Summary: Use it as a 1 night sleep stop. I highly recommend NOT staying here longer than 1 night, otherwise, run for your life.
First, pictures are fake, the swimming pool is uglier than in pictures. The building is very old, and it is not like “the hotel was good back in its days”, it might have never been good due to its poor (functional an esthetical) design.
Secondly, I haven’t seen or got bitten by bedbugs, but I strongly believe in other people’s reviews. The building is big and I assume there should be some rooms infested. Same with cockroaches, specially for those rooms in lower flats.
Third, I’ve got suited in a room on the 12th flat. Considering the last point, I thought I had just got lucky… Not really, I mean I was lucky in matter of bugs, but in the other hand, the room was outside the main hallway… I don’t really understand why, but at the end of the hallway, there was a door (like the emergencies one). It connects the hallway to a scary balcony, and then to the room I got (yes, really weird). I think, it was dangerous because of dropping items risk, but it also felt unsafe.
Fourth, considering point 3, the scariest wasn’t the weird balcony/way to my room. In fact, I felt afraid of some of the other guests. I’d say half of the guests were completely normal people, but the rest looked sketchy and were rude, which made us feel awkward and sadly unsafe. To be honest, some of them are clearly druggadicts. I saw one of the guys tasting his coke with no shame at the lobby when waiting for the elevator, and I saw a whole bunch of them noticeably stoned.
Since the hotel location is pretty good and it is cheaper than most of the hotels around, it makes sense that this kind of people choose this hotel. Believe it or not, they handle to be there, don’t know how they get the money, considering how expensive Hawaii is, but they do it.
Fifth, in 3 days staying, I always saw different people at the front desk. Some of them were very nice, others were apathetic and a young woman didn’t have any good manners, not even basics, like saying “thanks”, “you’re welcome”, or “aloha” which everyone in Hawaii says… Cleaning personel seemed nice, responsible and trustable (which is great considering all the last points).
Sixth, the hallway stinks, I would say it’s because the humidity plus lack of ventilation. The room and bathroom were super clean but the wall paint were darkened near the aircon hatch, which it might be because of poor cleaning in the whole building over the years.
Seventh, room’s design is terrible, my bathroom had no sink. There is a “miniktchen” with a kitchen-sink outside the bathroom (yes, makes no sense). Shower is very old, WC is good and new. It seemed the room has budget renovations. Even tough, the whole building needs urgently a major upgrade…
Eighth, location and price are the best, there’s also free purified water, coffee and ice tea at the reception, which is good. There’s also a coffee maker in the room (with refilled capsules every day) and you get a daily free snack at the main desk. By the way I haven’t been charged (yet) with those weird payments that has been said in other reviews.
Finally, I booked this hotel through a travel webpage, because its pictures and reviews were good when booking. We panicked 1 week before arriving because of bedbugs reported in last reviews, but we got lucky we didn’t see any. In general this hotel is a 2 star at its best. I suggest you to spend more money and choose a better hotel (worth it, Hawaii is gonna eat your wallet anyways…), unless the hotel develop several improvements. This includes the building upgrade, staff and filter (it should be a guard or 2 at least). It would also help to upload real pictures… fake pictures feel like a scam.
And no, I didn’t try to contact the manager, just wanted to spend most of the time outside the hotel. I said it before, this hotel, as it is now, is just a 1...
Read moreWe stayed here April 4-13. We stayed on the 14 floor. Room 1481. We had an amazing view from our balcony that looked right over the Royal Hawaiian. Our stay was fine. We were only at the hotel a handful of hours so it worked. It was good for what we paid and location was amazing. The service from the staff was good. Never any issues. Katie from housecleaning was definitely a treat. She left hand written notes daily. Thanking us for being there. When we needed anything she brought it to us right away. She was off for two days and we definitely noticed this as our room was not really cleaned and nothing stocked back up.
Here is my input below.
The hotel. To find it was easy but trying to park. No way. I stayed in the car and drove around while the hubby checked in. Once checked in and card given for parking which is $45 per day. Ouch I know but was worth it. We parked. The parkade is tight. Tight corner to get down in it. We are glad we had a VW car. I did see gladiators and vans down there but it’s very tight. One Friday night we came back and there was not enough parking. The parking was 8 deep down the middle of the garage blocking everyone in. You had to leave your keys at front desk. We then parked at far end furthest from the door and never had a problem after that. It just depends who rents cars.
If you go by what you see for pictures on the internet before you come. You will be disappointed. The hotel has a funny smell in the lobby when you walk in and does not look like pictures. They did have coffee and water till late afternoon for guests. The one thing the hotel did was give you a snack bag each day. This was great ! Had chips, juice, granola bars. But only given between 7 and 10 am. They also gave out beach towels whenever asked for them.
The pool. If you like very cold water this is great. It was very cold. It sits in the shade. We tried but didn’t make it in. lol.
The hotel from our opinion was clean but extremely dated. Needs some help. But you pay for what you get.
The room. Needs help. We had a very small kitchen and bedroom all in one. The kitchen was just a counter with sink, stove, mini fridge, and coffee maker. It comes with plates, bowls and silverware. We asked for a pan and a toaster and they had many other items you could have but there really wasn’t room to make a five course meal. The Bed was comfy and clean. The armoire was kinda falling apart but only used it for the safe that was inside.
The bathroom was very dated and laminate flooring coming apart. The shower itself was very small. It had good pressure and always hot water though. The bathroom had a huge counter and lots of room and a closet to hand your clothes. They did have a hair dryer.
The balcony was a great place to sit and people watch. Only thing I wish it had was a bbq. Our air conditioner worked great.
The location of this hotel was perfect. Across the street was International Market Place with shopping and food. The whole street had many food options. You could walk over two streets and were at the beach. Took about ten minutes but all the things you see on the way were worth it. So much shopping all around. So much to see and do. Definitely was a great spot to be. The noise level was loud however it didn’t bother us. We were so tired from our 12-14 hours a day of adventures that we just slept when we got back. If we had to stay here again we would. In our opinion it was worth what we paid. It was clean and location was great.
Dont mind our last minute...

I booked a stay at the Royal Grove Waikiki Hotel, and upon arrival was told they had lost power to half the hotel and was moved to the sister property which was this hotel, Ohia Waikiki Studio Suites. We checked in late Thursday, May 1st, and were given a key to room 283. Upon entering and inspecting Room 283 we discovered that it was dirty--stained sheets, mold in the shower and on the ceiling, and urine on the toilet seat (pictures below). We informed the front desk, and were moved to Room 285.
While the room appeared clean, there were several other issues we discovered over the course of our stay, including a broken toilet chain that did not allow for proper flushing, dead roach remains under the sink, and no hot water in the shower. These are all issues that, while unacceptable, could be dealt with considering we did not have much choice but to stay since our other hotel was not available, however what is unacceptable in its full extent is the theft that occurred on not one, but two days of our stay.
Apparently when the maids were changing our towels they were also helping themselves to a few of our things. We noticed that $300 in cash was missing from my friend's wallet, and other cash in the wallet had moved pockets (seemingly to take enough to satisfy their urge, but not enough that we would notice), as well as both of our perfume bottles were missing. While this was infuriating, we decided that we would let it go as we had just suffered a massive disappointment with our excursion being canceled, and didn't wish to spend what precious little time we had left fighting with the front desk or filing a police report.
However, I will now be filing a report as well as possibly pursuing legal action against Ohia Waikiki as upon our return home we have discovered an immense amount of things that are missing from our stuff, including things that could only have been taken from the room on Sunday, May 4th--a day that we ABSOLUTELY did NOT put the hanger for maid service for, as we wished to incur no more theft. This means that the maids unlawfully entered the premises, and took a host of other things. The list of missing items that will be reported include:
--a red bottle of cherry scented perfume --a bottle of Sol de Janiero perfume --two gold necklaces, one with black vacation accents and one with teal seashell accents (bought specifically for our birthdays and this trip) --a gold monstera ring I purchased in the North Shore as a gift for my sister's upcoming birthday --a black phone mount for traveling on a plane --$300 cash --a bottle of prescription medication --Stila and Nyx eyeliners --two bottles of Smashbox foundation --Urban Decay lipstick --Le Volume de Chanel mascara --an Instax polaroid camera and replacement film packs --a GoPro Hero 13 and 2x64 gb memory cards
These are all small items that would not be noticed missing, as we chose to not wear makeup to the beach, we had other numerous jewelry items in the same bag, and the electronics were in cases that we didn't feel the need to open once our excursion was finished. They selected these items with care and thoughtfulness, choosing only things that were easily dismissed as likely being already packed or in another container/pocket. This is obviously not the first time this has happened, as it was highly calculated.
This was the icing on an already crap cake of a trip, and we will never return to...
