.
It was a great course with so many beautiful views. I can't recommend this enough. I would say that I have a "healthy fear" of heights, just meaning that I'm not unsafe when in a situation involving heights, and I felt very safe the...
