While riding thru the town of Ouray on a motorcycle trip, we came across the Box Canyon Falls Park. We decided to go and check out this unique waterfall and headed there. After winding thru a short road, we came to a small parking lot. Trying to find a parking spot can be challenging. That explained why some people parked a little ways away and walked to the entrance office. Once we parked and made our way into the office, we had to purchase tickets. Tickets were $7 adults, $6 seniors (75 and older free) and either $4/$5 for kids. Once thru the office, there is a water cooler where you can fill up your water bottle. The first path to the right led down to the base is the waterfall. It is quite a fun excursion and a pathway has been constructed (just watch your head). At the bottom you realize that the river has made a hole in the mountain and water is coming out of the canyon wall itself. It is quite beautiful and well worth the walk. On the way back, as you get back to the office, you realize there is a path to the top of the canyon where there is a bridge. This party is not for the faint of heart. When they say it is a steep and challenging climb, they mean it. You first have to climb a steep stairway. That is the easy part. Then you navigate your way through a narrow steep Rocky trail. This is where the water bottle you filled up comes in quite handy. All the hard work is well worth the view from the top where there is a bridge over the canyon. Hopefully you brought a camera... The path past the bridge goes into a cave entrance that someone said leads to a path that goes to town. I did not explore that. Maybe...
Read moreIn the waning light, as the day drew its curtains close, my feet steered me to the fabled Box Cañon Fall. The forest whispered tales in the soft cadence of rustling aspen leaves, only to have their words drowned by the increasingly thunderous voice of the falls.
Each step I took towards the shimmering curtain was on a walkway made of what seemed like almost-transparent steel. It dangled aloft, a tightrope walker's challenge, and I gripped its cold railings, inching forward, heart filled with a mixture of awe and trepidation. The roar grew, a symphony orchestrated by millennia of nature's artistry.
The chasm before me, a masterpiece carved by countless eons of relentless water and indifferent weather, framed the cascading wonder. It wasn't what tales or imaginations had conjured. Its might, springing forth from the mountain's secretive abyss, resonated with something primal within me. Such is the raw, unyielding power of water.
Descending the metallic tendrils of steps to the canyon's base, I glimpsed the waterfall embarking on another odyssey, winding its way through the valley's embrace. It's a sight, a sensation, that words can only hope to capture. To truly know it, one must stand there, eyes closed, letting the spirit of the place seep into every pore.
An experience? Most certainly. One I'd say is best imbibed firsthand. To let the rush of water and the hush of wonder wash over you. A pilgrimage of nature's might, waiting to be embarked upon. Highly...
