WARNING! I can't prove it but I suspect my credit card might have been 'borrowed' or 'skimmed' at this hotel. I suffered my first ever card fraud 2 days after I left the hotel and country (having, perhaps foolishly, left the particular card hidden in a suitcase in my room for emergencies only, and not used it anywhere while in Amsterdam).
Stayed here April 2019. POSITIVES: very central location, in the heart of the sights and a stone's throw from the central station. Friendly and helpful staff. Rooms and bedding were fairly (although not entirely!) clean, and had a private bathroom with hot water.
NEGATIVES: like many converted former residential properties, the rooms are very very small! If you are on the 3rd floor you will be in a tiny attic room with no window and literally no room to even put your cases down. Access is up extremely steep and winding staircases, quite difficult with cases even for fairly fit people. We had to ask for a move - the rooms on the first floor are (slightly) bigger but you will be troubled by noise from the street and reception at all hours (zero sound insulation). The lighting in the rooms is poor and the furniture is old. The communal areas are grubby and also felt a bit unsafe.
Although the 'price' was OK by central Amsterdam standards (in other words not cheap), the 'value' was poor. I rarely give poor reviews but I can't honestly recommend staying at Dam Hotel. I would recommend booking a 3-star hotel if you can afford it, especially if travelling...
Read moreDon’t stay here. It’s irredeemable. I can’t believe there are worse places to stay in Amsterdam but according to Tripadvisor this is only 404 out of 411. ||||The good points - good location for central Amsterdam. Bedding quite clean. Fresh towels. Nice lights on mirror in bathroom and shower ok.||||Bonus: the guy sorting out his drugs in the corridor outside the door didn’t try to come in after us. ||||The bad: Everything else. ||||Air - The rooms don’t have windows to outside the building. I’d never before seen this as a luxury. Our “internal windows” opened into a literal cupboard - zero fresh air - our room was effectively air locked. I asked to change - the guy said none of the rooms have windows to the outside - not sure if true or he couldn’t be arsed. ||||It was warm outside but boiling in the room with no way to control temperature. ||||Service - I’m pretty sure the people who work here hate it. Dutch people are almost all lovely and those who aren’t work here. They just didn’t care about anything. One word answers, no welcome. No help, no concern. ||||I didn’t feel safe there. ||||It’s bargain basement stag venue style accommodation but priced high. ||||We basically tried to only go to our rooms when we were so tired we would fall asleep ||||I have stayed at one worst venue in my life - a £5 a night room above a bar in east Africa which turned into a brothel and gang venue. It did have better air, space, service and amenities than Dam Hotel but risk to...
Read moreThe best thing about this hotel is its location—just a 2-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, making it super convenient. However, that’s about where the positives end.||When we arrived, there was no one at reception, no bell or buzzer to get anyone’s attention, and we waited 25 minutes before someone finally appeared with no apology, just a casual “I was doing a room inspection.” Not a great first impression.||The room itself was tiny but at least the bedding was clean. The pillows, however, were awful—more like overstuffed sofa cushions. The curtains had cigarette burns all over them, which wasn’t exactly reassuring. I stayed in Room 401 on the top floor, and getting there was a workout in itself. The stairs were extremely steep and narrow, making it a struggle to go up and down.||Cleanliness was another big issue. While the rooms were being cleaned, the hallways were left in a complete mess, with rubbish all over the floors, making it so you had to climb over the trash just to get past. To make matters worse, one cleaner left a hoover plugged in with the wire stretched across the top of the stairs, about 20 inches off the floor—a major trip hazard.||The bathroom was okay, nothing special but functional. Unlike some reviews I read, my room did have a window, and I’ll say the view was probably the best thing about the stay.||Would I stay here again? Absolutely not. For the price, you’d be better off staying in a hostel. This place just isn’t...
