Hotel & Residence Royal Standard — Hotel in Prague

I booked in this hotel through Expedia which confirmed my booking. When I reached the hotel, the receptionist said that my booking was cancelled because they couldn't cash the amount from my credit card. She said they emailed me, which was not true and Expedia was still showing my booking. Gladly, she agreed to give me a room and I payed with the same card she claimed it was not working with no issues. Don't be fooled, the hotel is right on the river, but the room I was given has no river view, but an awful view to an ugly old building behind the hotel. The hotel has 5 floors but the elevator is between the floors so you would still have to climb the stairs, somethings which is not so pleasant if you have 23 kg luggage. The room is old, but seems clean from the first sight. When I attempted to open the window, I realized that dust (3 mm think) was covering the wall where I placed my hand under the window. My mom went down to ask for tea, the receptionist pointed out to her from which room to get it and how to fill hot water and from where to get the tray, so mom thought that since she got her own tea it would be free, the lady asked 17 czk for it. We went for our tour on this day and reached the hotel at 23:05. The hotel door was locked and all lights turned off. We were really scared and thought that we will spend our night on the road. Gladly, we knocked on the next door building and a young man was kind enough to let us in from another gate to the hotel. I have never experienced such a thing in my life. I travel a lot and have stayed in lots of hotels but never like this one. In the morning, gladly, we did not have the chance to have our complementary breakfast because we had a train to catch at 7:30 am and breakfast starts at 8:00 am (something which i don't mind, although I have experienced some kindness in some hotels of offering you a breakfast box). We came down at 7:00 am to check out and leave, the reception door was locked from the inside. We were locked in. We could here someone from the inside working, but they wouldn't answer us or open the door for us to leave. After 10 minutes of knocking, finally the lady came and opened the door. She said, we do not open until 8:00 am and that we could have used another door to leave. She never told us about this other door before and we needed to check out and submit the keys so this was not possible. In summary, the service is bad, the hotel policies are weird ( they will lock you in or out) and the hotel itself is old, with old furniture and rooms with ugly view. I have stayed in Prague before in a way better hotel (new furniture, professional staff, 24/24 service, cleanness) and good access to attractions for the same price. They should remove the word "Hotel" from the name...

I know this is a budget hotel so I knew what we were getting into, and for a large part it was fine as somewhere to sleep for the night and have breakfast. But there are a few things which could be improved to make the world of difference;||||- Towels too rough; they’re like sandpaper and feel very overused. Not expecting new towels each day or anything but they’re very coarse and unpleasant to use||||- Lots of dust and cobwebs; there was a fine layer of dust on the shelves and surfaces and cobwebs on the light fixture ||||- Air conditioning doesn’t work; we did open the window but as it was noisy at night we would have liked the option to have air conditioning ||||- Flimsy toilet lid; it comes away from the seat at the merest touch so we had to keep taking it off||||- Mirror in the main room, or a plug socket in the hallway by the other mirror. It would make it easier to dry or straighten hair (admittedly there is a hair dryer in the bathroom but I was unable to use straighteners)||||- Ensure consistent shower temperature; the shower never seemed to stay at the temperature you wanted it to, and so several times we would have to adjust it||||Other than that most things were ok. The pillows were soft and the beds comfortable, and most of the time the building was very quiet and peaceful. The breakfast is ok, again it’s a budget hotel so don’t expect anything lavish, but they have a nice selection of breads, cereal and some ham and cheese. Not much fresh fruit and the juice is more like fruit squash, but it was enough choice for us.||||Most of the staff are friendly, particularly the reception staff. A couple of them seemed to find it difficult to return a smile but in general nobody was overtly rude or unfriendly. ||||In terms of location, this place is a bit out of the way. It’s about half an hour’s walk from the main hub, i.e Charles Bridge area. And about 45 minutes walk from the castle. But there are tram stops outside the hotel so it’s easy to get anywhere. There’s also a farmers market across the road along the river which is nice to explore...

"Royal Standard" is a nice small place to stay in Prague. This hotel has easy access to Karlovo Namesti metro station, tram stops, some groceries and the Vysehrad historic complex. I would call the location ideal for those who travel by public transport.||||I think this hotel used to be a pension of some sort, old and simple, but it does provide comfort to its visitors. I stayed 2 nights at 5th floor. Windows can be opened for air, they are not facing the street, and no noise comes in.||||There is an elevator, but also few extra steps between floors, so beware those of you with heavy bags. ||It is tricky to get in and out the hotel as there is a main door and a reception door. Reception is closed at 23 hrs so use the key card on the main door. It is wise to check if it works properly in advance. There are other people living in the building that might help with that too.||||The service was excellent. Very friendly. I asked for hot water and was given some, with a cup that I returned in the morning. In general, the stay was very pleasant.||||Breakfast (8 am) was fine, including toast, cheese, yoghurt, veggies and cold and hot drinks. There are some restaurants nearby, some of them vegetarian, also quiet places in Vysehrad.|||| I would recommend this place to those who have average expectations, and travel mostly...
