We had a really great time in Hermann overall and the Champagne room was really lovely. However, the lighting in the room is godawful. If it's getting dark out and you have every single light on, reading is painful. They have yellow low-watt bulbs in their fixtures, there's absolutely zero central lighting (all perimeter lamps, nothing overhead in the main room), and even though the lamps are 3-way capable, the bulbs are not. I tried, I swear. I did everything I could to bring light into the room and I simply couldn't succeed. The way it's laid out doesn't help either. My wife didn't have a bedside lamp because there's nowhere to put one. Her nightstand was a short little piece that held her phone and our packs of cards.||There's also a lack of outlets by the bed. There's one behind the bed on the left (stage right) side, but I am short and my wingspan isn't long enough to get to it (my head couldn't squeeze between leg and wall to reach).||The room was otherwise very lovely, the bathroom is huge and well-lit. We did keep having issues with the water temperature in the shower though. The nozzle does not work as the C and H print suggests it should (had to keep it at 9 or 10 o'clock which is technically the cold side, 12 o'clock would be cold, 1 and 2 would be a coin toss). The bathtub is absolutely lovely, though. You should bring bubble bath or bath bombs (the body wash provided does not bubble enough to be used as bubble bath - I tried).||On to breakfast! They change it up daily, but it's mostly the same thing prepared differently each day. Which is fine! I am a habitual breakfast-eater and love eggs, potatoes, and (turkey/chicken) breakfast meats. However, after booking, my wife got a call from the Inn asking about dietary restrictions. She told them that I don't eat "normal" meats, only poultry and fish. The Inn person (not sure who exactly) offered to try to get chicken sausage or something for my breakfasts. That sounded so kind and lovely, I was thrilled! At our first breakfast, I asked about the chicken sausage and our server (Eric, he's lovely and very good) asked the kitchen. The kitchen said they weren't informed and hadn't ordered it. I was decently disappointed honestly. Why bother asking us about dietary restrictions pre-stay if you're not going to let the kitchen know?||The last complaint, and I swear it's the last one, is that our key cards were deactivated twice. This probably would have been a blip if we had been in the actual Inn building, but we weren't. We were on a very high hill in one of the houses. We would drive all the way up the hill, get to the door, and we'd be locked out. The first time, we drove back down to the Inn and got new cards. The woman (didn't catch her name) said that the person who made the cards may have activated them for the wrong amount of days. Ok, no problem, thanks for the new cards, and we went back up. Everything was fine until literally our last day. We went to breakfast at 8:45 and got back up the hill by 9:30 (this was the longest breakfast service we'd had but that's not the point). Key card didn't work again. The housekeeping van was parked at the next house up, so we were able to have them let us in. They said "The cards can be deactivated if they've been in contact with your phone" which we were told at check-in and my wife kept them in her wallet in a different pocket for that purpose. I'm 99% certain our cards were not created for the correct amount of days, again.||We had a longish stay. I'm not sure how often they get Sun-Thur guests, but they just seemed a bit ill-prepared (breakfast, key cards). I stand by my 4 out of 5, though. All of my complaints can't beat the view of Hermann we had from our deck or the comfort of our bed. They don't outweigh the beautiful bathroom or the free tastings we were gifted with our stay. And they really mean very little when it comes to the quality of our breakfasts - the food was very good and, again, Eric was just so lovely and thoughtful. I would recommend staying here, maybe on a normal...
Read moreWe stayed in the braums cottage and overall it was a great experience. We received a bottle of wine upon arrival in the mini fridge and the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The shower was nice, with body sprays and there is a large soaking tub. It doesn't have jets if that's something you're expecting, we were not. There is a Keurig coffee machine but the k-cups provided were everything but regular coffee (decaf, tea, hot chocolate) . It would have been nice to have coffee in the room. Next time I will just bring my own. Having the Keurig is a nice feature though. The room is bottom unit with walk out double doors to the outside patio. I never heard footsteps above us, which would usually drive me crazy, so I'm happy it wasn't a problem. You would think being an old cottage, you would hear creaking floors, but you don't. The patio is nice. It appears some shrubs existed that provided some privacy but they had been chopped down. I think having something there would be nice. I would suggest a fountain (like in the other courtyard) and more landscaping to make that space over the top, it had a lot of potential. The views are awesome overlooking the town, river and vineyard. I was not impressed by the breakfast. It wasn't bad, just average. The first morning it was a buffet style, typical bacon, eggs and a chicken fried steak with gravy, but they served you as you walked by. This was cumbersome and they would walk back into the kitchen leaving the buffet unmanned so you had to wait for them to come back. Again, just really awkward. It would have been better to just serve myself. The second morning, they prepared the plate of food and brought it out to you like in a restaurant. That was fine. It was an egg casserole. Overall the food was fine. I would not go out of my way to come back for the breakfast. We actually almost just left the second morning without but figured we should give it a second chance. The train was never an issue. They provided ear plugs but we didn't need them. One last suggestion, it would be nice to have an actual pathway from the cottages to the hotel where breakfast is served. We ended up driving, but I think we could have made our way through the winery, but it wasn't clear. Overall, a good experience. I would...
Read moreWe recently stayed in the Vienna suite located in the inn. Overall, We had a nice stay, but there's definitely some big room for some improvement.
The woman who first booked us was so nice and helpful. When we arrived, there was another young lady who was checking us in and she did not give me any suggestions nor was she very friendly. She wasn't rude, just indifferent. The inn is in a good location within walking distance of several wineries and restaurants.
The room was nice, but it was well worn. The cushion seats in the chairs need to be replaced as they are very dented in. The bed had a very comfortable sheet set and topper, but it still could not hide the deep body impressions on the mattress. The marble around the tub was cracked and missing in spots, and the jets did not seem to work properly. The seven shower heads in the shower were amazing. It was the best shower I have ever had. The shower experience will definitely have me rebooking in the future.
My complaint would be with the breakfast. You are literally given starvation rations. No exaggeration-Llterally the equivalent of one scrambled egg, one piece of bacon, and three bites of a french toast concoction, and a tiny "parfait" with literally three bites. There is only one or two girls trying to serve the entire room, which is obviously difficult. I did not mind being patient. The first night stay breakfast we were waited on by a nice woman, but the 2nd day was a younger girl who clearly did not want to be there and made me feel uncomfortable and afraid to ask for anything. Both days we left very unsatisfied and still hungry, and for the price of the room you should get a moderate breakfast. My husband is a smaller eater than I, and even he was left hungry. Also, many doors are unlocked and I worried about safety. My husband did hear the trains at night across the street, but I did not.
No place is a hundred percent perfect. I think different guests have different experiences depending on the working order of their hot tubs and showers. We enjoyed our stay enough to come back, but they have got to work on updating the broken in mattresses, seat cushions, and giving people a decent amount of food...
