Pocahontas Pancakes is located at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront at the corner of 35th St. and Atlantic Ave. It's the oceanfront, so depending on the time of year, parking can be hard to come by. There are some parking spaces available inside the garage behind the place (the parking garage overall is for a timeshare, but some are available for the restaurant. There is an entrance from that parking area too. We ended up coming here to try it out after being recommended by someone my mom knows. The visit here was on December 29, 2019.
When you first come in from the back entrance from the parking garage, you walk through a tipi. The artifacts inside there are real, so make sure that you don't touch them. There are signs in there asking not to touch them as well.
We went up to the front of the restaurant in order to get seated. The place was pretty busy already when we got here a little before 9 am. Even though it was busy, we were immediately seated. Within a minute or so, our server came to the table, greeted herself and asked if we wanted any coffee. I ended up going with a Pepsi instead, but you only get one drink refill here. After getting the drinks, we were ready to order. I went with the French Toast Combo with all bacon and scrambled eggs. My mom went with the Bacon Omelette with cheese. About 10 minutes later, our orders came out to the table.
When the food came out, it looked really good. The French Toast, bacon and eggs looked good, and so did the omelette for my mom. In general, the food was good. Similar to other places locally. The only issue was that the eggs seemed more on the lukewarm side for me, so it may have been sitting a bit before it came to the table. Since we never got a chance to get the server back over to the table in time, I just went with it. The server came back over to check on things after I'd already eaten the eggs and mostly done with the other stuff, so I ended up not saying anything this time.
Overall, this was still a good breakfast place at the oceanfront. I think that the servers may have been a bit overworked since it was pretty busy in there that morning. This was my first time here, so my experience on this visit could've been a fluke. Everything was good for the most part, except for the eggs. Prices are slightly higher than some other local breakfast places, but you get more here too. When I come back to visit the oceanfront during the off season, I would come back again to give them another try. If you happen to be at a hotel near this place, this is still a good place to visit...
Read moreWhile on vacation, it's all about the ambiance. Like, you know you're on vacation when you walk in the place because it has all the earmarks of a vacation destination. Grant it, the name grabs you, especially come breakfast time, but coming from the mountains of North Carolina, a beach isn't where I would expect an establishment called "Pocahontas" to be located. But I'm partial to the mountains I guess.
However, I knew where to go for breakfast after I googled for a breakfast restaurant.
Walking into the building, I knew I hit a grand slam when I saw the huge morning crowd enjoying their breakfast. Though there was usually a wait, my family and I must have timed it right, being seated within five minutes. Our server said there's usually a very long wait, but don't let that deter you.
My wife and daughter had snacked earlier, so they ordered a fruit platter they shared, but I was hungry. I ordered banana pancakes w/eggs over easy and bacon.
As we waited on the food, I looked around at the decor, and as the name indicates, it's a definite "Pocahontas" vibe emanating inside the eatery, with a variety of decorations dedicated to the legendary Native American.
I'm sure she may never had pancakes like I received minutes later, but I think she would have approved.
Two buttermilk pancakes at a well proportioned size w/whipped butter and banana slices circling the outer portion of the cakes. A pitcher of syrup was available on the table. My eggs were perfectly prepared. Only the yolk was runny, no egg whites were showing the eggs weren't prepared properly as I have seen elsewhere. And the bacon. Though the bacon was crispy, I'm sure I could have ordered it not so, if I thought about it. But my focus were the pancakes. And I wasn't dissatisfied in the least.
My food was amazingly delicious, the server was funny and well versed in his knowledge of the menu. If there was a drawback, it would be the milk I ordered. Oh, it was good milk. I ordered a large milk. If what I received was large, I would hate to have seen the small. But I didn't complain. I was very happy with my breakfast at the beach.
I would highly recommend "Pocahontas Pancakes and Waffles" when you head to Virginia Beach. I think you'll walk away as happy as I did. Just made myself hungry thinking about it. But a seven hour drive though......
Read moreI love the decor in Pocahontas Pancakes. It has the native american theme all over the restaurant. I was super excited to try this place out because the lines are long. I'd figure if people are waiting to eat at this place, the food has to be good. So, I'd figure you could order to go so I dont have to wait but the waitress told me they can't because the volume they have serving the dine in customers, they couldn't accommodate for pick ups so I had to wait to get a table in order to order food. I believe in the fall they will allow pick up orders so if you are planning to go until the rest of the summer, you must dine in (and your welcome...believe me it will save you some trouble 😀. Anywho...I ordered the famous Pecan pancakes combo- which was rated from the Food Network as the best pancakes which comes with eggs, bacon, and sausage for $10.45. The presentation is A1 but the pancake itself to me was bland. It's not horrible. The pancake is good but it's literally pecans on top of a pancake. Nothing special. I think if maybe they dress up the pecans like add some butter, brown sugar, some vanilla or coconut extract...that would be a game changer. And serving the Pecan pancakes with some Pecan syrup would be a cherry on top. I ordered the oreo pancake for my son and it was literally oreo crumbles on top of the pancake. Like I said,it isn't horrible. The portions are huge. You will most likely need a to go box for sure. We still ate the food but I think there was too much hype for this spot. I did enjoy the coffee though...that was good. This is why I am rating it a 3/5 stars. I was expecting better. I hope whoever reads this and orders the Pecan pancakes understands what I am saying. Overall...
