Rotisserie chicken has always been my go to meal when am looking to have something convenient and tasty. I first had this when I lived in the Upper West Side in the early 90s. There was a place that's was walking distance from the apartment and it was also open late so it was a delight. I previously reviewed that restaurant and have since moved higher in the UWS, though there are still a few similar places. Pio Pio is one such restaurant, advertised as " An Authentic Peruvian Cuisine Pollo a la Brasca "Rotisserie Chicken" with our famous Aji Verde "Green Sauce". Have only dined there once for dinner and then a few times have taken out. This is actually the first time I am having food delivered so hopefully, the order is still warm enough so it will not require re heating. I ordered their Juanitas Chicken, which as mentioned is rotisserie chicken which is marinated in mama Juanita's authentic recipe. It comes with 2 side sauces of Aji Verde which is a spicy Peruvian sauce made with cilantro, jalapeños, a little mayonnaise and Parmigiano. It is bold and bright, spicy and tangy and packed with fresh flavor. I also got a side dish of Maduros or more popularly known as sweet plantains. They are similar to bananas though have less sugar and similarly, are picked and shipped while green then change color to yellow then black as they ripen. So, I placed the order and the receipt mentioned it would take 43 minutes. Well, barely 20mins have passed and got buzzed that my order had arrived. Both plates were actually still hot. So, how was it? Amazingly delicious. The chicken was cooked just right and very juicy. It was not salty so perfect. The maduros were excellent as well with just a slight hint of sweetness. Rather than just putting it on a plate, decided to make a sandwich out of it, adding tomatoes, black garlic and ground pepper to the mix. It made the sandwich even more yummy. Definitely a great meal on a Friday afternoon. If ever you are in the neighborhood, check out Pio Pio. There are other branches aside from the UWS like Rego Park, Jackson Heights, UES and Brooklyn. Amazing food..

The staff is not attentive at all, very unproffesional. I ordered the Empanadas for an appetizer. I also asked him to suggest other popular items as an appetizer. After doing so, I said I will just stick with the Empanadas. Everyone who did order an appetizer at my table got their's except for me. I addressed it to the waiter. I told him since I didn't get it, so please take it off the bill. He kept insisting that I didn't order the Empanadas. The manager wind up coming over, and asked if everything was okay. He asked is there a problem? Did I want Empanadas. I told him what happened, and he too said don't worry about it being on the check, because I didn't order it. He wasn't there when I ordered it, so how would he know? We were patient, but we also had to ask for the check 4 different times before they brought it over. It wasn't even that busy in there at the time. I don't care much for this location. Even though it's much smaller on 1st Ave, the service is so much better at Pio 3.

The bottom line is that this place offers really good Peruvian food! I went to another Pio Pio in UES that is more casual, and has cheaper prices. This location, which is going for a more fine dining vibe, charges a bit more for that even though you’re getting the same quality food. ($30 for a fish entrée struck me as about right, but spending $16 for a plate with rice and a moderate portion of beans struck me as high, especially since lots of places include at least rice with an entrée.) This place, the only Peruvian spot on the UWS, gets crowded and as a result it gets noisy, so at least for me, it’s not the kind of spot where you would want to linger after finishing your food. But hey, that’s just me. Judging from the crowds, Pio Pio is the go to spot for Peruvian food and deserves its fine reputation.

DO NOT MISS OUT ON THE EMPANADAS. Seriously. The best empanadas I’ve had in NY. Filled to the brim, well-marinated, very crispy exterior and they also added some olives to add taste to the filling. For those who know what (Singapore-style) curry puffs are, these are like the Peruvian version, and better. They offer free delivery through their website (minimum 11.99). The food was delivered much quicker than expected, and the empanadas were still very crispy after delivery. I also tried the chicken. It was good, but not the best I’ve tried. The 1/4 portion is quite small (similar to 1/4 of a spring chicken) so you might want to order 1/2.

Food was good, but the service was ridiculous. We came at 9:45pm and were told that the restaurant closes at 10pm despite the hours on google showing that they are open until 11pm. Were permitted to sit but were rushed to order. More people came in 5 minutes after us and were denied service. Before paying for our check, we asked for a can of coke. The waiter replied that the bar is closed. Really? You need to open a bar to sell a can of coke? This place might have good food but service and management is a complete joke. Good luck! I won’t be back. Word of advice to the owners: log onto your google profile AND CHANGE THE HOURS!
