One of two other museums in Truckee, the Truckee jail museum tells us the history of how the jail came into being in the silent lumber town of Truckee where crime rates were generally low until early twentieth century. There was a really friendly Truckee resident who spoke to us rather passionately about the jail and the two cells inside that was formerly a containment facility for murderers and drunken prisoners. She also told us that the popular phrase, “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite” was originally used in Truckee to share the insight that wired mattresses had to be regularly tightened in order to sleep comfortably in an apparent reference to the prison beds.

Came to Truckee from the great white north. After reading 12 Donner party books I thought it was time to come to town. Greg, who is the president and curator of this establishment is so personable and knowledgeable. As a native, he has many in depth and unique stories that I'm sure you can only get from him. He was even kind enough to come in on his day off to give me and my mum a personal one on one tour. Thanks again and cant wait to come back.

Truckees Multifloor jail is good place to start history tour. Has limited opening hours so call ahead for times. Block away from Truckee Southern Pacific/Union Pacific Railroad Museum.🚂 picture of Christopher Columbas statuette in Archway of the home next to river street Bridge built by Francis Finnegan in 1876.

Okay. This place is tiny but cool. The docents (one on each floor) are very helpful and full of fascinating history. Stick around long enough to hear some of their stories and ask them questions about what you see to elicit fun details. You aren't charged to enter and see everything, but please make a donation so that this treasure remains open for many...
