San Grand Hotel - each night priced at USD85. I would not return
16-18 Feb Cora welcomed and said if you need anything can ask front desk , so I asked her where can I get bun cha nearby and she said just walked out, you will find. So I prompted further, and she gave me the same reply. Later, when I went for a jeep tour, I asked my guide, both him and his driver recommended two specific places for me! This is what I wanted to hear - not just walked out. Then I asked her for additional water bottles, she said you may asked the front desk, to which I said I am requesting from you. She hesitated initially but helped me, and informed her manager. Her manager informed me that two bottles provided in my room and I said yes, I know and I would like more, and he said two per day. So I asked him, what star is this hotel? 4 star, he replied. Then he brought the extra waters to the room.
Room: when I first got into the room, the room smelled, informed them and they fixed it. When I returned later, same issue happened, which I suspected, it was from the air-conditioner unit moldy. Offered room change but different floor and will separate from my parents, which I decided not to and the smell has gone. When we got to the room, we waited another 10 mins for our luggage when the staff was free to deliver straight away. the surrounding of bathtub exterior flooded after every time a shower A strand of pubic hair on the bath tub Calcifications and mold on the shower head. Also, if you are less than 160cm, you will have trouble getting out of the bath tub, the design of the tub is super poor for petite people Alarm clock battery was out, informed a guy at the gentleman, no apology extended. I also informed him the pubic hair and the shower head mold, and calcifications and his reply was OK! Pillow case was torn with holes, bath mat was severely worn and the terry looks old and yellowish. Informed front desk, and they could not change anything, giving all sort of excuses, and said will change tomorrow. I stayed two nights, if I stayed for a night, nothing they could have done. Asked to see a manager and no one was available. Later when we back from tour, a guy dressed in t-shirt and jeans explained the linen could not be replaced due to whatever reason and offered 20 mins foot massage (what a cheap apology gesture!), which I did not take the offer. On the second housekeeping day, the bath towels and bath mat still worn. Probably owner no money to replace it. Feels like hostel type of towels.
F&B Afternoon tea was provided complimentary (cakes, fruits and hot drinks) During breakfast, asked for Americano, they gave me coffee with milk! Be aware if you are lactose intolerant. Then when they served the Americano, it was without the saucer 🤣 see picture Came at 6:30am, hot food was not ready, waited about 10-15 mins One tong for all cold items - salad, cheese and cold cuts - this is not right! See picture.
Would i return to stay here? No, I would not. Considering there are so many options to choose from in Hanoi Old Quarter.
We booked two nights and upon returning to the room on the second day, the room key did not work! Such an inconvenience. No apology was extended.
We have two rooms, one room checked out first, and the other not yet. The housekeeper just entered the room without even knocking!!! And the staff did not even feel remorse about it for this...
Read moreThe Hanoi Lucien Hotel and Spa or San Grand Hotel as it is now known is a delightful hotel. It is an oasis in a mad, mad city. A place in a city of over 4 million scooters where you can really relax and enjoy peace and quiet. The location of the hotel is terrific. A street or two away from the lake and right smack in the centre of the Hoan Kiem old city.
This hotel has to be one of the best places to come to peace and where one can enjoy the peace. It is also probably one of the best places and certainly one of the most pleasant places I have stayed.
From the friendly happy greeting of the ladies that made up our room, to the two young men that greeted us when we entered the hotel and carried our luggage up to the room, or who escorted us up to the dining room. We were equally delighted by the incredible assistance we were given by all the members at the reception desk. Both my wife and I particularly remember Ruby, and that young lady at the travel desk, but their colleagues were also absolutely terrific and we are very sorry that we do not know their names as they did not have name tags and their names also deserve to be mentioned here, but will have to remain anonymous.
The restaurant on the tenth floor was marvellous. The view over the city and the lake as well as the food and the service was top notch. Every whim and fancy was taken care of by the very able staff. Our waiter even remembered what we had ordered two nights previously, and when we had any questions or concerns about the wine or the food they were very ably answered by the very pleasant and smart manager, Jeff, who was a most delightful and helpful person. The menu was varied and the food we had was delicious and here again the service was like in the rest of this hotel… top rate.
I cannot use or even find enough superlatives to describe this staff as they more than compensate for any very minor shortcomings this hotel may have. The staff were pleasant, enthusiastic, pro-active helpful, informative and professional. An absolute credit to whomever set up this team.
But wait there is more. The dining room was also the breakfast room so for breakfast we also enjoyed the same view over the Hoan Kiem area, the lake and Hanoi. The breakfast was also varied and simply delicious. The buffet style dishes served were obviously selected in such a way that they would please all taste and cultures… noodles, sautéed vegetables, dairy products, bacon, eggs prepared in any way one wanted, pastries, fresh baguettes, yoghurt and on and on and on.
Last but not least we come to the terrific cocktail bar on the roof above the restaurant… floor eleven… Here the most delicious cocktails were served. It was a pity that twice that we went up there it started raining and it was a pity they did not have one of those removable sun roofs like a lot of the hotels in Italy have, but even the lack of a roof, did not stop us from going up to the bar as the rain never lasted long. I should also mention the super friendly and capable barman who prepared our drinks so beautifully, and insisted on bringing our drinks to the table.
The entire experience of staying at this hotel was a pleasure. I am just upset that we were not able to stay here when we returned to Hanoi a couple of days later, but unfortunately for us, the hotel was fully booked.
Oh I so much want to return to this hotel...
Read moreThis was my second stay at the Lucien Hanoi Lakeside Hotel. Last year it was called the Sans Grande and we loved it so much we came back the following year. I was travelling with my two adult daughters in June and we stayed for 5 days, we had two separate rooms at the end of a corridor and an added extra was that we could close a traditional wooden door at the entrance to both rooms, allowing us further privacy. ||The rooms were spotlessly clean and well equipped with hairdryer, the usual safe, suitcase stand, minibar, kettle, beverages, free bottles of water and free toiletries. My room had a shower over the bath with a solid screen and my only issue was that a handrail would have been beneficial when stepping over the bath and around the screen. There was also a glass windo between the bed and bathroom( blind also in situ) so I could watch TV from the bath a rather novel experience for me. There was plenty of how water and excellent water pressure. The bed was large and very comfortable with good quality and clean bed linen and wooden floors. My window was narrow and tall but well insulated and sound proofed. There was a great array of lights, allowing for every ambiance from soft lighting to brighter reading lights and a separate standard lamps, it did which took me a while to work out which switch controlled each one. The TV had English speaking channels and was easy to navigate. ||This hotel is situated in the old quarter, very easy to walk to many of the local attractions including the Hoan kiem lake. The street can be busy at night-time with street food vendors and does get closed when the night markets are on so coaches or taxis just drop off a 5 min walk away. Although busy at night, I slept sound, the beds are comfortable and the rooms double glazed and well insulated. The bar downstairs does play live music but not till very late and it didn't cause any issues at all. They now have a roof top bar, which we did not go to at night-time, but has an amazing views and a rooftop pool is nearly completed.||The best things about this hotel for me, were firstly the friendly, professional and very helpful staff, especially Susan in the restaurant ( makes amazingly refreshing lemon cocktails) and Jerry (we booked a Ninh Binh/Tam coc tour with him) and Dana. Plus all the other staff, who could not have been more helpful or pleasant with a lovely welcome each time we returned from our outings. ||The restaurant is on the 10th floor and has amazing views including Hoan Kiem lake. Breakfast was relaxed and we never felt rushed. The food was fresh, excellent quality and well-presented with good standards of hygiene. Perhaps not quite as an extensive buffet but then there was a written menu to choose from including pho, a variety of egg dishes and a special of the day. This meant food was served freshly prepared and less wastage. The Vietnamese coffee is amazing and we really had to restrict ourselves on the iced coffees which are delicious. A lovely extra with the Lucien is that afternoon tea is included and served between 2 and 4 pm with a range of fresh fruits, very tasty pastries and of course coffee, teas and other iced drinks were also available.||We feel we found a hidden gem in Hanoi that would be hard to beat on quality , value for money, location and the friendly helpful staff. You will not be...
