This was a fun place to visit. All genres of music are represented here from Folk, Jazz, Classical, Gospel, Pop and Rock. There is even a section currently dedicated to Latin Music and Punk Rock.
The best portion of the exhibit is on fourth floor. There is an amazing display of guitars by the National brand, some iconic wardrobe and instruments of iconic blues, rock and jazz musicians including BB King, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane. You can also view a case of iconic wardrobe and props of pop legend Michael Jackson.
There is a wealth of information about songwriters, the 50th Grammy Anniversary, as well as sections dedicated to Latin Music.
There were 2 exhibits for music or musicians I am not a fans of, Katy Perry and Punk Rock. However, the Katy Perry "Frock N Roll" (wardrobe worn at past Grammy shows) was fun and enjoyable. You can see the detail and construction on some of her most outrageous pop culture costumes. I also enjoyed the fashion, art and references to the Punk genre in Los Angeles.
The exhibits change on regular basis. I visited on Free Museum Day in Los Angeles, but would like to return when the exhibits are about rockers I follow, blues musicians and country music legends.
Great place for music lovers!
UPDATE December 2022. I revisited to see Jim Marshall photo exhibit of Rolling Stones 1972. It was tastefully presented with Exile On Main Street album playing to streaming video of photos from the book. I enjoyed it but just expected a larger display.
Most of the exhibits were the same but Punk rock and Katy Perry space has been replaced by Bruce Springsteen and Latin musician Marco Antonio Solis. Another new display that I quite enjoyed was the evolution of recorded music from 1800s to 1980. Across from the display is room with music videos that play a song in each format -- very interesting sound wise!
Additionally the gift shop has been moved to first floor. There are some interesting Los Angeles souvenirs and music books, cards and other items that celebrate musicians from Dolly Parton to AC/DC.
Tickets may be purchased online in advance and are valid for 3 months. You may also purchase tickets in person. The printed guide has been replaced with digital version, you may scan QC Code at front desk.
Parking in Downtown Los Angeles can be problematic but it is available. There is parking garage for Museum ($10 for 3 hours with validation from any restaurant at LA Live). There is metered street parking in area and several parking lots within few blocks, cost varies. Pay attention to the signs!
All staff wore face masks but it was not mandatory for patrons. There were no crowds so we were comfortable without face mask. However COVID protocols are constantly changing so check their website or use the "Contact Us"...
Read moreIt had been around 10 years since the last time I had visited the Grammy Museum and since my sister really wanted to see it for the first time, we paid it a visit.
My sister loves music and musicians and goes into deep dives into all of it.
I, however, enjoy music, but not to the same extent. Even then, I still appreciated being able to see the Grammy awards up close, from all angles, and even see how it has evolved over the years.
For the most part, it looks the same, but details like the crank on the side disappearing completely in the latest versions, to the base changing from plain wood to a shiny lacquered red, makes you realize that it has changed over the years and that each musician has received a different Grammy through the decades, like Beyonce, who has won several over the years, still wouldn't have the exact same looking one.
And even then, there are crystal versions and other versions awarded to educators and such.
It's also cool to see the fancy and elaborate clothes musicians have worn to the ceremony, and samples of their scribbled notes when they were writing the songs.
There's also an educational part where you can try playing the drums or scratching records as a DJ. There's even karaoke booths where you can listen to what you sound like afterwards with effects.
There's one area where you can sit and watch clips of musicians winning the award and the video has a countdown clock showing it's around 30 mins. Since I was already tired of walking around, it was a good excuse to sit down and realize how meaningful and important this award is to each of the artists.
Outside there's a Hollywood Walk of Fame of sorts, but instead of stars, it's a round record with the Grammy emblem in the middle.
We visited the cafe at the roof which we were only able to get to by elevator, but we only saw drinks, so we went back downstairs and outside to have lunch at one of the many restaurants available at L.A. Live.
Overall, it was a fun experience. After all, how often do regular people like us get to be up close...
