We are West Slope locals and were so excited to try this place for the first time. When booking, the description said “may be icy in the winter”. We come to Ouray constantly in the winter and there literally isn’t a spot that isn’t icy. This description did not scare us.
Arrived to check in about a half hour before the listed check in time. We are avaid travelers and know it never hurts to check if the room is ready so I went on in to see if a slightly early check in was possible. I asked. “You’re cute” was her reply followed by “there are so many reasons I can’t check you in early” as she listed reasons meant to make me feel dumb for asking this common question. Like I had never traveled before. We twiddled our thumbs for half an hour until she was finally willing to hand us the old traditional key (which would have easily worked a half hour ago). She then described that our cabin was halfway up the hill behind us. We went outside and looked and saw that the driveway was not plowed after the last snow. She told us to take a run at it with our minivan. We made it about 10 feet off the road before our van slid and stopped. Too steep. Too much snow. Too much ice under the snow. Not plowed. Not sanded. Again. We are Colorado natives. Snow driving is common for us. Winter trips to Ouray are a multiple times a year thing for us. This cabin has no winter access. Why was it booked to us? There was no parking at the base of the hill so we had to make our own spot and hope we didn’t get in trouble with the city. We then had to haul our luggage and food and everything up the steep hill in the snow which had layers of ice under it. We Arrive finally at the cabin. Quaint and rustic with a fantastic view. We had to shovel to get the screen door open, showing us that no one had been in it for a few days. Yet we had to wait a half hour to check in. The cabin was freezing cold. Wall heaters were non working. Only heat was space heaters and the wood stove. Wood was in a tacky, ripped Home Depot box. We started a fire to warm the place and sadly considered that we would have to walk the hill when we went for dinner and again when we wanted to use the hot springs.
To summarize the night, we froze. Heaters blew the breakers. Husband had to wade snow in the dark, in the middle of the night, all around the cabin twice, to seek out the breaker box. We ran out of wood. Had to turn on the cooking oven and open its door to make it through the night.emailed the front desk to let them know the struggles. No response still, weeks later. Talked to the same lady the next morning. She offered us a one hour soak in the private hot spring. While lovely, it does not in the least make up for an expensive and miserable night. We were in shock that that is all they would do for us.
To top it off, I fell twice while walking to the cabin different times. I am not frail and am used to snow. My hip was black and blue and hurting for days.
We are in our 40’s and still very capable. Imagine if we would have been older. It would not have been possible to access the cabin over all the ice.
This place is likely charming, but they really need to only rent rooms that they are willing to heat and plow to. Wish we could have had a good experience and stayed in the main building because we could have really loved this place. The hot...
Read moreLong time guest of the Wies. It's a very quiet and cozy establishment and the vapor cave is really just an awesome feature. The outdoor hot spring fed pool is a great temp and the other guests are usually very nice and respectful. The winter specials are what really make the stay worth it b/c of the $35 discount on rooms and hour soak in the fenced private hot tub (normally $30, and also pretty awesome to escape the other guests). All of the good restaurants remain open through the winter and the Wies is only two blocks from mainstreet.

Sorry for the long wind but I really do enjoy this one of a kind establishment and their facilities and will continue to frequent here for...
Read moreI've stayed here twice with my husband. It likely won't be the last time, it's a wonderful spot.
Cons: -You can hear everyone who is staying nearby from your room. It's a quiet area of town, but your neighbors whispering, the bed creaking, running water in the next room, someone almost silently walking past outside...it's all very audible. It can make for a less private feeling or less romantic stay. I would also feel bad bringing kids here, just because it is a space that it feels somewhat rude to be loud/talkative. This was a problem in both rooms I have stayed in, the walls are just thin I guess. If you sleep with earplugs anyway and don't watch loud tv, this may not be a problem for you.
From what I can tell, the building will not be the most accessible option for folks with mobility issues. Basically everything has at least a couple small stairs or a step up to enter, and the vapor caves are in the basement. Beyond this, the stone walkway is uneven and a slight tripping hazard, just watch your step if you're a klutz or arrive in the dark.
Many Pros: -Cute, thoughtful antique furniture -Nice lobby area with coffee and tea Sweet, casual staff -The massage therapist I saw was phenomenal, 11/10 for the atmosphere and her knowledge and experience -Vapor caves are not to be missed, it's why we returned after our first visit The private Lorelei spring is beautiful Pool is nice, they keep it clean Great location. For me, everything was within a very walkable distance Lovely courtyard garden area with wildlife visitors The views in the area are spectacular in general, but I love being across from the picturesque St. Daniels Church. Wifi was consistent and I was able to get some work done and...
