Well I'm not usually a hotel vacation person, and I can't say that has changed based on this vacation. Check in is an absolute nightmare. There is virtually no place to park to unload at the hotel, there is a small overhang that can fit 3 cars tightly in front. We were told we could check in early from an employee on the phone (4pm scheduled), which was not the case. The line of unhappy people leading up to the check in desk (that only had 1 of 3 computers work) were told the same thing was long. the woman at the front desk was nice but they couldn't check is in until after 530 because our room wasn't cleaned yet. The staff was curtious but you can tell they were tired of getting complained to all day about the same stuff about check in... and from what I saw it was pretty much the same story everyday with Sunday and Friday checkin were the worst, but I would expect that is everyday all peak season long. after a 7+ hour drive with a toddler this was not a good start. when we finally got our stuff up the room looked great , nice sized rooms (we booked a 2 bedroom efficiency but was really just adjoining rooms with 1 kitchen) which was fine. beautiful view overlooking the boardwalk and ocean. evening seemed great until about an hour in mine and my daughter's feet were black with dirt from the not so clean floor. there were what appeared to be make up stains or something on some of the towels. the seal to the walk in shower was half off, hair in the drain before we even showered. luckily I went in first and not my wife. after my daughter was playing and lost a toy behind the couch and returned it, there pistachio shells and other crumbs back there and under the couch as well. the hotel itself was ok 4 pools, 2 outside 2 inside, one of which was 21+ with a hot tub and fire pit which looked to be the most updated. the outside pools were heated to 85 abd one was a kiddie pool depth of about 3 feet. they were small but fine. the inside pool was also ok, they had water features built in that basically sprayed water out of walls and from the ceiling which was fun for awhile but got really loud and we realized we were yelling in there just to talk to one another. we didn't go down there just to spend time in the hotel but unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate much till the end of the week, then we spent a majority of our time at the beach, which was literally right outside the hotel. The hotel staff did give us a gift card for our trouble at check in so that was a nice gesture. there were a couple good spots to eat right near the hotel, driftwood was a could blocks away and northern pizza was solid for a quick bite right across the street. waterman's restaurant was excellent but 2 miles away and worth the trip (it's a walk but you could do it down the boardwalk but not with a toddler). I am not in a rush to go back to Virginia Beach. from the start to the overall, was...
Read moreAbsolute dumpster fire of an experience with this hotel. Booked through our Capital One credit card travel program to be able to use rewards points towards the room. Because of this we called the hotel ahead of time to confirm the room type and availability before we booked. Then the day of check in, we called ahead to ensure arriving past 10pm wasn't going to be an issue.
When we arrived, the guests checking in at the desk ahead of us were already having problems with a room that had damage and was dirty. We had booked a 2 bedroom, double king oceanfront room. After we checked in and proceeded to our room, we found we had been given a 1 bedroom city view room. In addition, the room we had been given also had multiple broken fixtures and was dirty -(the floor was so dirty our shoes were sticking to it as we walked across it).
After heading down to the front desk, the front desk clerk had me forward her our confirmation email, and spent 15 minutes in the computer to tell me they didn't understand how I had been able to book the room on my reservation, as they had no ocean front rooms available at all. The best they could do was rebook us to a different city view room. The entire point of getting a 4 day booking over the holidays was to have an ocean front room. This after a 9 hour drive to get to the hotel!
Because of this we were forced to rebook a different hotel, after midnight, while still standing in the lobby of this hotel, and naturally, since we were having to rebook last minute, the rates were considerably higher. I attempted to contact Hilton customer service directly, but was basically told to kick rocks since I had booked through my credit card and not directly through Hilton.
The poor front desk girl broke down in tears while I was in the lobby, and told my wife and I she'd been yelled at all day because they had been having so many issues with reservation errors. The entire experience was an absolute nightmare. While no one was directly rude, no one seemed that's bothered that a customer was left scrambling last minute to try and get a room for the holidays. As a general manager in a retail & customer service field, if I had a customer in a similar situation I would be scrambling to try and provide a resolution. I average 25+ hotel staysba years, this debacle has soured me to ever booking a Hilton property again. I would certainly not recommend this...
Read moreWe had a wonderful time at the Oceanaire in VA Beach. The room was large and had a kitchen area, living room, small dining area, and of course the bedroom with a king bed. Things were clean, and seemed like it had been updated / modernized more recently. Our balcony area was in-between the Hilton building next door and our building, however we still had a view of the beach.
A couple of things about the room that we were dissatisfied with. The ice dispenser had not been used or ran through, so when we got ice out of it, the ice added a plastic taste to our waters and was horrible. We didn't want to try any more ice for our stay sadly so after running through some batches, I couldn't tell you if it went away.
2 of the 3 water faucets in the unit were set up improperly. With the hot and cold on the wrong sides. The kitchen faucet even has a little indicator as to which handle controls which, however they were the opposite sides. So when you want a cold glass of water, it could be hot and when you want to wash your hands with hot water, it could be cold. It took a little bit to figure out why there was no hot water. We heard some other people mention they had no hot water coming out of their faucets, and we suggested trying the other handle. Not sure if that's what their problem was.
Despite the mattress being replaced recently, it was a terrible mattress overall for sleeping. It was a Seally model, however it was just stiff and uncomfortable.
The adult pool was a great feature. No kids loudly splashing, yelling, screaming was nice to enjoy the few times we got down to there. There was an outdoor pool and guests were also able to utilize the Hilton's indoor pool next door which allowed kids.
There was a nice little gas firepit outside which we did enjoy one evening chatting up with another couple that was staying there. It does get turned off when the pool closes at 11PM as well.
As a member, we took part in one of their member events which was a dinner, wine tasting, and a drive through the boardwalk to see the lighting. The event was fun, food was good, wine was good, and the lightshow was fun, but we could have skipped that since it wasn't anything...
