I had the pleasure of staying at The Western in Ouray over the weekend in the charming Painted Lady Quarters, and it was truly an unforgettable mountain getaway! From the moment I stepped through the historic doorway, the staff's genuine warmth and hospitality made me feel like a cherished guest rather than just another visitor. Their attention to detail and personalized service went above and beyond my expectations.
What sets The Western apart is their staff's encyclopedic knowledge of the area. They enthusiastically shared hidden gems for self-guided scenic tours, complete with detailed directions and insider tips that you won't find in any guidebook. Their passionate storytelling about Ouray's rich history and local lore transformed my stay from a simple hotel experience into a journey through time in this captivating mountain town.
The crown jewel of my visit was undoubtedly my Swedish massage with Doreen at the Grotto Spa. In this tranquil sanctuary, Doreen's expert touch melted away every ounce of tension. Her intuitive understanding of pressure points and therapeutic techniques, combined with the spa's serene atmosphere, created an absolutely blissful experience that left me floating on cloud nine.
The Painted Lady Quarters exceeded all expectations with its perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort. Every detail, from the period-appropriate decor to the thoughtful amenities, contributed to an atmosphere that was both luxurious and authentically Western.
I cannot recommend The Western enough for anyone seeking a genuine Colorado mountain experience. Whether you're a history buff, outdoor enthusiast, or simply in need of a peaceful retreat, this gem in Ouray delivers on all fronts. The combination of exceptional service, knowledgeable staff, world-class spa treatments, and historic ambiance makes this hotel truly special. I'm already planning my...
Read moreWe stayed at The Western over Memorial Day weekend. If you’re staying in Ouray this spot is a must! We booked a room last minute without realizing it had only been open for a couple weeks. Based on the attentiveness of the staff, beautiful amenities, and sublime restaurant we thought the Western had been running successfully for years.
The ambiance is everything you’d want for an overnight stay in the mountains. The building is an exquisitely renovated wooden structure with lots of cozy fabrics and touches of brass and warm lighting. I’d hoped for a room with a bathtub but the shower in our room was large with great water pressure and a perfect view of the waterfall above Ouray. Bathtub next time!
We started our dinner with expertly built cocktails and the Ute blue corn bread with local honey and butter. To say this cornbread was life changing would be accurate. We had delicious smoked meat sandwiches but the show stopper of the meal was dessert: a cherry goat cheese pie that I will dream about at least twice a week.
A couple things to be aware of: There is no parking lot. We were able to find street parking after circling the building, but there weren’t dedicated spots for hotel guests. The building does not have air conditioning. We stayed on the third floor and the room was quite hot when we arrived. As someone who gets very warm while sleeping, I was worried we wouldn’t sleep well. The staff very kindly brought a large fan for us and covered a round of drinks to cool us down. Between the fan, opened windows, and cool night temperatures in the mountains we were comfortable all night.

Read moreWe stayed here for two nights, and booked one of the balcony rooms rm 204. The views are incredible. What they have done to this beautiful historic hotel is remarkable. It is very trendy, modern with the rustic charm from its original Era. Every staff member from the front desk clerks, bartender, waitress and even house keeping were very friendly and hospitable. Each went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable. We loved the decor of the room and all the furnishings. Bed and linens we top notch. We slept very well. The clawfoot tub was used both nights by my wife. There is no air conditioning and the sun beams thru the windows most of the day, and was pretty warm. All we did was lower the shades cracked windows and open the balcony door and the nice mountain air cooled it down just nice. We had a cocktail at the bar and dinner in the romantic dining room. The Juniper Roasted Duck and Blue Cornbread was delicious. The town is small so you can walk anywhere. The room has a small fridge and toaster oven. Just up the street is a small grocery store if you need anything. The Yankee Girl is a must for breakfast. One important thing to note... this hotel is not idea for the elderly or handicap. There is not an elevator. There are three floors accessible by stairs only. The only negative for us and not that big of a deal, is that the pillows which were nice were just a little thick which was tough on the neck. I highly recommend if you are stopping in Ouray to stay here. We loved and can't wait to come back during the summer time. They do put AC units in the windows during the...
