I found this place on Google maps, looking for a place our friend remembered from about 30 years ago...this wasn't it, but it was a great replacement, maybe even better!! The castle is completely enclosed, so you ring a bell at the entrance gate to get in and then you have your key for letting yourself in and out. The building has quite a history and the walks on the Moenchsberg could not be beat! We even walked to the Fortress from here, never having to go down into the city at all. The closest restaurant was at the Modern Art Museum where the elevator down into the city is. If you eat there, they include a free ticket back down into the city with your receipt! This museum is where the Cafe from the Sound of Music used to be, but the view from the current cafe is still as good. But back to the Schloessl, we loved our three-night stay here, breakfasts were good, service was impeccable both in the dining room and at the front desk. They even did some laundry for our friend. Of course, don't expect all the modern amenities like a TV and super-fast wifi, but normally this place is for church retreats, and we were just glad they allowed four people to stay not affiliated with the church or a retreat. It was a great place to return to after a day in the city. I should mention taxi drivers don't always relish the idea of driving up here, but we never had a problem convincing somebody to take us. The cost spread four ways was more...

Read moreWe enjoyed 2 delightful days in Johannes Schlossl. I had booked thinking it was merely a castle converted to a hotel. It is a beautiful place run by a Catholic religious community, and it feels like it - in a good way. The rooms are simple, but beautiful. (Book this place for beauty and serenity, not for luxury.) Our room had 14 foot ceilings and overlooked the courtyard planted with flowers. The location is amazing. Situated on the top of Monchsberg, it is a short walk (400m) to the Modern Art Museum (and connected elevator to the Aldstadt for 3 Euros). There are walking paths, too, that connect Johannes Schossl to the city. But it is insulated enough to feel like it is in a country estate. As a runner, I relished the trails on Monchsberg. It is a green oasis in a historic city, nestled in the foot of the Alps with beautiful vistas of the city and mountains. Highly recommended for those who love to walk and want the mix of a serene location in a...
