My mother and I stayed at the Capitol Hill Mansion for a week in late August, in the Elk Thistle Suite. It was a lovely experience. Here were our favourite things about the accommodations: The location is perfect. You are within easy access of all the major Capitol Hill attractions, plus the free shuttle to take you Downtown. The neighbourhood has a friendly feeling, with lots of young people and interesting old houses. The Mansion is in great condition, especially for an old building. You can tell the owners have a lot of love for the place, and they are keeping it in great shape. The breakfasts are good and extremely generous (especially with the delicious fresh fruit). We thought the shakshuka on our last day was outstanding. I also really enjoyed the walnut waffles. They are served in a beautiful, secluded backyard location. Free parking and not hard to find for first-timers in Denver. Staff are friendly and helpful without being overbearing. The suite had the comfiest beds I have ever experienced away from my own home. Seriously, I want to buy a set of those sheets, they were unbelievably cozy. I felt we got a very good price for the quality of service and the size of our suite. It's great that the Elk Thistle suite has some cooking and food storage facilities, as it meant didn't need to eat out every day. The suite also has a nice living room where it is pleasant to spend time. We liked that there were books and DVDs that could be borrowed during our stay. Communication was very good ahead of the visit.
While the stay was very nice, there were a few things that make this a four-star review instead of five stars: Our kitchen and washroom had many tiny ants at all times of day. Not sure if this is just something seasonal in Denver that can't be avoided, and we weren't super bothered, as we are used to old houses. But it would have been nice to see some traps out at least. For the first 2 days we were there, it was difficult to communicate with staff outside of breakfast, which was a problem because we had an issue with our door lock. The problem was eventually resolved, but we had to ask about it 2-3 times before one of the cleaning staff who happened to be on our floor showed us how to work the door properly. We did not see anyone at reception and we couldn't reach staff by the phone number provided there. Once Carl returned from travels on the weekend, communication was not a problem--he is very responsive by phone and email. There were utensils missing that made it a bit difficult to cook. In particular, we could have used a sharp knife (even just a paring knife) to prepare vegetables. We found it a little odd that there was a real stove and oven and pots and pans, but not many utensils.
Lastly, I don't consider this a negative per se because I think it's just a personal preference, but I sometimes would have liked a lighter breakfast option, like just a bowl of oatmeal or some buttered toast. Like I said above, the breakfasts were delicious, but they were also very heavy (always with bacon, and usually with a pastry besides the hearty cooked egg or pancake dish). I wasn't sure whether to even mention this because again, it's a personal preference, and the folks at the Mansion are so obliging I suspect they would have made us a lighter breakfast if we had asked. Again, the breakfasts were very good, it just felt like a lot of bacon and cream to start the day, every day.
TL;DR - fantastic location, reasonable price, beautiful historic building, comfortable room. There were a couple small things, but we would stay there again in a heartbeat (which we hope to do, at some point--we really enjoyed our first-ever stay in Denver and would like to go back someday for a concert...
Read moreThe building was easy to find being on a corner plot and having seen the photos online. |The owner had popped out and left a taped instruction for entrance which worked fine. He arrived shortly after we did and he gave us a great welcome, as did the fire in the turn of the century fireplace!|We booked the Bluebell Suite as this looked to be the biggest room and also had an attached sunroom. We had been travelling through the USA so had tons of luggage. |The bedroom was huge and comfortable. It was furnished with antiques so was not modern. But this was one of the reasons we booked it. Bed was quite springy and bouncy but lovely nights sleep. |Decent sized bathroom and super shower. Miniature bathroom products included. |Small kitchenette area with fridge and kettle. Very excited to see kettle after 2 weeks travelling in coffee machine only rooms! Cuppa tea in bed- just what we needed! |Sunroom was also large and included comfy chairs. This room has its own entrance so we could come and go without going through the main house. |Breakfast was served in the dining room sat with the other guests at the dining table. Very formal but a lovely way to have a chat with other travellers. Cafetiere coffee and juices, fresh fruit and yogurt every day. Then chef prepared a hot breakfast alternating between sweet and savoury. We ate blueberry pancakes, shakshuka. Delicious! |Next to the dining room is the parlour where guests can relax. |Great spot one block from cathedral, and Molly Brown House. Around 15 minute walk to State Capitol. Felt safe walking around the area. |All in all a very...
Read moreStaying at Capitol Mansion B&B is like being welcomed into the heart of Denver. It is within walking distance of the Denver Art Museum. The interior of the iconic building has been lovingly decorated by the owner, Carl. We arrived exhausted after a long flight from London with two sandwiches in hand to serve as dinner. Carl was kind enough to set up a table with plates and invite us to sit by the fire in the living room with a choice of red or white wine. It made the transition so much easier. We enjoyed admiring the gourds on display which were hand painted by his aunt. A full breakfast is served in the dining room which is set as if for a banquet with lovely china. The French toast was thick, light, and fluffy, decadently delicious and not overly sweet. OMG! There was fresh fruit, yogurt and the bacon was cooked perfectly. What a pleasure! Each guest was offered juice, a selection of teas or a full French Press carafe of bold, smooth, deep roasted coffee…so good! Carl’s attention to detail is evident in the love he puts into his breakfast offerings. One could imagine bringing family here for the holidays. Without a doubt it will be decked with traditional tasteful decor. This is our second stay here and we look forward to returning when we...
