Better-than-expected food from a local brewery in the winery town of Hermann. After a hot day shopping and winery hopping, we were hungry! There were a lot of people in town doing the same things, and we didn't have time to wait 2 hours for a table because we needed to catch the train before 8. The Tin Mill, after telling our party of 6 we'd have a 25-minute wait, ended up seating us within 5 minutes because they had a group leave. Lucky us! Having looked at their online menu, I wasn't expecting there to be much more than burgers and brats, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a different dinner menu--and schnitzel was on the menu! A good German girl myself, I've had excellent schnitzel at one of my favorite local hangs (see my Iron Barley's High Hog Ridge review). It didn't disappoint. It was lightly breaded, thin, and with the dill sauce it was served with, delicious in flavor. The menu had it being served with German potato salad, but I'm not a fan of warm, vinegary potatoes (which is what that dish is), so I substituted mashed potatoes. Not great (they needed salt), but it wasn't what was supposed to be with the dish, and the schnitzel and pickled red cabbage gave me plenty to make me full.
Others at my table got burgers (perfectly cooked to order as one ordered it medium and was served a pink burger and one ordered well done and got it well done), seafood platter, prime rib (she said it was the best prime rib she'd ever had!), and chicken. I stole a French fry from my daughter and they were soo good--crispy, not greasy, and perfectly seasoned. Everyone was happy with their food. And our waitress, who not only was serving us and other tables in this side room we were in for larger groups, I also saw serving tables on the other side of the restaurant, was very good for how busy she was. When she wasn't sure about who had substituted something different (me, being a total Sally), came to confirm what it was before waiting for possibly the wrong thing being served. And when we hadn't had our teas refilled in a while (again, she was busy), she brought us a carafe of it so we wouldn't run out.
So after drinking wine and sangria all day, none of us tried the beer or any other alcoholic beverages. But if beer's your thing, I'm sure that it would be worth a try. If they can turn out good German food, surely they can brew...
Read moreGetting to the point first: the food is greatly disappointing for the cost, to the point of incredulity. I suggest eating at the Wurst Haus across the street, instead.
Starting with the good here: all the employees we encountered were friendly and helpful, and took extra steps to make our visit a pleasant one (thank you to everyone). The building is charming and the outdoor seating was arranged nicely. The "signature burger" was tasty. Things start to slide from here, sadly.
We had the spicy fried pickles as a starter. They were quite good, though by the end the saltiness and greasiness got to be a bit much (a ceramic bowl isn't the best thing to serve fried foods in). As said above, my burger was good - the highlight of all our food, in fact. It came with fries, which were forgettable but served their purpose. At $22 for the plate, it wasn't doing all it could.
My partner got the whiskey BBQ chicken entree. It came with a sweet potato mash (simple but tasty) and brussels sprouts with craisins (the sprouts were well done, but the craisins were an afterthought - grabbed from a bag and plunked amongst the dry sprouts). The chicken was the weakest of all our food, and a big disappointment.
When paying $26 for a whiskey BBQ glazed chicken breast, one should expect more than a skinless/boneless, rubbery, assuredly frozen chunk of meat that was tossed on a grill to get some marks, then smeared with cold sauce just before serving. The price for what is served is, honestly, kind of shameful. The chicken not being a skin-on, bone-in breast that was actually glazed and given the opportunity to develop flavor is inexcusable, really.
For to-go desserts we had the apple strudel and bread pudding, both fairly middling.
I was going to go with two stars, but my partner requested three because she doesn't like to see hardships for workers due to lowered...
Read moreWe went here as part of a girls weekend work retreat. Our boss wanted to give us a one night out good dinner. This looked like the best option in the area. Once we got there, we got seated pretty early for dinner (around 5:30), with a group of 10, in their back party room. There was already another large group back there finishing up their dinner. We got seated and it took probably a good 15 minutes for us to get our drinks ordered. That should have been our first sign. After that, the night just got worse and worse. The service was the worst any of us have ever experienced. On a Saturday night, we didn't order our food until a good 30 minutes after that, didn't receive our food until a good hour and a half in and when it came out it was cold and half wrong. Our waitress never apologized and we had to ask for a different waitress, who was much nicer. We ended up finding out they didn't even have a manager on site that night. After not having a satisfying meal whatsoever, we decided to walk out and not pay, since none of it was right or even good. We told our new waitress and she said it was quite all right and she would let management know what happened and the meal was on the house. As we were almost down the street, a whole different staff member we hadn't had any contact with came out, punching her hand, said they were going to call the cops on us. (HA!) So, then they got the owner on the phone for us to talk to and pay our bill! That was the only time we actually talked to management. We ended up having to pay $300 of our $500 bill, which is still ridiculous in our minds. Bad experience,...
