I visited this church hoping to find a sense of community and connection, but it was a disappointing experience. It felt outdated from the moment I walked in, like I was transported 50 years ago. The music was hard to sit through—old-fashioned instruments, organ piano effects, and songs that are so old they seem to require you to be in a choir to sing. It didn’t feel uplifting but rather depressing.
The service itself dragged. The first 30 minutes were filled with announcements from different people, with literally zero presence. When the pastor finally started, I struggled to stay focused. Her monotone delivery and lack of presence made it hard to connect with the message. Coming from LA, where sermons are relatable and full of energy, this was night and day. Even what the pastors and choir members were wearing looked like it was from decades ago.
I respect the church and its traditions, but this experience felt like it was stuck in the past. It definitely needs a 360-degree modernization of the music and structure to create a more engaging and relatable experience for people of all ages. Imagine you’re not a Christian and walk into this church—you definitely wouldn’t come out wanting to turn to this faith.

Read moreSince moving to Tokyo earlier this year, I’ve made Tokyo Union Church my spiritual home. Initially, I was drawn in by its photos on Google Maps and its central location. But what truly convinced me to stay was the welcoming and genuinely open atmosphere.
Every service leaves me uplifted and inspired. The messages are always relevant, thoughtfully delivered, and offer fresh, practical insights that stay with me. I especially value that the church approaches the Bible with a balanced and thoughtful perspective—never extreme or dogmatic, but always inclusive and respectful of different viewpoints.
One unexpected delight has been the choir, whose level of talent and coordination genuinely astonished me; it feels almost like attending a professional concert each week.
It’s my...
