A global traveler’s chance encounter of a rather muted historical commemoration.
While seemingly indistinguishable from any other skyscraper on Hongkong Island, this building has significance to the modernization of Hongkong.
It’s named after SIR PAUL CHATER, a business-minded pioneer who came humble beginnings from what once called British India. From Calcutta, he worked his way through in British Hongkong. His personal success led to his co-founding of Hongkong Land Holdings (HKL).
Sir Paul, through HKL, inspired/led the reclamation of Victoria Harbor to expand public land of Britain Hongkong, upon which many commercial entities stand today.
The commemorative plaque on the entrance of this HKL-owned building is a nice gesture.
BUT for someone who had helped shape the business stature of Hongkong, doesn’t he perhaps deserve more...

So today, the valet parking guy was totally rude and told ask me if I was going to eat here. Well quite obviously this is the only stop in a dead end. Only went in to inquire about directions to a nearby place (for work purposes) and was met with shouting, eye-rolling and general bad manners from the receptionist, who was utterly annoyed that I couldn't speak Cantonese. Not sure if she just doesn't like British-Chinese people or was just having a bad day, but the way my inquiry was handled...
