WARNING! I can't prove it but I suspect my credit card might have been 'borrowed' or 'skimmed' at this hotel. I suffered my first ever card fraud 2 days after I left the hotel and country (having, perhaps foolishly, left the particular card hidden in a suitcase in my room for emergencies only, and not used it anywhere while in Amsterdam).

Stayed here April 2019. POSITIVES: very central location, in the heart of the sights and a stone's throw from the central station. Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms and bedding were fairly (although not entirely!) clean, and had a private bathroom with hot water.

NEGATIVES: like many converted former residential properties, the rooms are very very small! If you are on the 3rd floor you will be in a tiny attic room with no window and literally no room to even put your cases down. Access is up extremely steep and winding staircases, quite difficult with cases even for fairly fit people. We had to ask for a move - the rooms on the first floor are (slightly) bigger but you will be troubled by noise from the street and reception at all hours (zero sound insulation). The lighting in the rooms is poor and the furniture is old. The communal areas are grubby and also felt a bit unsafe.

Although the 'price' was OK by central Amsterdam standards (in other words not cheap), the 'value' was poor. I rarely give poor reviews but I can't honestly recommend staying at Dam Hotel. I would recommend booking a 3-star hotel if you can afford it, especially if travelling...

Don’t stay here. It’s irredeemable. I can’t believe there are worse places to stay in Amsterdam but according to Tripadvisor this is only 404 out of 411. ||||The good points - good location for central Amsterdam. Bedding quite clean. Fresh towels. Nice lights on mirror in bathroom and shower ok.||||Bonus: the guy sorting out his drugs in the corridor outside the door didn’t try to come in after us. ||||The bad: Everything else. ||||Air - The rooms don’t have windows to outside the building. I’d never before seen this as a luxury. Our “internal windows” opened into a literal cupboard - zero fresh air - our room was effectively air locked. I asked to change - the guy said none of the rooms have windows to the outside - not sure if true or he couldn’t be arsed. ||||It was warm outside but boiling in the room with no way to control temperature. ||||Service - I’m pretty sure the people who work here hate it. Dutch people are almost all lovely and those who aren’t work here. They just didn’t care about anything. One word answers, no welcome. No help, no concern. ||||I didn’t feel safe there. ||||It’s bargain basement stag venue style accommodation but priced high. ||||We basically tried to only go to our rooms when we were so tired we would fall asleep ||||I have stayed at one worst venue in my life - a £5 a night room above a bar in east Africa which turned into a brothel and gang venue. It did have better air, space, service and amenities than Dam Hotel but risk to...

The best thing about this hotel is its location—just a 2-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, making it super convenient. However, that’s about where the positives end.||When we arrived, there was no one at reception, no bell or buzzer to get anyone’s attention, and we waited 25 minutes before someone finally appeared with no apology, just a casual “I was doing a room inspection.” Not a great first impression.||The room itself was tiny but at least the bedding was clean. The pillows, however, were awful—more like overstuffed sofa cushions. The curtains had cigarette burns all over them, which wasn’t exactly reassuring. I stayed in Room 401 on the top floor, and getting there was a workout in itself. The stairs were extremely steep and narrow, making it a struggle to go up and down.||Cleanliness was another big issue. While the rooms were being cleaned, the hallways were left in a complete mess, with rubbish all over the floors, making it so you had to climb over the trash just to get past. To make matters worse, one cleaner left a hoover plugged in with the wire stretched across the top of the stairs, about 20 inches off the floor—a major trip hazard.||The bathroom was okay, nothing special but functional. Unlike some reviews I read, my room did have a window, and I’ll say the view was probably the best thing about the stay.||Would I stay here again? Absolutely not. For the price, you’d be better off staying in a hostel. This place just isn’t...

Great stay! The location of this hotel is just lovely! Right in the centre of Amsterdam, just 300m from the central station and 1 minute walk to the cozy and crowded Red Light District area. Also just a 5-7 minutes walk to Dam Square. The hotel is located right in front of the well known Grasshopper building (see the images) The staff in the reception was super friendly and very helpful for us during the entire 5 days stay. We had no problems extending our stay with a second room, as the staff was very flexible to offer us new bigger room. The hotel itself is an old building as most other city-centre hotels, so dont expect high quality or fancy rooms. Its a simple design, with small rooms and small beds, yet clean and comfortable overall. Some might think its expensive for this standard, but I would say you pay the price for the central location. There is no elevator here though, so get ready for a walk among narrow stairs with the luggage. This was not a big problem for us though, even if we had big bags with us. The hotel does not offer breakfast but you get a discount in the restaurant just below, which has many dishes and great food. The reception also has vendor machines for coffee, snacks and cigarettes. Bathroom was clean, included shampoo and we had no problems with hot water. All in all, a great place to stay for a few nights or a long weekend in Amsterdam, a lot thanks to the location! I highly recommend this place. Thank you and see you next time :)

There’s a lot to say about the Damrak hotel, if you’re younger and don’t care as much about where you’re staying and just want somewhere cheap but also in the smack bang centre of Amsterdam, great this is for you! And that’s why my partner and I chose this place. However I will say even though we weren’t very fussy on comfort or anything like that, we still do expect the staff members to have basic decency and to not argue and scream and shout towards the later hours of the night ….🤦 And if you don’t want to be woken up to staff members outside your room on a balcony at 4am listening to their phone on full volume and coughing up their lungs I would suggest not coming here! However I must say it was a massive convenience to be so close to Amsterdam central station and to have so many great things around, i.e bars, restaurants, metro station to get around so easily! & fun stuff to do. So honestly you have to decide if it’s worth that risk, room wise it was fine, the beds were okay and the bathroom was fine too and we appreciated having a safe, but it’s a bit of a gamble as to whether you will be able to sleep or not!

Reading the reviews you might think "surely this can't be as bad as they claim" and you'd be right. It's so much worse Rooms are filthy, bed had suspicious stains, heating didn't work, shower was moldy and probably cleaned last when Berlin had a west and east side. Rooms have zero noise reduction and you can hear the other occupants walk up the stairs all night. Staff would sit and smoke outside our window, and they had this huge rat sneaking around the trash cans right outside our room, we named him Remy. Girl at reception was lovely and location is top notch, but we had to check our a day early than planned because i'd rather sleep in the street.
