26-28/12 room 103||We three middle aged guys from London were touring Yucatan for the third time. We saw this hotel/hostel Combi on Bg dot com (booking the same morning in Playa) and were intrigued. It looked like a good deal off season although not central but it was close to a supermarket. We booked an ensuite room with two doubles beds. ||We arrived at around 14:30 after a twenty minute walk from the bus station. A friendly receptionist checked us in. The decor was bright and relatively minimalist, not what we expected from a hostel.||The receptionist took us to the ground floor room 103 to show how the key worked (the lock had been forced whenever and the whole handle was wobbly).||On entering we found there were no clothes hangers so asked the receptionist for some. He returned very quickly with about a dozen! ||The room was a good size with large wall to wall/floor to ceiling windows with full blackout curtains. A sliding door led to a terrace overlooking a stony courtyard with plant, quite pleasant to sit outside on the string chair with a small matching table. The general theme seems to be black string and rope which seems to be traditional.||32inch LED LG Smart TV with Totalplay 4K stb provides lots of Spanish channels, a few American news and one European Spanish channel. No BBC. Lots of smart channels including Disney, Apple, Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube. Remember to log out after! The streaming occasionally stuttered but no big deal. The erratic and random advertising was more of a problem!||There was an efficient remote controlled A/C unit above the tv. ||There was a long wooden double shelf below the TV which was just enough for some belongings. There was an electric mains double socket in the middle of lower one and other sockets occupied by the stb and tv. A tips basket was at the end but I prefer to stripping the beds, collating the used towels, tying up the rubbish in bags and cleaning the mirrors before leaving the apartment/room. This makes the cleaner's job a bit easier! ||In the centre of the ceiling was a lamp with a collapsible (centrugal?) fan. There were also two overhead ceiling lights controlled from the bed too. However, there were no back or bedside lights on the large headboard.||There were two double beds with sheets and an optional bedspread, plenty of fresh towels, a central built in table with two electric and two usb sockets which were useful for device charging. There were no separate tables on either side which would have been useful as there are not enough surfaces for two or four people to store things. There was a built in shelving unit opposite the toilet which we found too late. Most of our stuff ended up on the floor which was clean but that's not the point.||The beds were firm and comfortable and the nights were quiet as it was off season.||The shower was good, as solid large walk-in space with a glass door separate from sink area so the mirror was not misted up. There was unfortunately a leak into the toilet space so a towel used to soak the water up. An automatic ventilation fan kicks in when someone near so a bit annoying as a bit noisy. ||One USP for this hotel/hostel is the rooftop pool with kitchen a few flights of stairs up (no lift, fair enough). The pool is a 10m long 1.2m deep affair with a view inland above most of the houses and trees. You can hear music from other venues opposite.||The clean pool gets sun most of the day. It needs a clearout and clean on the farside as the gulley is full of cans and dried gunk. Don't look if you are sensitive! Considering you are not allowed to take glass anywhere near the pool (cctv was everywhere at a risk of being thrown out of the hotel completely) the abuse of cans is high. There is a utility room with cans and bottles gathering in it. ||By the pool was a rules list, the no drinking in the pool had obviously been ignored! Other lists of kitchen rules were designed to keep the place clean and tidy although some visitors could have cleaned their utensils and the hobs after use!||Talking of sustainability and recycling:||On the ground floor is an 'organics' bin. I did not check to see if our was being used properly. Under the stairs there were also collections of cans in a clear plastic bag and bottles. On PdC families were collecting discsrded cans of the beach so they are worth money to someone. I suggest they have a plastic bag on each floor with a few cans in just too encourage recycling. I'm not sure if the bottles are ever recycled. There is no deposit on bottles. ||A variety of bins for recycling would have helped although there needs to be a system servicing that. I thought all those tourists' city taxes would cover them! ||The kitchen was fairly well equipped (bring your own lighter/matches for the gas hobs) with pans and utensils (except no soup ladel so use a cup!). There were lots of plastic and china plates and cups. There was a large fridge freezer for food and a smaller fridge for drinks only in the bbq kitchen at the end. ||By the pool were two tables with four chairs each. There was also good WiFi there on a separate hub.||The reception had a water dispenser that dispensed very hot water or chilled water. We used it for the tea on our last morning. It was fine, but not quite boiling for a proper cuppa (more American style).||The cheerful maintenance staff were diligently cleaning everywhere most of the day. ||Overal we had a couple of pleasant nights with cheerful and friendly staff and great facilities.||We recommended it to a couple of young women we...

Unfortunately, my experience at this hotel was terrible. The property looks abandoned and in very poor condition. The common areas were full of dust and had stains on the walls, with a foul smell in the air. The curtains had black mold stains, which is very concerning from a hygiene and health perspective.
I went up to the pool area, and the wooden floor was dirty, with debris and stains. The public areas, such as the kitchen, fridge, and grill, were in a deplorable state: filthy, rusted, with food remnants and soap residue. The grill had leftover food and a lot of rust on the metal parts, making it unsafe and unusable for cooking.
In the room, I found hair on the floor, the TV was broken, and overall, the place looked abandoned and poorly maintained. The experience was so disappointing that I paid for two nights but only stayed less than an hour before deciding to leave, preferring to lose the money and find a better hotel.
I do not recommend this hotel at all, not even to my worst enemy. The online photos do not reflect reality; it seems the place was closed for years and re-opened without proper maintenance. Truly a disappointment.

Read moreThis is difficult because the staff was extremely nice and helpful, but the place itself was not the best. The first night I stayed in a room on the ground floor, at night I realized that the sliding door to the patio didn’t close and it was broken. The next day, I mentioned it to the staff, turns out the other room on the ground floor also has a broken sliding door. The receptionist kindly moved me to a room on the 2nd floor, and helped me with my heavy luggage. However that room didn’t have a working air conditioner, just a fan. The room on the ground floor also had some sort of mould issue because the bed felt moist and the curtains had mould stains on them. Overall, also the other guestea were quite inconsiderate. There was so much shouting and slamming of doors the first night on the ground floor, it was difficult to sleep. And then some people were having video calls using a very loud speaker. Very surprised by the level of people here, and also didn’t get a chance to connect...
