Room: Quite spacious and equipped with necessary furniture (TV, Ironing board, air-con etc). Clean and tidy. Bedding and pillow are soft and comfy. Design: When I stayed there, what grabbed my attention the most is the whole design of the hotel. I could tell who ever renovated the place poured in a lot of effort. The whole building itself feels very vintage style. I absolutely recommend it to those who enjoy this aesthetic. The whole building is also so pretty with all the lights on during the night. Location: Location is in Chulia Street, which is a popular tourist spot, there are many bars around, so it is very convenient if you want to grab something to eat. It gets so lively at night, which is perfect for tourists. Also you can see Komtar from here. I believe there are also hawker centers nearby, if you want to try some local Penang food. Staff: The receptionist is very friendly and approachable, willing to answer questions patiently and able to provide advices on which places to visit in Penang. Facilities: There is a pool at the back of the hotel, which is quite surprising considering how affordable the price is. I have been there during December 2023 and from what I could tell it is still undergoing some renovation. But being a Work-In-Progress doesn't make it less awesome of a place to stay! I just can't wait to revisit this place, once it is fully renovated.

To the Owners: Guests who choose a non-smoking stay should not be forced to inhale secondhand smoke in their sleeping space. As a nonsmoker, it’s incredibly frustrating—and frankly unbearable—to be forced to inhale smoke inside a private capsule every time someone lights up their addiction near the pool or by the doors/walls of the hostel. Smoke seeps into every private hostel capsule and alarmingly wakes up nonsmokers. This environment makes it impossible for those who still have natural smoke alarms to enjoy their stay. It feels as though this hostel caters to people who no longer notice or care about the effects of secondhand smoke. This isn’t just inconsiderate—it’s negligent. If you care about guest well-being, move all smoking to outside the back gate and enforce it. Until then, this hostel is only suitable for those who no longer notice the dangers of smoke—or no longer care. Please consider relocating smoking areas away from the main building—such as outside the back gate—to preserve the comfort and health of all guests. The manager is a smoker. Instead of moving the smoking away from the hostel… new ashtrays next to the hostel walls/doors.

Have stayed at many shared rooms in my years of travel, but this place has to be my favourite so far. Apart from the pretty interior aesthetics, the staff here are some of the friendliest people you will meet in Penang. Special shout-out especially to Peter and Pauline who are more than happy to take care of whatever needs you would have, even if it is just a casual conversation with you while you are sitting along the common corridor. Was also lucky enough to have very friendly roommates, with whom I had a lot of funny and chill times chatting late into the night, despire my short stay there. This hotel has everything which is needed to facilitate a relaxing and wholesome atmosphere to facilitate new friendships and stories to be shared between travellers, before we each move on the our next destination. Will definitely be back again should I find myself travelling solo in Penang in future, and hope to relive similar experiences which make solo travelling and staying shared rooms so fun in the first place, and of course to catch with Peter and Pauline again. God bless the both of them, and all the staff who made the stay so memorable

5 stars, although somewhat reluctantly given a few negative points discussed below.

Negatives

  1. Dorm shower was somewhat dangerous. The temperature constantly changed from lukewarm to scalding hot without even adjusting the temperature gauge. Despite the equipment looking fairly new, I think this should be looked into urgently as people could get burns. Water pressure was also inadequate.
  2. Beds a bit hard (shallow mattress on an already firm surface). Although I woke up with a sore back I was generally able to shake it off fairly quickly.
  3. Staff working hours - I observed one of the receptionists worked a 16 hour day. This is perhaps normal in Malaysia and a cultural difference to Europe where workers are entitled to a greater degree of work/life balance. Maybe the receptionist wants to do it or it's because of a temporary short staffing issue, but it left me in a bad mood (you can make up your own mind).

Pros

  1. Location pretty good, close to restaurants and bus stops etc. Dorm rooms were away from any traffic noise.
  2. Massive lockers provided. I was able to fit in a 85L rucksack and backpack and still had about a third of the locker available. Gave me peace of mind as a solo traveller.
  3. Staff very pleasant. Always smiling and helpful. Free water bottles provided every day (although I would maybe encourage the hotel to invest in a water dispenser to save on plastic bottles).
  4. Great value for money vs competition (although may be an introductory price due to them only...

First experience with capsule hotel bed and dormitory with 3 other lovely female travellers. Fortunately, it was an experience exceeding all expectations!! First WOW - look at all the cultural heritage, beautiful art, antique items and furniture, the Feng Shui Koi pond, water fountain, greenery! OMG- better than visiting a museum- you get to live and experience it!!! Second WOW- looking for street food? Walk around and you see stalls selling the local delish: SATAY, Lok Lok, Char Hor Fun and other stalls. Also, the handicraft stores with Batik and wooden sculptures! Other amenities : open swimming pool, 3 shower room next to it and hair dryer (tip: the water pressure and shower much more satisfying compared to bathtub or shower inside dorm room, and a game/ relax room filled with couch to wind down after a tiring day. and just Final WOW- the receptionist and staffs are helpful and well-informed! Guests were invited to join in the fun and you can see guests lounging in the open, relaxed and chatting with the staffs! Room for improvement: mosquitoes... can't seem to get rid of them ( so be prepared) and the places are considered clean... but not spotless. I hope this culturally rich building can be well maintained, and the places be properly upgraded even more as it succeeds as one of the most valuable hotel experience in...
