Days Inn Downtown Denver – Don’t Make the Mistake I Did. Considering a room at Days Inn Downtown Denver? My story follows, but to save time, here’s all you need to know: DON’T. My son & DIL were about to deliver a baby at HCA St. Luke’s, so I chose the hotel at the top of the hospital’s list & closest to the facility, thinking I’d walk the 7/10 mile easily. I knew the hotel was 3 stars, & read some reviews. Comments said it was clean, rooms newly redone, helpful staff. All of that is true, but looking back, all the positive reviews were by people who’d never posted before. One review read, “It was scary!” I figured it was a troll. I was wrong. Booked a room for 2 nights. When I arrived, the hotel looked pretty grim. Not the best section of town, not a great reception area, but all I needed was a clean room, a bed, WIFI, & a desk where I could work while waiting for baby. Safety hadn’t crossed my mind, but 2 minutes into check-in, a man I thought had come in from the street, but later turned out to be a guest known to the staff, interrupted & demanded the clerk DO SOMETHING about the PEOPLE WHO WERE LOOKING AT HIM THROUGH THE WINDOW. I’ve lived & worked in Philly, & visit adult kids in D.C., Baltimore, & Denver, so the displaced population is familiar. This guy was aggressive, threatening, either on something or suffering from a mental illness. He got more & more animated, accused the clerk of not believing him, yelling that he takes video out of his window all the time & could prove that people were looking in his window & demanding that she do something. The clerk calmly asked him to bring the video so she could look. I was impressed by her, but shook. He left & she continued the check-in, but he came back, acting even more agitated, yelling that she didn’t believe him, that he wasn’t going through hours of video just to make her believe him. It went on & on. By the time he left again, I was wondering why there was no security. I went to my room, which was clean, with new furnishings & flooring, but the external hall to get there was dark, looked dirty, & I felt very exposed. Shaking, I called my husband, who said to cancel the next night’s reservation. I was petrified to go back out, but went downstairs & told the clerk how uncomfortable & unsafe I felt. She said I was a couple of hours after the cutoff, too late to cancel. She also dismissed my concerns, said she’d worked there for 2 years & didn’t feel unsafe. I admired her toughness, but it didn’t make me feel any better. I felt stuck & afraid. Yelling, either from the street or from another room, didn’t help. I turned on the TV, skipped eating because I didn’t want to encounter the man or anyone else, & slept with the lights on. The next day, I asked them to reconsider a refund for the 2nd night because I wasn’t staying, then checked out & went to another hotel a few blocks away. It felt like a different world. I got a letter from the owner citing new security & how they’d never had an incident. Said if I could prove something had happened there in the past 5 years, they’d refund for the night I didn’t stay, but otherwise, no. Some of that may be true, but their door, stairs, & elevator to the guest room are NOT monitored – I left in the morning without anybody seeing me, & when I returned, I had to wait for the clerk to emerge from the back. Anyone could’ve walked in, & up. It’s apparent that their guests acting aggressively & erratically is normal, & management thinks it’s fine. Here's the bottom line. This is NOT A HOTEL FOR TOURISTS. It’s a transient hotel in a tough part of town. If you’re coming to Denver to see the sights, visit relatives, etc., this is NOT A PLACE WHERE YOU WILL FEEL SAFE. Management totally disregards concerns about safety. Wyndham should be ashamed of having this property associated with its brand. Don’t make the mistake I did. There are plenty of fine hotels in town that don’t cost a ton of money. Pick...
Read moreI'm writing this because I wish someone had warned me before I booked. Long story short: if you're visiting Denver as a tourist and thinking about the Days Inn Downtown Denver, just don’t. Find somewhere else to stay.|I travel a lot and usually stay in nicer places, but I'm fine with budget hotels too. I picked this spot because my son and daughter-in-law were having a baby at the nearby hospital, and it was on their recommended list. The walking distance seemed perfect.|The hotel itself? The room was actually clean and recently renovated. It was fine. The staff was polite and professional, just like I’d seen mentioned in reviews. But that's where the good stuff ends.|While I was in the middle of checking in, another guest came up and started yelling at the front desk clerk about "people looking through his window." He was more than agitated. He was either having some kind of episode or under the influence of something, and he was really aggressive. The clerk handled it well, but he came back again, even louder and more aggressive the second time. I'm standing there with my luggage thinking, "What did I get myself into, and why isn’t there any security?"|When I asked the clerk about nearby restaurants, she seemed reluctant to recommend anywhere and said DoorDash was a good idea. That should've been another red flag.|My room was on an upper floor, and getting there meant walking down a dimly lit outside hallway that felt sketchy and exposed after my experience. Once I got to my room, I double-locked the door and honestly felt more than shaken up … I was scared. Called my husband, who said I should try to cancel the second night I’d booked.|Went back downstairs to ask about canceling - they said I was too late by a couple of hours. The clerk mentioned she'd worked there two years and felt safe, but that didn't help my nerves one bit. I could hear yelling throughout the evening, couldn't tell if it was from the street or other rooms.|Ended up sleeping with the lights on and skipping dinner because I didn't want to leave the room again. Next morning I checked out early and moved to another downtown hotel just a few blocks away - completely different experience.|I wanted my money back for the second night that I didn’t use because of what had happened, but the hotel said no. Management sent me two letters, listing all the security equipment they’d invested in and female staff that felt safe, saying they'd never had an incident. Maybe that's true, but their entrance and elevator area aren't as monitored as they say they are. I left for breakfast and came back without seeing any staff - anyone could walk right up to the guest floors. Their letters were both super defensive ... this wasn't the first time they'd gotten the same complaint.|Look, I get that this is probably more of a long-term housing situation than a tourist hotel. The location is rough, and what I saw reflected that. If you're coming to Denver to sightsee or visit family, you'll feel out of place and potentially unsafe here.|There are other affordable options downtown that won't leave you sleeping with the lights on. Save yourself the stress that I went through and book...
