Cafe Dinh is opened by Mr Nguyen Van Dao’s sister, or the daughter of the original egg coffee creator, Mr Nguyen Van Giang. Apparently there’s a little sibling rivalry going on and in this post, we’ll share what we think about Cafe Dinh vs Cafe Giang with regard to the best egg coffee in Hanoi

Located right next to the popular touristy destination of Hoan Kiem Lake, Cafe Dinh has no lack of visitors. Even during our visit after dinner, about 75% of the cafe was filled. To get to Cafe Dinh though, is a bit of a challenge…

First, look out for the Cafe Dinh sign that is smack right between two stalls that sells Singapore-styled ice cream. Not sure why they are so popular in Hanoi but in this stretch alone, we saw 3 stalls selling the ice cream slabs served between bread or wafer, just like what we get from ice cream uncles on motorbikes in Singapore.

Once you’ve located the entrance, you will have to follow a really narrow path that will eventually lead you up to a flight of stairs…

You will have to be careful while walking up this flight of stairs. For the typical Singaporean, you may not be used to it. Hold on to the railings (or the side of the stairs since railings are not existent), just in case.

Once you’ve conquered the flight of stairs leading to Cafe Dinh, turn left to enter Cafe Dinh. If you turn right, you’ll enter into a completely modern and hip joint – that’s where you know you’re at the wrong place.

Inside, Cafe Dinh seemed more “authentic” and had been decorated with old black and white photos. Definitely more “rustic” than the original egg coffee joint at Cafe Giang. Perhaps this was the vibe that Mr Van Dao’s sister was going for. It worked...

📌THE BEST EGG COFFEE HANOI

One of Hanoi’s best-kept secrets, this place has plum views over Hoan Kiem Lake. Enter through the shop and continue through to the second floor. This caffeine-infused labyrinth is a Hanoi classic and try the Cà Phê Trứng, also called egg coffee. Vietnamese egg coffee is made by beating an egg yolk with sweetened condensed milk for about ten minutes until it makes an airy, creamy, meringue-like fluff. This eggy goodness is then slowly poured on top of hot espresso, or iced coffee.

If you’re seeking for a cooling down, try the Cà Phê Trứng Dá; ice coffee topped with beaten egg white. ☕️🥚🧊

In order to try it, taste a little sweet cream on top of the coffee cup first, then slowly enjoy the lower part of the coffee. After that, you can freely mix two layers and enjoy the exciting sense of the coffee!

Ps. Đinh Café thumbs up for the latte art! 🖌☕️

📍13 P. Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Hàng Trống, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam 💲25.000 - 30.000 Vietnamese Dong

Great place to try the well-known egg coffee.

The cafe is located on the second level so you just need to look out for the sign located above. It’s entrance was right next to a store selling “Singapore ice cream”.

Accessibility: Not wheelchair-accessible and not advisable for people with ambulatory issues. There are two short flights of a narrow and steep staircase to climb before reaching the place.

Atmosphere: The reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars. The place is dark and moderately smoky (when we were there) as people do smoke in the enclosed area. There are small wooden tables and low stools (so again advised against coming here if you have issues with ambulation, including squatting). The menu is on the wall and has Vietnamese and English versions so it’s easy to order.

Coffee: It’s good! It’s not a traditional coffee drink. It has moderate sweetness, not much of a coffee flavour, and it’s thick so it’s kind of like eating a yoghurt. I did not stir it fully so I had some leftover coffee taste...
