Strasbourg is a lovely city, and staying at this Auberge casted a very sour shadow. I dealt with unnecessary stress, additional expenses, very rude and culturally offensive communication by management - in addition to the subpar conditions of the building. Below are details which I hope helps with your decision.
The staff threw away personal items without permission, and refuse to take any accountability. I left a bag of groceries and personal kitchen supplies in the shared refrigerator when I arrived, but it was gone the next day. Management admitted to throwing away my items, but did not offer any resolution, despite repeated attempts to get the items back or receive compensation for them. The explanation provided for why, that my food "smelled", is ridiculous and inadequate. When I explained that the smell was from a small amount of kimchi, the manager made inappropriate, culturally offensive remarks instead of addressing the issue. The auberge lacks any signage indicating food will be thrown out or a labeling system to help staff know which items should be discarded (which is common in other guesthouses). I was doing what a normal guest of a guesthouse does - which is to use the fridge. The fact that management admitted to throwing away my items, then deflect blame to me and refuse to compensate, is unprofessional, disrespectful, and makes for a bad stay.
Security at the guesthouse is a significant concern. While the front gate facing the street locks, no other entrance and rooms inside the building do. This means that anyone can access any room at any time. On my last night, someone entered my room at 1:30 AM, lingered, then left without saying a word. This was very unsettling. While no harm occurred, the lack of basic security measures made me feel vulnerable and unsafe.
Other issues like cleanliness (I found hair from prior guests on my bed before I covered it up myself with provided sheets), unreliable/nonexistent wifi (ended up needing to book a co-working space), and incredibly high noise levels (from late night dining to 5/6am trash pickup to construction, in addition to any step the guests above and next to you make) also knock down the value. At this price point, that can be overlooked. But management's disrespectful behaviors and attitude is what makes this place memorably...
Read moreAlright, I mostly write reviews on here only if I like something, otherwise I leave it be. This is more of a warning than a complaint. I’m very familiar with budget stays, and rarely splurge. I paid more than €500 to escape after the first night. There’s a nice hotel next door.
The location is superb, there’s a fully equipped kitchen, and thats sorta where the good stuff ends. First off the major security concern - there’s no lock/key for the room or even the apartment you’re staying in. They just give you the code for the building. Of the many hostels I’ve been to, that’s a first.
Secondly, the fast food restaurant on the ground floor have the same owners - and when it’s open the smell seeps through the apartments. It’s not pleasant to smell pizza and kebab when you’re trying to sleep. There’s no reception, so when you get there, you ask the fast food employees for the room and they let you in, without checking your ID.
You’re also not given a duvet to sleep in, just a sheet and a thin polyester blanket. Never seen this except for hostels in tropical countries.
And lastly, the way they berate customers on here should be enough...
Read moreIt was a suck booking experience. I made the reservation from Booking.com. However, the hostel didn't mention that it was a mixed room on the platform. After I finished the reservation, I got the information by email and realized that it was a mixed room. Then, I immediately contacted the hostel for a cancelation and refund, but got rejected. The hostel said it was Booking.com's fault and asked me to argue with Booking.com. However, based on the results of Booking.com's servey, it's the hostel who didn't put the information on the platform at all. Booking.com also helped me to ask for the cancellation and refund, but the hostel still rejected it. I totally do not recommend the hostel. If you want to book it, make 100% sure you would not encounter any problem before, when, and after the stay, or you can foresee how the hostel deals with problems according to my case: no matter whether it is the hostel's fault, it won't give...
