Reading the reviews for this place it seemed that the hotel was dated but still a comfortable place to get your head down at the end of a long day of sightseeing. Don't let these reviews fool you. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. ||We booked two of the same room. Double rooms with private bathrooms. My in laws were taken to their room. It was small, smelly, had no windows and a grotty bathroom with broken tiles. Nothing at all like the photos we'd seen when booking. The man who was escorting us to our rooms even said to my partner and I - "I think your room is a lot nicer". When we got to our room we were pleasantly surprised. It was light with a bay window, had a huge tv, microwave, fridge, coffee machine and seemed clean enough, just like the images seen on their website. We were very confused. We had paid the same price for two entirely different rooms. My in laws asked to be moved to a different room and they we're simply told no and that they would have to make do with what they were given. My partner and I we're just "lucky" as the room we had was a residential room and the previous resident just happened to have left before we arrived. They should not be able to advertise this room as it is not usually bookable as a hotel room. However if you check the hotels website, all of the room images are of the residential rooms just like ours. Images of the room my in laws stayed in could not be found on the site. We were told that the ONLY room they had with a window and a private bathroom was ours. They are falsely advertising these spaces as one of their bookable rooms and this needs to be addressed. ||I must have looked horrified as I was walking down the hall because a staff member said "it's because it's an old building". We're from the UK. There are hotels hundreds and hundreds of years old there that are 5 star and very high class. This is not an excuse for poor renovation. The "old building" comment may work on some people but definitely not with us. The building isn't that old. It's just poorly kept, unclean and downright disgusting. ||As we started to settle in to our "nicer" room, issues started to become more apparent. The windows were single glazed and the busy street noise even drowned out the sound from the tv. There were no curtains, just the blinds. These let in so much light. The bed was hard. We got one flat pillow each. These served no purpose at all. We both slept with the pillows folded in half just so we could have some kind of neck support. Between the light and noise pollution and the hard bed we may as well have been sleeping on the street. ||I got in the shower that evening to wash my hair. There was an old shower gel bottle in there from the residents before and loads of hair in the bath. I was in the shower around 10 minutes before I noticed that the water was pooling around my feet, it just wouldn't go down the drain. The water was a faint brown/grey colour. I had recently died my hair and I prayed that the colour was due to excess hair dye. I rinsed my hair as quickly as possible and got out. The water did finally run away as I got out of the shower. ||We went out at 7.30am the next morning and returned to our room at around 9:30pm. Our towels hadn't been changed, our bed hadn't been made and our bath was an inch deep in murky water. It was disgusting. We went downstairs - nobody at reception. We knocked on the owners room - no answer. My in laws finally ran into a staff member and he knocked on our door and called "When do you want the bath fixing?". I don't know what answer he was expecting. A week next Thursday? We told him it needed doing ASAP so he called a plumber. The plumber fixed the problem but left our bathroom floor and the toilet seat covered in slightly discolored water and the bath with an awful black smear around it. ||At this point we were ready to leave. When my in laws complained they we're told that they would have nowhere to go unless we wanted to pay over $600 to stay at another hotel. After a quick Google search we found that this definitely was not the case. They were then offered another room for the last night for our stay. ||Myself and my partner were pulled over by a member of staff the day before we left when walking down the hallway. I must say, this staff member was lovely. However we had never met him before and he asked my partner when his parents would be moving rooms. It had to be before 3pm as that was when the maid left - I didn't believe this, I doubt this place has a maid. My main issue with this conversation was how he knew who me and my partner were and how he knew we were related to the couple moving rooms. We had never seen this man before. We didn't even know he was a staff member until he spoke to us. Then I started to notice the amount of cameras around the hotel. I'm all for security but there were 3 in the lobby alone, one facing the door to our room and 1 or 2 down every corridor. I couldn't help but think we we're being watched and talked about amongst staff. ||When we discussed the room change we realised that the room they would be getting was identical to the one they complained about and moving away from, just two floors higher. There was no point in inconveniencing them with the move when there would be no improvement. ||That morning I raised the blinds to see what was causing a loud banging outside. As we had the blinds closed for our whole stay we hadn't noticed that there was a huge crack in the window - a massive safety risk. The glass was protruding and I hurt myself when trying to raise the blinds. This was the final straw. We left the hotel without staying for our final night. It ruined our holiday and ruined our experience of the beautiful city that is San Francisco. ||At the end of the day we booked these rooms because we needed a half decent night's sleep and a place to refresh ourselves. We barely got an hours sleep over the two nights we stayed because of the noise and light pollution and after the foul mishap with the shower when I was washing my hair we worried about using it. The second morning we didn't even brush our teeth as we've seen what can come out of the taps there. Our basic needs we're not met. Nobody asked for 5 star luxury but being able to sleep and shower are two necessities that the Cable Car hotel...
Read moreEverything apart of the room itself was a big disappointment and terrible experience! How can Booking recommend this place and give false information ? Did they ever check it ? This is NOT a real hotel, those are a few rooms allocated to guests, the rest is for what they call " residents" an obligation made to the ( sorry and helpless) owner by the municipality to give rooms to people in need. Some of them grow weed in their rooms and though guests are given NS rooms, the residents are allowed to smoke in theirs, weed especially which suffocate all the floors. The smell is unbearable : a mix of pot and chloride. The place is worn out even if re-painted and the shared bathrooms so old and gloomy I never had had so quick showers. Not to talk about the toilets. I feel sorry for the lady cleaner who has to do this job and really tries her best. My first impression was quite terrible, what a weird dark and gloomy place! Norman Bates could have run it...I was given room 208, worn out and tiny but worse than anything, though I mentioned I was asthmatic , when my grubby neighbor " a resident " opened his door, the cloud of weed was so incredible, I had to cough for 30 minutes. The receptionist happened to be very helpful ( they both are) and moved me the next day to the 4th floor where those are non weed smoking residents ( they still live in grimy conditions). Room 405 was OK according to definition, big enough with a good bed,TV, fridge, and microwave. But once again this is a room without hotel facilities and mainly " residents" no hotel guests. I was looking forward to this well deserved break and it was just spoiled even though my room was correct indeed. I feel abused,Booking has got to tell guests the truth about this place. Even the Cab drivers call it a bad hotel. This is an obligation for Booking to give the right info, then people can do knowingly what they like. It is cheap but not worth the money anyway. In a normal hotel with normal facilities, the room would...
Read moreThe room is bright and airy. It was clean everything seemed well cared for. We had a good view on the 4th floor overlooking the city. Mostly we saw buildings , but we could see a hill in the distance.
The hall into our room reeked alternately of cigarette smoke and weed. The room did not. The main hall did not. They smelled fine and had plenty of ventilation.
The room hall into the room was quaint. I've never seen anything like it. The two doors at the end of the hall were set at a very acute angle to accommodate the bay windows. We were close to China town and not far from Fisherman's wharf, Union Square and the Embarcadero. I had no trouble taking a bus to China Beach and walking along the trail ovelooking the beaches.
The halls and our neighbors were quiet. Unfortunately our room was directly over the bar next door. So it got loud several times until at least 1 am. Street noise wasn't a problem, although I live over a busy street, so I may not be a good judge. The noise was only a minor irritation. All in all, I enjoyed our stay.
O yes, the shared bathroom was not a problem . I had no trouble using it in the morning . It was down the hall, and there was a latch so I felt secure. I wish we had had tissue for my nose. It did seem busier in the evening. My only complaint was not wanting to get out of bed and walk down the hall in the middle of the night. There is a sink in the room along with a fridge and microwave .
Also there is a CVS anda Trader Joe's across the street . Mymy's down the street had...
