Buenos Aires Polo Club is a member of the Black Sheep restaurant group and an interesting place to eat in the Lan Kwai Fung area of Central District. What you get here is an Argentine steakhouse with a sporty polo theme. They have separate lunch and dinner serving periods and are worth making reservations in advance, particularly if you are dining on weekends.
We reserved for an early dinner on Saturday night. It was quite busy when we arrived and remained full up throughout our meal. Atmosphere is classier than a sports bar but less refined than a traditional steakhouse. It successfully achieves a relaxed middle ground between the two, making this a good venue for a relatively nice date night but also a place for group of friends to gather for special occasions.
Prior to our meal we had a round of well made cocktails at the front bar. They mixed up a rather good rye based Old Fashioned, not on the drink list but something they were happy to serve. We also had a signature cocktail that reminded of a pisco sour that was pretty good as well.
During our meal, we found all foods served to be pretty good. We started with the provoleta, an Argentine style grilled provolone served with a bit of grilled bread. The provolone tasted good and was a fun way to start the meal. More impressive however was the chicken empanada. This was perfectly fried with delicious filling. Would happily order one or two more empanadas when we eat here again.
For mains, we tried their signature bone-in sirloin that was perfectly grilled at medium rare. The steak had the right amount of char, was soft and tender with flavourful juicy bites. This was a quality sirloin, good for those who enjoy this particular steak and promising for those interested in trying their higher grade and more tender cuts.
As a side note, waitstaff bring out a box of knives for which you can choose prior to steaks being served. This is a nice touch at Buenos Aires Polo Club.
Sides ordered were the mash potatoes and spinach. The spinach was creamy with hints of garlic and topped with grana padano cheese shavings. The mash potatoes made with mascarpone giving it a smooth texture and delicious flavour. Both sides complemented the steak very nicely.
For dessert we shared the Don Alfajores, an Argentine style dulce de leche served with vanilla gelato and chocolate sauce. This was good but we might go for something different such as the grilled pineapple next time around.
Overall, this was a nice first meal for us at Buenos Aires Polo Club. It is a good addition to the Black Sheep collection and a pretty good steakhouse option in the...
Read more(Later edit: A restaurant representative contacted me about this review, with a special offer if we visit again. Because we live in NT, it's kind of a big trip to get a meal on the Island, and we're more likely to try a new place or a long-term favorite each time. But the fact that they responded this way even for a 4-star review shows that they really care about customer experience. So I think they will keep getting better and better.) Decent, but not as good as I expected.
Reading the reviews, you will notice that although this is a steakhouse, most reviewers are raving about the sides rather than the steaks. This is an accurate reflection of our experience as well.
I really hoped my steak-fanatic partner would love the ribeye, as this meal was meant to be a treat for him after a stressful week. He said the steak was kind of tough but the sauces were good. I could tell he wasn't thrilled with it as he struggled to cut it, but was putting on a happier face so I wouldn't feel bad for bringing him to this restaurant.
That said, the spinach & provolone empanada was fantastic, and the golf salad had perfect avocados and hearts of palm - rare in Hong Kong. The mac & cheese was also quite good.
The brown butter gave the mashed potatoes a nice flavor, but they were slightly grainy - like maybe the potatoes hadn't quite been boiled long enough?
The servers were indeed all very nice, but service was slow and had a few missteps. Our server brought us an Americano instead of a latte, and a 12 oz ribeye instead of the 24 oz bone-in ribeye (for which he later apologized sincerely). We just accepted these because we didn't want to wait for replacements.
Very careful in terms of covid safety. Nice large dividers between tables, and they have you fill out a questionnaire and take your temperature first.
The vibe is good. It's a nicely decorated, intimate setting that feels like nighttime any time of day. I wouldn't recommend it for steak, but it seems like it'd be a great place for drinks and snacks with a small group.
Oh, and if BAPC is reading this: please remember to sharpen your knives regularly! Mine was...
Read moreVery disappointed. First of all, The place decoration and the vibe is kinda fancy kinda high class. We went there on the Friday night for a friend’s birthday. However. Some staff are…. I won’t say rude but awkward . They way they treat their customer are Jsut not very professional and doesn’t match the vibe the restaurant trying to pull. When we tried to order drinks , Their responses are weird and they would say something make customer feel pretty uncomfortable.
When I tired order one glass of wine , a Male staff told me I only can order by bottle , not by glass. I was like WHAT!? So I asked another staff, and he siad I actually can , but I can’t order from him, he have to send me a “ sommelier “. Ok fine. Then the sommelier came , when I told him I Jsut want one glass of wine, he said why not a bottle?there are 5 of u, I said : oh I think I am the only one who is drinking wine” , he replies loudly: oh what a shame ! ( like a dramatic way , tried to be funny) but all of us feel terrible, it feels like it’s a crime not to ordering wine . However , some of my friends they are Jsut not in a very healthy condition or they allergic to alcohol. We feel like we don’t need to explain ourself to a restaurant staff why we are not drinking.
Another example , when we asked for a fork, cuz the last waitress she took away my friend’s fork while she is preseting the table for the steak. ( it was Jsut a mistake). So I asked another staff to give me a fork, and he brought me TWO forks. I asked : Why you give me two, I only need one… he replies : “ oh , jsut in case !!”
Yea … that’s not a high class restaurant to me …and it doent make any sense .
Anyways , the food doe not taste that good. The steak is nice but Just need some improvement on their presentation.
Shrimp cocktail cost around 240-250hkd , and taste just plain.
Potato chips and other things was fine .
I won’t come back again, and I think it is such a big waste since the space and the decoration are better than the food...
