Typically, Best Westerns have a good to great standard for rooms accommodations, comfortable beds and atmosphere. The Sand Hotel was a disappointment in all regards and I would not recommend staying here.
Issue 1# I booked (4 months in advance) a room with 2 queen beds for myself, husband, and two of our friends for a overnight stay in Sacramento to see a show. The room we were given had a double bed and king size bed (which was awkward), and there were no other options. Issue 2# In addition, we booked here partially because we wanted to be able to use the hot tube, but upon arrival we were told it was closed until next summer, but there was no indication this part of the facility was out of use in any of the confirmation emails. It would have been a nice courtesy to have a notification in the emails to know that the pool and hot tube were out of service, as we would have probably booked somewhere else. Issue 3# The room wasn't terribly clean, the floors were dirty, there were holes in the walls and ceilings (I think from old pictures or hooks... not really sure but they were large). I would have hoped a Best Western would have taken the small amount of time to cover those up. Also, there was a very unwelcoming sign in the room that stated if we stole pillows, towels...etc what we would be charged for each item. Now I understand stealing is a problem for hotels, but it made an incredibly unwelcoming impression. It's written in the agreement about being charged for taking items everyone signs, so why put up a sign? Issue 4# The outdoor atmosphere is terrible here. There are loads of trash around the outside entrance area near check in and there were several transits hanging about. It felt quite sketchy and like you better keep valuables on you at all times. Not pleasant, not welcoming, not ever going back. Issue 5# Bed were incredibly hard and uncomfortable. There was only one extra blanket in the room (with two beds, so not enough to go around). I slept in a sweater and wool pants and still was cold. Issue 6# The shower had no water pressure and only had a hand held shower nozzle, so it was difficult to use. Also, the shower didn't have a proper drain or siding, so water got all over the floor and I had to use several of the hand towels to clean up the mess. Issue 7# The walls are SO thin!! There were people talking in the next room and we could hear almost every word. Plus, they were walking around in highheels late into the night and between the clumping and the talking, it was so loud that they woke me up a few times.
Upon checking out, the receptionist didn't bother to ask how the stay was, but simply took the room keys and said have a nice day, which I guess is the bare minimum one can expect.
Generally, I have found better rooms and service from Best Westerns in the past but apparent standards have greatly dropped and I won't be staying at another Best...

Guest laundry washing machine costs $3, and takes about one hour just for basic 26-minute wash. Water pressure is extremely low as it took at least 30 minutes just to fill with water.
Dryer costs $2 for 99 minutes. No heating apparently. Now I understand why one gets 99 minutes of air drying for only $2
My one load of whites started about 2:45pm. First machine took my money and liquid detergent. After involving hotel maintenance, and three visits to the front desk, I finally got my one load started about 3:20pm. The 26-minute wash cycle took about one hour.
Now I have 22 minutes left on the 99-minute dryer as of 5:55pm. After checking my clothes twice, they are so wet that I will need to lay everything out over my laundry basket to air dry overnight. Spending the better part of the beautiful afternoon doing just one load of laundry. What a huge disappointment for what I expected to be an easy chore.
I’m thinking about spending another $2 for 99 minutes more spinning in the so-called dryer. I’m not even sure there is any air involved at this point. No heat for sure, but perhaps no air for that matter. It’s already 6:12pm so only about ten minutes left on the first attempt to dry. What started as a simple load about 2:45pm has become an obsession to see just how long it takes to wash and dry one load of laundry at Best Western Sandman Inn.
Now I see why I never saw anyone else in the laundry room. Well, it’s 6:20pm so I decided to invest another $2 in this endeavor. Total spend $7 for one load of laundry. This is more than I would have spent at a commercial laundromat. Not to mention all the time spent since 2:45pm. With 99 minutes more as of 6:20pm this is ridiculous.
As of 8pm the laundry nightmare that began about 2:45pm is finally over. Whites appear clean, and unbelievably dry. What a pleasure to fold this one load of whites in preparation to leave this Best Western tomorrow morning. This experience coupled with the pool closure will likely mean I need to look elsewhere for my Sacramento budget accommodations.
When a Diamond member arrives to checkin early about 12:15pm, agent should care enough to try to accommodate. I was simply told that there are three other guests ahead of me. I doubt any of them were Diamond members.
As for the guest laundry, replace or repair all of the washers and dryers. No heat in the working dryers. Barely any water pressure in the washing machine that works. 3 of 5 washers are out of service. 2 of 4 dryers are...
Read moreI just checked in and so far I am definitely not impressed. The heater & air conditioning units in two rooms were not working properly. When brought to the attention of the staff, she basically said it is my fault that they are not functioning properly.
In the first unit, 155, the machine had traditional dials & no noticeable on/off switches not buttons. The dials were extremely loose. When either dial was rotated in any direction, there was no response. There were no noticeable thermostats located on the walls in the room. Also, I made sure to check that the power outlet was inserted into the wall. I brought this to the attention of the staff & inquired if there is a control unit on the wall somewhere. She was not sure & recommended either the security guard could take a look or I can get a new room. I did not take a photo of the dials as I originally thought it would be unnecessary.
The second room, 242, possessed a sign over the dial portion of the heater/AC unit advising that it is "controlled by a thermostat located on the wall." This was accurate & easily located at eye height like most hotel rooms. Unfortunately, this unit also did not work. The display did not function & no light was produced. Almost as if the unit was receiving absolutely no power. Once again, I informed the front desk representative of the non functioning equipment. She then says she can switch my room again. However, it is now against policy for security guards to enter the rooms. Therefore the guard will not be able to take a look. She then said there is no way that the units are not functioning improperly and it must be my error. She does not know what I am doing.
The third room also had a sign like the first saying that there was a control thermostat unit on the wall. This unit functioned display without me even touching it. When I adjusted the temperature according to desire, the heater turned on immediately.
My issue is the poorly functioning heater/ac units of this facility during the winter. Most of all, the inconsistency of the front desk clerk & blaming me for the equipment functionality. She changed her story about the guard being able to come to the room for assistance then claimed it is no...
